Circle hooks have been the least successful hook for me when gar fishing. J-hooks or treble hooks have been the most successful

@BitesandStrikesFishing circles do take a bit of getting used to. For garfish Idl use a larger j hook with a bait that big. It looked like that fish had a mouthful of bait and never actually got the hook. I have used trebs as trailer hooks with good success on short striking fish and when using bigger baits. I've also caught a bunch of gar on 10 in of double braided nylon rope with the back half frayed out and no hook. Stay safe and catch em up

I use Penn Spinfisher or the Fierce, the largest one you can afford so you can hold more line

@BitesandStrikesFishing ...yet! 😅 You don't have to first ruin something, before you learn to appreciate and protect it. There's no mullet shortage YET, but there will be, in 5, 10, 30 years from now, there will be, and I've seen a loooot of people like you, taking fish like there's no tomorrow...

Yet… 😂 please provide your sources for the mullet overfishing report and I’ll change my ways. As of now the Texas Parks and Wildlife has a no bag limit on mullet and I just have to go with what they say 🤷‍♂️

@BitesandStrikesFishing if you need evidence to imagine it, ask elderly fishermen of your area, I'm sure they'll have stories to tell, of "how it used to be".

They sure do. They also fish the exact same spots over and over and over for decades not understanding that, water bodies change over time, water flow, current, levels, structures and species populations. Of course non of that has anything to do with the healthy population of mullet. A species that is not on any lists of threatened species.

Absolutely, half the time I fish with cut bait it’s been frozen. You can thaw it over night, or it will thaw in the water on the hook.

@@BitesandStrikesFishing holy smokes yeah that a lot lol. I’ve only had this happen to me once, and it was half gizzard shad and half mullet

I would have loved that much shad. That’s catfish gold!

@@BitesandStrikesFishing I’m backwards lol, I find the gar here like the shad better and the cats loveeee the mullet. Caught my first massive flathead on a live mullet, as well as many 40+lb blues but they never touch the shad as much for some reason 🤔

I’ve used rotten bait, fresh bait, and even road kill. I haven’t found any more effective than the other

It would not be ideal. That length will allow a lot of bend and not give you a great hook set

7’ - 8’ is good. That allows you to cast a decent distance and still get a good hook set

Technically yes, but it’s not rated for it. You’ll be testing the limits of the rod. Of you plan on using 80lb I’d recommend a heavy at least, but really am extra heavy
