How Color 3D Printing Reshapes Patient Care, with Paul Macy and O+P Digital Designer
Prosthetic design has been leveraging 3d printing products for some time, but few have had as much experience and creativity available to them as those with access to an HP 580 color machine. Paul Macy is one of the few people who has had extensive experience and access, and shares his experience, and how it affects his patient outcomes in Orthotics and Prosthetics.
Did you know that you too can learn the workflows and file prep you need to be able to create these kinds of devices? Head on over to www.oandpdigitaldesigner.com to learn more about color 3D printing workflows.

    Hi there!! Ive seen a few 3d printed fdm sockets in a few materials (like PC by ottobock themself or petg, ABS, ASA, etc from a few others), and all of them break in normal usage. At most, ive seen them endure 2 months, so can be great as test sockets... but at the end, all failed... So you claim that yours can be definitive... can you please elaborate some more? Im not an orthopedist... i´m a tech geek, 42 years old, born without legs... so ive experienced a few materials, but so far the most reliables are the good old laminated fiberglass, carbon fibre, or nylon...

    Pretty cool workflow! At the bottom of the tool the button you clicked said "convert to BREP". If you had the other options toggled in the dialog would it make a faceted surface body? Also do you have the PDE active in Fusion? I would be curious how the organic conversion of the same mesh using the Product Design Extension stacks up with something like this.

    When MJF printing Sockets PA11 should be used it is still stiff enough when designed with the right wall thicknesses but does not break in the way PA12 does

    • @opdigitaldesigner4532
      @opdigitaldesigner4532 7 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Although PA11 is indeed a little stiffer, it would fail in the same way as PA 12, its would still rupture and shatter in a very similar fashion. WIth Pa11 not nearly as prevalent in the US compared to reseller preference of PA12, PA11 is often harder to find (you need a dedicated machine running pa11 to make it buseinss feasible), its the older material, and thus its more expensive, pushing it out of reach for affordable parts! At least in my experience.

  • @ricfair7549
    @ricfair7549 ปีที่แล้ว

    This was a good overview for a clinic in practice right now. However nTopology is in a league of their own. The benefits of 3D printed tunable lattice structures for O&P applications are endless, and they're only really possible at the design level because of the kernel nTop runs on (that they developed). It's really just a matter of time until the O&P applications it enables are seen as irrefutably far far better than what we see today. It will be interesting to see how this affects O&P designers as a whole, as like you said to fully utilize it essentially mandates an engineering background which integrates many different disciplines (biomechanics, mechanical, materials, design). When you have access to designing O&P devices that have multiple materials, multiple lattice geometries, personalization, provide multiple functions, it becomes a much harder design problem than we currently see. But clearly it will be a far better device.

  • @sierraecho884

    This lattice just looks good it has no mechanical advantage it is not "generative design" but simply a pattern. In short looks good does not really serve a purpose. Depending on the manufafturing method it even makes it more difficult to produce. I can see you are a product designer not a mechanical engineer.

  • @ascentfab
    @ascentfab 2 ปีที่แล้ว

    Hey Arthur, thank you for taking the time to show some of your workflows in ZBrush. I just wanted to point out that when you go through the re-meshing to a quad mesh and you are changing the density of the mesh, you are actually artificially smoothing the model and effectively reducing the detail over the anatomy. This could be problematic in the fit of the socket if you are changing the contours over bony or sensitive anatomy. For instance, you have lost contour definition over the fibular head, which actually physically moves during knee flexion and extension, and thus you are creating a potentially problematic result. Showcasing what can be done to clean up a 3D scan in this way is certainly effective and useful knowledge to be able to convey to a prosthetist/orthotist who may want to do their own design work. However, there needs to be a fine line between cleaning a scan and performing clinical modifications of a 3D scan.

    • @Son0fSynapse
      @Son0fSynapse 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Thanks Joe, I would agree that there is potential for the quad mesh conversion to be reduced too much, and that call would be something that the operator or clinician would have to make for themselves. This process could easily be done at double or triple the mesh resolution used to make up for this. Also having the original scan to 'reproject to' at any time to validate the shape would easily mitigate shaping concerns. I hope to teach the tools of these software's as a CAD technician, and otherwise leave full anatomical discretion to those learning to use them in clinic. Once you become comfortable with the toolsets, checks and balance procedures naturally follow.
