Homeless No More - Sacramento River District PBID
Under the guidance of the Public Space Manager, Public Space Team Members keep the River District public areas such as streets, sidewalks, bike lanes and parks free of stains, litter, graffiti, and bad odors. Team members cut the grass and weeds in public areas and work on private property where a contract is in place. They also act as a resource for persons experiencing homelessness, encouraging them to seek services and shelter. Most candidates have been referred to the River District through local shelters and social service agencies, or the Downtown Streets Team, a volunteer work program. Our Public Space Manager discusses goals and objectives with each team member in order to design a 24-month program to enable them to pursue their career dreams once they have been able to secure housing and thrive in their recovery programs. While several members of the team have been able to secure permanent housing, others remain in shelters or on the streets, but they all show up to work on time and ready to perform their job duties. While the amount of litter removed from the district continues to grow, and less enforcement is provided by the city, our team strives to continually do their best to keep the district looking great!

I started with 38, getting up at 4 am to paint while my 1-year old was hopefully still sleeping. I am part time now in my corporate job and started after 7 years to give art classes and to share my experiences and knowledge. I know the demons in my head of not being good enough and why I am not further ahead, too. But it’s not true, I live the life now I have dreamt to live for years with 45 now. There is always more and there is so so much more in the now.

Love this! It's never too late. Great story and should be great inspiration to those who see it. I was able to chase my passion again after leaving it behind because I thought it was what I needed to do so that I could survive and be successful. It was really the other way around. I needed my passion to bring what I see as being successful in life. I chased it as hard as I could and I get to do it now everyday and wouldn't change it. Keep your passion close to you and take it where you want and where you know it can go. You'll never regret it. You will only regret it if you don't. This earned a sub!

Pursue creativity for your own sake, it's great for the soul but a passion for art rarely makes a great career for most folks. Tom is obviously ridiculously talented and maybe his path leading back to becoming a Disney artist was because of the financial security he created for him and his family. I am a graphic designer and wish I would have chose a different path to build wealth faster. Art would have always been a part of my life regardless of what I was doing, but full time as a job it has kind of sucked the joy out of creating for myself. And now with a wife and new baby, my passion is providing a wonderful life for them, but design is not making me enough to do that...

Thanks for sharing this, I somehow stumbled into songwriting which turned into almost 200 songs last year 🤷‍♂️ who knew… I’ve always felt a bit unsettled by how and what pours out of me but it’s something I can’t not do so I keep doing it. There’s some ease that comes from knowing I’m not the only one to find this later in life

It's scary, and my inner voice telling me i'm a "loser" is the hardest enemy to fight. Thank you so much! You helped us a lot with this moving short video, which is a lovely piece of art in itself. Go friends! Work hard, be true to youselves and never stop. I'm not alone in this and neither are you.
