    I agree with your understanding 100%. It’s the actors interpretations of the scene during scene study. Then it’s the coaches job to offer directions AFTER the actors has interpretation. I prefer to allow the actor be the actor and show what they gathered from it. That defeats the purpose if actor is not allowed to express their interpretation in 5 pages of a 50 page script that haven’t read. Personally I enjoy listening to what the actor interprets despite me knowing the entire script. Good for you standing up…I may get jumped for this comment as a coach but I feel you are right. We want you to leave fulfilled…on set with a director is different in my opinion…we are coaching not directing.

  • @gabriellebadowski4712

    From what I've learned from my scene study teacher, everything that happens before and after a scene gives way to clues about the present. Something I've found helpful in character analysis is writing down character clues - I write down everything my character says about themselves and everything others say about my character. It's tedious and requires at least 2-3x of reading the play front to back, but it really paints a road map for you.

    • @vincehorst
      @vincehorst ปีที่แล้ว

      💯 The full context of the play can teach you about your character: their past and future, their motivations, their life experiences, etc. By reading the full play you also read ALL the scenes, which can help you decide how YOUR scene should be played (acted) in the larger context. Your teacher and mine are aligned: reading the whole place is a must!

    Very Good Video and content. Aspiring actor here. I was wondering this very question this past week, then I found your channel and this video. I have been in class for a little bit, I've gone to workshops and I've watched tons of YT videos on the ins and outs, do's and don'ts of auditioning. I hope I'm not rushing it but I was thinking of going on some auditions and see what happens. There's only so much reading, YT watching and workshops one can take before you have to just go out and do it. Thanks to your video I now have some things to check off to help me decide if I should go for a particular project or not. Thank You very much.

    Hello VInce, YOU ARE A LIFE SAFER MY FRIEND. Kerwin here, aspiring new actor. I love how you said in classroom, we're really working on working with a scene partner and being authentic in the moment. Several scenes I've performed in class, I (really thought I had the lines memorized as written when performed with scene partner in rehearsals) but when it came to the actual performance in front of instructor and classmates, a couple of times different words came out. They made sense, they felt genuine, something I would really say (and I did through the character) and all was good. I knew deep down that the words had been changed and so did my partner and when we talked about it afterwards all was good. It just bothered me though. I was starting to get worried if that were to happen on set or during an audition would someone get really angry. Now I know I can ask / talk about it with the director/ writer to get the feedback I need. I will be subscribing to gather all your other insightful knowledge for us "newbie"/ aspiring actors.

    Thanks for the advice. I watched this yesterday, my final call back on eco cast was 30 minutes ago, my role was a guy talking to his GF about some prison pictures that she made a mural of, I had just did 18 years in Prison. I kind of blanked after a line and took longer than I wanted to to deliver the second line, but I didn’t stop or ask for the line. After the first take the director turned his video on and asked me to do another take in a more sentimental way. After that take he said “we got it” and the call back was over. The whole thing took 5 minutes. I wasn’t expecting it to be that short. I wish I could have another go, but I know thats probably somewhat normal. Just wanted to share my experience with you..Any feedback would be appreciated, I wish I could feel like “I nailed it”, I’m just getting used to eco cast, usually I book with just self tapes. How you ever gotten booked after feeling like you didn’t “nail” the audition?

      Yes indeed! These are some great techniques. Another I'll add: practice practicing! I've discovered that because I've had to memorize scripts dozens of times by now, I'm much better at it than when I started. It can take several days to hear back from casting directors, so hope is not lost yet! If you don't hear back, let it go and move on to the next audition. Generally, actors will do many auditions for every 1 landed role. The ratio depends on the actor and situation but for example my ratio is approx 7 auditions for 1 landed role. Keep at it!

      @@robodobro 10% seems about right. I've not researched it myself but based on my own and actor friends' success rates, seems right. It's a matter of competition: for each role we audition for there are 5, 10, maybe even 50+ actors auditioning for the same role. Numbers game.

    Really great tips/tricks. Just this year I did some research into how Anthony Hopkins, Denzel Washington and Daniel Day Lewis learn their lines. It's working for me. First, read the script/scene 100 to 200 times without applying acting techniques. Then break the script down into episodes and begin script analysis. Then I break the episodes down into 5 - 7 line groupings and read each grouping 30 to 50 times. Then I begin the memorization process and slowly add in the acting techniques, all the while playing with a tennis ball so that I can instinctively apply "business" to a scene. I'm looking forward to getting back into class in 2021 and see how it works. Good to see you at the Christmas party.
