Navigating Mental Health Challenges in Paramedicine Education
This webinar was recorded live on November 14, 2024, by the National Association of EMS Educators (NAEMSE) in collaboration with Ryan Batenhorst, EdD, NRP.
Description: This webinar will examine the critical issue of mental health in paramedicine education. Clinical rotations are an indispensable part of paramedic training, providing invaluable hands-on experience. However, the toll they can take on students' mental well-being often goes unaddressed.
In this session, we will explore the profound impact of clinical rotations on paramedicine students, asking hard questions about whether our current practices are inadvertently causing harm. Through educator insights and real-life experiences, we will examine strategies to support students' mental health during these challenging training periods. Whether you are an educator, clinician, student, or advocate, this webinar aims to spark dialogue and action toward creating safer, more supportive learning environments in paramedicine education to contribute to the well-being of future paramedics and the future of our profession.

Watching in 2023 and it baffles me that there's not more people following or liking this video. Physical child abuse for some reason, unbeknownst to me, is not addressed in the TH-cam world. As a psychology major and also a victim of childhood physical abuse by my mom (r.i.p to her) I find it very disturbing that physical child abuse doesn't have more of a platform on TH-cam videos or feedback virtually.

Great info. I'm not a big fan of the gentleman constantly saying listen, listen to me etc. I get he is passionate about this subject. As an educator, I find it a bit aggressive and patronizing. We ARE listening or we wouldn't be watching the video.

My name is Tia’s I live in Minnesota I do not have a trach but my great grandma used to have a trach she is now passed on passed away but I know many children that have had trachs and that currently have trachs I think all hospitals and EMS paramedics EMTs should know how to handle tracheostomies in children and adults I need to put it out there like this but I think it’s a shame that they don’t know how to handle tracheostomies my question is why wouldn’t you know how to handle tracheostomies and why shouldn’t say that should be put in paramedic school maybe that really should be just to throw that out there again Tia’s from Minnesota if anybody could comment and let me know what they think of this I’m blind so thanks I remember when my great grandma had a trach when she would breathe and need to be suction I always feel scared because I didn’t know she was dying because all I heard was that you know the stuff that needed to be suction out of her gurgling back-and-forth and her trach and I just never understood why the nurses weren’t coming to suction right away and it just always kind of scared me confuse me but now as I’m older I know that OK that’s normal just means that they need to be suction I’m grateful that this program is at one hospital I hope it except I think it should expand all hospitals

Just my opinion, she makes a good point. Back when I was in paramedic school you could bet all scenario either the pt coded or it was a stupidly simple. I feel that I would have been better prepared for the street with more " middle of the road" that required clinical thinking. I understood, at that time, half of paramedic school was "paying your dues" and stressing to the limit( which the stressors has a place). Thankfully, >90% of all calls we're running there is no danger of coding but do require clinical thinking. Making sims realistic, while they can go horribly wrong and there needs some preparedness for that, there needs preparedness for what we actually do as well.

We shouldn't shit on the nurse who was just following protocol. She gets in trouble if she doesn't follow the rules. There's a million other places that guy could have weighed himself. Go to frickin walmart and weigh yourself on the hundreds of scales they have there. They also don't charge $1,000 for walking through the door. I see that as a failure on the EMTs, not that nurse.

A great presentation on an old 50s model still in use today (watched more than once). Albeit, it got me thinking more about Maslow… like the motivating need for someone to engage in the training… but I’m sure motivating factors are different when lives depend on the training, you know? Anyway, thanks for posting and thanks for your service… good luck and take care.

So what would an emphasis on criminal justice get you? And what else could you do with a minor in it? An Operational medic for different agencies would be a title you can get right? Like the FBI or the ATF or at least try to work up to that in maybe forensics like the nurses can do or on swat or hazard response
