I saw this version of "Fosse" (with this cast) on Broadway. I also saw the original Broadway version of "Dancin'" (with some replacements) and the national touring company of "Dancin'" so I've seen this Crunchy Granola number a lot. I love Bob Fosse's choreography but I wish the editing were better. It doesn't begin to convey the joy and swagger of what happened on stage in any of the versions I saw. Also, the show "Fosse" looked much better in person, but on this recording it's sometimes hard to distinguish between the black costumes and the black background.
"Who else would have a baseball team doing cartwheels and strut around like drag queens?" Perhaps Jerome Robbins who had New York gangs prancing around Manhattan in West Side Story doing choreographed ballet routines? ;-)

Kiss of the Spider Woman could hardly be described as that, and it did well. But, it didn't go seven times over budget. When you spend as much as Coppola spent on this one, you NEED a huge hit just to break even. If he'd used ILM for special effects instead of doing things like building that plane to scale, he'd have had the same results on screen much cheaper, & the film wouldn't have lost so much. Koyaanisqatsi didn't lose much because it only cost 2.5 million to make.
It's hardly the only reason, and financial misfires had occurred both before and after. The real reason that Hollywood "got less creative," if you can even call it that, is because audiences no longer wanted the same kinds of films after Jaws, after Star Wars, after Indiana Jones, The Sting, Smokey and the Bandit, Rocky. They wanted lighter entertainment, special effects, crowd pleasers, and Hollywood was more than willing to follow a formula to deliver those expectations.

They backed Star Wars, which was Lucas's offbeat personal project (I know that sounds strange, now, but no one expected that a homage to both Kurozowa & old serials would do what it did). Nope. Television was, and remains the main problem. Cinema had a choke hold on audiences for more than 40 years, making money hand over fist, becoming complacent. They didn't strategize for the future, underestimating the convenience and novelty TV brought to leisure time. Properly financed, with a long term return strategy, (as with a mortgage on a house) a slate of movies can make its money back given time. Poor management was the problem, not the films.
But, the result was he spent the next 15 years whoring himself out for things like Peggy Sue Got Married. Part of where the money went were things like building a full size plane for the airport scene. He could have just had Lucas have ILM whip up special effects that would have created the same results on screen. He wanted to do it the way the studios used to do big musicals. problem is no big studio was or ever going to be interested in a personal off beat project like that. Coppola made ultimately the movie he wanted to make, thats why you become a filmmaker. Im not saying dont play politics, you have to, but never at the cost of sacrificing your artistic dreams. Of course if I ever make it big, forget everything I said, Ill whore myself for die hard 8
In this case, risking it all meant he spent the next 15 years making movies just to pay off the debts for this one. The lesson is: If you're going to make a movie THIS expensive, get a studio to back it instead of paying for it all, yourself. Unless, of course, you're George Lucas & have made so much from merchandising that you can AFFORD to spend this much of your own money.
