Así como los carros se valen de la combustión interna para impulsar una serie de pistones que genera la energía cinética que mueve las llantas para desplazarse con mucha más facilidad y eficiencia que paso por paso, así el cuerpo de los organismos vivos "queman" o dicho más apropiadamente, oxidan piruvatos (los productos de la destrucción o, también dicho más propiamente, la catalización de moléculas de glucosa) para producir adenosín trifosfato, que es la moneda energética con la que pagamos todas nuestras actividades. Existen muchos mecanismos de regularización como este (Por ejemplo, el de compensación hidraulica en la sangre, en caso de lesión, o el de los niveles de Ph en sangre, que son super sensibles y muy estrechos para la conservación de la vida) que nos llevan a deducir que nuestro componente material (nuestros cuerpos) siguen una lógica mecánica, como el interior de una relojería. Con la biología sintética seremos capaces de crear bacterias que se alimenten de hidrocarburos y que excreten moléculas mucho más sencillas que sean digeribles para muchos otros animales, lo que se traduce como bacterias que se alimenten del petroleo que las compañías rieguen en el mar y defequen materia orgánica que no intoxique a los peces y otros animales que se crucen con ellas. También, después de muchos años de desarrollo, podríamos crear organismos mucho más complejos que las bacterias. Podríamos ordenarles a los organismos unicelulares generados en el laboratorio maneras específicas de organizarse para que formen individuos complejos: insectos, peces, tal vez incluso mamiferos, algún día, y con ello llenar de vuelta los espacios de los hábitats que el ser humano haya averiado.
