Dollar tree? Pretty much everything is trash already, I wouldn’t trust that garbage with my life. Get quality items for your survival kit. A few of these items are fine, but use your senses. If you have none, ask a professional homeless person, they know the answers to survival.

Failing to prepare is preparing to fail .

Mid-60's male here. Been "prepping" since the 80's when I started raising meat rabbits and reloading brass. Also started buying extra groceries "just in case". I've made lots of mistakes over the years, including the 5 mentioned. Skills and physical fitness should be priorities for all. I include those together because they overlap where the self defense area is involved. A number 6 would be emergency first aid. I felt weak in that area so joined our local CERT volunteer group in 2019, because it required 32 hours of training by qualified instructors. The "graduation" was a natural disaster simulation at the local FD training center. Other members were the victims. We have some members who do excellent make up, so some wounds were visible. My emergency first aid kit has grown from a 12" x 12" box, to a medium sized back pack I can grab with my rescue equipment on the run in an emergency. So, I'd recommend "preppers" to look into their local CERT program.

It's also clear so you can see what's going on inside. And yes, afterwards, one needs to still disinfect. I use Calcium Hypochlorite for this. It is available in bulk as :Pool Shock," but one has to be VERY VERY CAREFUL to get the stuff that is ONLY Calcium Hypochlorite, "And inert materials." _YOU DO NOT WANT FUNGICIDES OR ALGICIDES ON YOUR WATER!_ I shelled out extra for a batch from a Prepper Store, intended for this very use. Sadly, I did this after buying what I thought was "One thing," but, then I got "The Other." Peace of mind is worth every penny.

Concerning your physical fitness, do not go down to 2% body fat, which may look great on a body builder/model, but...when SHTF, within 48 hours of bugging out you will probably lose ten pounds of weight, so maintaining a bit of excess body fat is vitally important.

Above all of the things you listed...NEVER buy "survival food" you do not eat on a daily basis. I agree with rotation, but the best way to ensure your survival food is fresh. Only buy things you normally eat regularly, which are nutritious and have a flavor you can handle. Storing food that tastes like saw dust that you will not eat does you no good.

Tip of the day: The US Military has spent millions on foot studies to find the best footwear for its soldiers. As a former Combat Medic, when there are foot concerns, it is important to address them immediately. As little as five minutes of walking with the wrong foot wear, will cause days worth of discomfort and debilitating pain or worse. Choose a wool blend sock. The USA cushion green military sock is an excellent example of an heavily researched item. Unlike 100 percent cotton , or synthetic socks. It is a blend. It works. Reducing the friction between the foot and the boot, wicking away moisture, and keeping hotspots from happening. For tropical, desert and mild climate areas, they are great. Changing them out every few miles of walking, (as recommended for all socks) will reduce foot fatigue and related boot foot injuries. If one insists on non military wool blend, find a good wool blend civilian sock which one can experiment with. Cry once at the expense of great socks or cry a lot at the pain of being cheating yourself with cheep socks! Also, carry mole skin and apply immediately at the very first sign of a hot spot or blisters forming. IMMEDIATELY! Have a great day!

Generator: If you are trying to keep a low profile, using a liquid fueled generator could be a bad move as that can increase your profile. You would need to place the liquid fueled generator in a location where the sound cannot be heard by anyone. In an SHTF scenario, where EVERYTHING is super quiet, ANY noise that escapes and can be heard will be an absolute magnet for other people. They hear a generator humming and it's like putting up a neon sign saying 'COME HERE, I'M A PREPPER!' on the front of your house. You'll end up getting a LOT of attention that you WON'T want! They'll say that 'this person has a generator, what ELSE do they have that we don't? We're hungry, maybe they have food they can share with us!' Now, as far as solar panels, they may, or may not get attention, it really depends on how common they are where you are located. A small windmill, if you are in a urban or suburban area, might definitely attract attention, especially if it suddenly pops up AFTER the SHTF happens! Best to put it up before and make it look like it's just there for decoration, rather than actually doing something. Your solar panels should be just enough to keep a power bank for a radio charged. But, be careful that people can't hear the radio. Just like a lot of light from inside is like a beacon when everything else is darkness, the sound that you make becomes MUCH louder when you have a background of silence.
