Sad enough for a final film? - The Boy and The Heron (2023) Review
I’m a fan or Stephen King’s works. I read Needful Things before I saw the movie. Books usually reveal more then a movie. I thought he was a Demon or similar being. He collected souls.
I love the book and feel the movie is underrated. Max Von Sydow always gives a brilliant performance. That being said, I understand where it is lacking. I feel it could be really, really well done as an 8-10 episode miniseries. Following each character's arch for a full episode seems like it could really lend itself to that format. I've been saying this for years and really don't get why it hasn't been attempted yet.
The book was great.... darker and gave in depth to the consequences of each trinket deemed needful. Watching from Asia 🌺 subbed!
Thanks so much for subscribing. I'll add the book to my reading list for sure 🙂
Who, or what, do you think Leland Gaunt really is?
Hey there cals cinema sling blade is one of my favorite movies with Dwight Yoakam in it and Billy Bob Thornton I have seen sling blade I don't know how many times I recently watched sling blade again but only movie clips I don't have sling blade on DVD but we used to own it on vcr and that's how I first discovered sling blade and I have a pure passion for collecting action figures especially iconic movie characters but it really bums me out that they don't make any sling blade figures and I really don't understand why they don't make any figures based on the iconic movie sling blade like how about some sling blade funko pops of Karl eating some French fries and a Doyle figure as well I actually have some Forrest Gump funko pops so if they made Forrest Gump figures I know they can make some sling blade figures so I really don't know why they don't I mean Karl Childers is one of the most popular movie quoted characters and Doyle
Hey Dylan! A funko pop of Karl eating french fried taters, or, maybe with a lawnmower and a gas can would be great! 😁
I first saw this film at 3pm (ish), in a hotel in Goa, in 2009. Hearing the accents, and being so far away, in the palms on the beach... I just thought "What the --father jack--!" The movie really grabbed me, so far away from home. As soon as I got home, I bought the DVD to see it again, and it's been with me since. I run a secret movie night, weekly at the specialist beer shop that I work for, and just two nights ago I showed this film. It is a lovely, touching, moving, hilarious, and heart-warming movie. I served cups of tea with HP sauce to everyone there. Not everybody tried it, and those of us who did, thought a little is really good, but too much is too much... But you'll never know unless you give life a try, and action takes place of the intermission...
I loved this movie. Norm also starred in screwed with Dave Chappelle as well. Glad you did a review of it.

My favorite Van Damme film is The Quest
For those who weren't born then, it's hard to express how overexposed Steve Martin had become. He was everywhere in every medium, and people from all walks of life were quoting him constantly. As yet he hadn't shown any range beyond this guy with rabbit ears, and I was bloody sick of him. I finally watched this movie on laserdisc at the college library about a year later, and loved Bernadette Peters. The rest I found pretty blah. FWIW I wasn't exactly woke at that age, but the racial humor bothered me too. But that was a trend of the times. Because of Blazing Saddles, All In The Family, George Carlin, and Saturday Night Live, comedians were testing all kinds of boundaries through satire, and white comics often gave themselves permission to use racial stereotypes against themselves to expose the absurdity of racism. I can see this movie in that context now, but as you said, it's not my call for how others might feel about it. I still cringe through it (and the jokes about homelessness), but I've come to really enjoy some other parts of this movie. FWIW, Carl Reiner was a pioneer in including Black actors on The Dick Van Dyke Show. The longest laugh they ever got from the studio audience was because of turning racial expectations on their head, exposing the innate racism that white people hold in themselves. It was Brilliant. He intentionally made a point of hiring Black actors in order to expose audiences to more racial diversity. But he wasn't always as thoughtful as he intended to be. There's an episode where Rob and Laura accidentally dye their hands black before having to attend an awards dinner from a Black organization. It has the same sense of cringe as the humor in The Jerk, but I think that this was Reiner's clumsy way of opening up the conversation about race and I give him credit for that, although I can't fully defend the method. Very enjoyable. Thanks.
My one and only complaint about Shot Caller is that we never get to see Jacob become institutionalised. We never really get to the point where he’s comfortable inside and content to stay there forever. So his decision to go back in the end seems confusing and depressing more than a natural conclusion to his journey.
I've seen it over 100 times... know every joke by heart
"OK, USA!!"
To think of someone not growing up with this movie. Just like Karate Kid, you dont need to really care about the actual martial arts to love it.
I had to edit in the correct pronunciation of 'Dux' in some parts, if it sounds a little weird 😂
Labeling anything in this film as "racist" is sad.. Pointing out and making fun of racist ideas in a film isn't racist. I wish I could figure out when Americans became so fragile. The film isn't the least bit racist. Fragile, weak minded people are why our world sucks today. Grow a pair.
That one instant completely changed his whole life. I know what that’s like at 21 I was in school. Did really good on a test went to a party and some guy got hurt after that I ended up in prison for 10 years.
Damn. Sorry you had to go through that experience.

i was in prison in Florida for a few years, and ever since then ive had this "thing" about knives being used in movies or even video games, but the scenes in this movie that used knives were pretty good. and i mean, how far would u go to protect your family. . .
I remember everyone trying the brown sauce in their tea after this came out. We were all trolled.
Really not delish.

Wow😂 Delete your comment, save a little face, take the L, and move on. The title is clear. The video is clear.
@ I will not.
Probably my favourite non-Leslie-Nielsen comedy film of all time! On the racism bit, it's all about context. It's the baddies who are using the slurs - Navin then says it, but ironically and out of anger at _their_ racism. As for the family, they are portrayed as almost the only decent, sensible people in the film, and the Dad turns out to be the financial genius in the end. "You mean I'm gonna stay this colour?" - skin colour was a thing in the 70s/80s USA - this is just Navin's dim-witted, naive misinterpretation of what's going on. It doesn't lessen the black characters in any way.
I never had an opinion about Steve Martin until I saw him in The Jerk. I thought he was very clever and the film could be watched and enjoyed, repeatedly.
If you do watch the film, stick around for the credits to hear Colin Farrell's excellent cover of 'I Fought The Law'!
He's an antihero
Comedy is only "inappropriate" to woke mind virus ears. The worst movie commentary I've ever heard.
This movie is not racist. It's a comedy. Steve Martin's character was lovingly raised by a black family and he feels a strong connection to them to the point he identifies as black and has never given a thought to any disparity between skin colors. It's a comedy and if you don't burst out laughing at one of Steve's opening lines: "I was born a poor black child," then you've got no sense of humor. This movie draws blacks and whites together. Life is about love. And he shared with that family unconditional love.
Thanks for profiling such a great film. Just one point of contention, which is the analysis of the 'n' word, and that, to paraphrase the review, the slur is thankfully no longer acceptable today. I'll just refer you to South Park's With Apologies to Jesse Jackson episode. It's worth a review in and of itself. The founders of the NAACP praised the episode for the thoughtful manner in which it tackled the issue of racism, and I think comedy and its often provocative nature is best positioned to address such sticky issues. Best of luck and look forward to further content.
@@bpmca69 That's a fair point about that episode. I love old South Park and can never watch anything from Wheel of Fortune without thinking about that opening scene and remembering laughing hard at it back when it aired. I guess it's all in the context!
I love this movie, I watched it in theaters.
The film's racial humor is making fun of a dimwitted white guy. His black family loves him. They adopted him. And in the end, it's them who save the day. I'll agree hearing the n-word is jarring and uncomfortable today. Having seen this in the theater when it was released, I can tell you it was jarring and uncomfortable then, too. But Navin's reaction to it in the scene is what makes it kind of ok, I guess.
The problem today is that such humor has "been left in the past", which you pretend is a win for the world today. No, it's the wimpy insensitivity of modern day that has ruined humor.
I think white actors not using that word for laughs today is a win for the world, yes. You don't?
@@CalsCinema No, I don't. That's racism, saying that someone, because of their color, shouldn't use a word. That's an example of the hypocrisy of the racist left today. Words aren't off limit to anyone, freedom of speech, let alone to someone due to their "color". It's a pathetic and weak mindset. But, good video otherwise :)
Oh. "Sir you're talking to a ninja" He just stood up to racism and delivered consequences. Great movie. So is the toy. I saw it listed as can't do it today and why. It actually gave good message and example. Thier why not was nonsense.
Sorry if any of your comments got removed! I bumped a troll off the channel, and some replies to his might have gone with him 😅
@@CalsCinema hey hey, that was definitely some entertainment.

Very impressed with the amount of research done for the video!
I loved the movie. I saw it when it first came out in the theaters. I don't have a problem with racial humor as long as it is done in the proper context and for humor's sake and not trying push a negative racial agenda.
Loving the nuanced view of the film! Im happy to see someone talking about how something couldnt be made today in a positive light! It's always just people complaining that they either can't acceptably be extremely hurtful to groups of people for no reason or making it up. Plenty of recent media includes racial slurs, like Curb Your Enthusiasm or Shameless, and plenty of the other things that people claim to not be allowed today. I think now these things are just used in media more poignantly. Now when slurs or sexism or whatever is in media, it's presented and then condemned or simply not used in a neutral nor positive light. Media isn’t unallowed to use certain words or convey ideas, but the creators of media are more informed about what types of messages are harmful to groups of people and general society, and so are consumers, who are able to vote with their wallets.
Thanks for your comment! You raise some interesting points there. I always try to be objectively fair in whatever I review. I didn't feel I could avoid covering the topic, as much as I love the film...
@CalsCinema I assumed for much of it that you disliked the film based on the title. For some reason I took it as you claiming it's beyond moronic, as in especially moronic, rather than having more to offer than just being moronic.
What's your favourite Steve Martin film?
My favourite is an all but forgotten movie called "The Lonely Guy". Charles Grodin plays his best friend and their one on one scenes were my favourite part of the movie. The critics didn't like it much and thought it was cringey, but for me the natural mundane conversations he and Charles have reminded me of the late 90's early 00's cringe comedy of Garry Shandling, Larry David, Ricky Gervais and Sacha Baron Cohen
Dead Men Don't Wear Plaid.
I love him in this film The Jerk but I really did like him in Parenthood.
Such a good movie. I'm amazed at how anachronistic it already feels, being just 10 years old. The media landscape has changes so much. I feel like a contemporary movie about the state-of-the-art in modern media depravity would have to focus more on the influencer world or bot farms posting rage-bait on Twitter.
Its not specific to capitalism, its specific to entertainment within journalism
The profit incentive is *why* we have entertainment in journalism, sensationalism, 24/7 news, etc.

Dirty Work is a 5-star 2-star movie.
Do you find yourself rooting for Lou as the protagonist despite his actions?
Jacob simply became a product of natural selection. He was thrown in a pit with violent animals. Not only did he manage to survive, but he also managed to be a king among them. As tragic as what happened to him, his overall determination, resiliency and desire to survive toughened him up for better or worse
Norm ruled
