Climbing Henderson Ridge (on a rainy day)
มุมมอง 158ปีที่แล้ว
What was meant to be a relatively easy climb up and down the 5.4 Henderson Ridge turned into a much more difficult experience due to some less than ideal weather! The rain meant slick rock, and the mountaineering boots I was wearing didn't help. The result was a fun and interesting challenge of trying to climb with super low friction underfoot. We managed our way up, but the down-climb will hav...
Mixed Climbing in Shoestring Gully

Join me on a mixed ice/snow/rock climb of Shoestring Gully in Crawford Notch! This gully offers about ~600 feet of climbing following a ~1000 foot approach. It was a warm day, making for a wet climb. We opted for the 5.5 rock finish (which ended up being quite icy). Climbed on 12/30/2022. Special thanks to Austen Bernier of Northeast Mountaineering for guiding!

    Interesting - at 10:16 it looks like the guide used a clove hitch on the gear he placed. Does that mean he was effectively rope soloing? i.e. paying out rope on his end while leading. Or was that a pseudo anchor?

    Yep I'm binging you today. Headed out to to Mt Baker and Shuksan in less that a month. Shuksan's summit pyramid will be the first time on steep rock with mountaineering boots. Hopefully it'll be dry and not the mess you're dealing with here. Probably take the boots to North Conway this weekend and see what it's like. I tried to hook up with NEM in Washington this year but it just didn't work out. I climb with John Willard of Willard Mtn Guides in NC NH. PEACE

    I’m doing this route with AA next month. May I ask what time you left camp on summit day and what time you summited? They say prepare for 1000’ of elevation gain per hour but surely you didn’t summit in 3 hours did you? I’m hoping they over-sell the training so the trip goes smoothly.

    • @nickhassan
      @nickhassan 8 หลายเดือนก่อน

      I just checked the timestamps on the raw footage, we woke up around 12:30AM, were on the trail by 2AM, and hit the summit crater at 7AM. There were plenty of short breaks on the way up as I recall. The elevation gain recommendation I think is more of a fitness gauge than anything else.

    Is that a ring you are wearing? If so, consider not wearing that climbing, or playing basketball. My wife who is very agile, and a good climber, was working at this store, and she climbed up on a shelf, and slipped, her ring caught the edge of the shelf, and when her weight came on it, it stripped everything off her finger but the bone. This is called a "ring avulsion", and in serious cases "degloving". They sorta fixed it, she was near a hospital. It doesn't work particularly well, and is oversized. She has to wear her wedding ring on her opposite side. That little fall, could have lost you a finger.

    • @nickhassan
      @nickhassan ปีที่แล้ว

      Yikes, sorry to hear that happened to your wife. The ring I wear when climbing is made of silicone, so it would rip off long before any injuries could occur.

    Wow, what is supposed to be an easy climb looked way harder with those conditions. Any cam or nut placements ? looks like it would be hard to protect with screws in most places due to the thin ice. So much water also... jeeze.

    • @nickhassan
      @nickhassan 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yeah I only recall one anchor where Austen used a cam and two nuts, the rest he was able to build with just ice screws. It was thin and wet for sure, the usual route for the 5.5 finish was a literal waterfall which forced us to use the thin ice off to the left instead. Made it interesting!
