Guild 12 string guitar shootout JF30-12 vs F-1512

Guild 12 string guitar shootout JF30-12 vs F-1512. Demo and compare at 2:47 Review at 5:43 Listen to how they sound with a full band "in the mix". RecordingFreaks.com F-1512 versus JF30-12 BrianCottrill.com
I added stacked pots to my Dano. With switch in the middle you get can some superb tones balancing the volumes. ps my Dano sounds nothing like the thin sound on this vid.
The Danelectro pickups sound very thin with and without eq. I like Danelectro and have a Danelectro Danoblaster Innuendo 12-String that the pickups sound much fuller. I think the Gretsch and Rickenbacker both sound great and full in their sounds but for cost I got a great deal on my Danelectro but would not buy the one you are demoing. Great comparison video!
Just take that heavier string and make sure it's on top. With the octave thinner string underneath. On ANY Twelver. The Rickenbacker is th only Guitar with the proper octave string set up.❤ Believe me I a have made this mod on many types of twelve strings guitars They INSTANTLY become easier players. If you can play Twelver like a six stringer You will be blown away by the sounds you can achieve in any rhythm. Or lead track live or in a studio. Especially double tracked in Stereo. In a wide spacing Left Center Right.
Forget the Danelectro - the contest is really between the Gretsch and the Rickenbacker, and value for money, the Gretsch wins hands down. I had a Rick. 360-12 once but gave up on the narrow neck. It's the same as a 360-6 - ridiculous!
Gretsch G5422G-12 is my fav and had a chance to play it......butter on toast!!🤩
Surprised you didn't include the REVEREND AIRWAVE as its price point is between the Gretch and the Rick.
Lots more tone out of the JF30 and less of the sound of spanky strings being struck as in the F-1512. Yes I have a 2008 GAD JF30 12-string and it sounds even better than the one played here.
I love how you got your old rock buddies reunited to go record some songs❤Keep Rocking N Rolling my friend!!
I was surprised how bad the Danelectro sounded. I have a Jackson Surfcaster with lipstick pickups, the best sounding electric 12 I have come across. The Rick style headstock works for me, but the narow neck is not playable for me, I really should sell it. I have tried lots of Rick 12s, all too narrow, I should try to get my hands on a 660/12 as it has the widest Rick 12 neck (I have a 650S and like the ergonomics of the 600 guitars). What I do play is a Burns Double Six, the body is like an enlarged Strat, three Trisonic pickups (as used on the Brian May Red Special) and a long six a side headstock. I have to put the seats down in the car to fit the case in. The Double Six does not have the shimmer that I associate with 12 string guitars, but with careful EQ and a little compression does a good enough job, add to that I play it so much better than the Surfcaster. I felt that the Gretsch and Rickenbaker were both close to what I look for in an electric 12 string, though the Gretsch pickups sometimes seemed a bit too in your face, maybe that is why the Rick has less powerful pickups.
Ditto. I have a ‘59 reissue 6 string and it absolutely sings. This video may have convinced me to not go get the 12 string model!
I expected the F-1512 to sound darker and fuller due to the rosewood, but actually the JF-30 won in this regard.
thanks for this great video.
I have a dean boca 12. It is similar in price to the Dano but not as shrill. Nice wide neck.
the danelectro did sound like pure barf.
Closed my eyes during the playing part and knew immediately which guitar was what. The Ricky blows everything else away. Unmistakable sound!!
Thanks for the demo, I will be sticking with my Gretch 12 string, we are getting married soon (me and Greta Gretch), I might invite you to the wedding...lol ❤😂🎉😮😅❤
I also bought the Gretch, and very pleased indeed I am with it, it comes very close to the Rikenbacker sound, and that is good enough for me, also the guy didn't try them without being amped up,, and I have to tell you that the Grerch is fantastic, on its own, without being amped up, enjoy, if you do decide on the Grerch...peace out ❤❤😂🎉😮
What about GUILD, DEAN, FENDER and VOX?
the Danelectro is terrible
Rickenbacker sounds better to me.
Had a similar experience when trying 12 strings-- the danelectro is a great feeling instrument but is very glassy sounding. In hindsight, that might be tamed by using flatwounds
The Dano sounds paper-thin while the other two sound pretty darn close to each other, with the Rick sounding slightly better than the Gretsch, but they both have depth and warmth. I've had a Gretsch 12'er for a few years and really like it. It cost $700 used in like-new condition (Still had the factory strings on it). I'm mostly a Tele guy, but I love that Byrds and West Coast Pop Art Experimental Band '60s psych stuff with 12-string jangle. The Gretsch sounds good for overdubs if it needs that spacey fairy-dust sound. I've found that the 12-String sounds really good through a Twin Reverb, which gives it the clarity it needs to really shine. With a smaller lower wattage amp (10-40 watts) it almost distorts too much and you hear more amp than guitar. I'd probably like a Rick, but for the small percentage of time I play 12-string guitar I'll stick with the Gretsch. I also love the feel of a hollow-body archtop. It's kind of neck-heavy, so I used an adapter from Martin to put the strap around the headstock Johnny Cash style and problem solved. I'd also be interested in hearing the Fender XII, and more recently they came out with a Squire Jazzmaster 12. The Beach Boys and The Smiths also used a lot of 12-string guitars on their recordings but maybe not so much on stage. But remember Rickenbacker gave the first two 12-string electrics ever made to The Beatles, who started it all.
The Dani sounds like it’s not right. You should have it checked.
The Harley Benton is an excellent 12 string for the price.
Great editing job for this video
good demo thanks
This is a very useful comparison. Thanks alot.
Have fun time with your setup, cheers.
im sorry none of these even rate because they don,t go in tune to begin with you need a compensated nut which there is only on guy in the world you can get one from the owner of the patented EarVanna nut system without it you will always have tuning issues i have owned a ricky serial number 800 but it could not compare to my Dan electro with an earvanna nut system on it that actually goes in tune what a difference this makes in sound quality
I have the Gretsch. It is a Korean model built in 2018. Very nice.
I think in a live act the guitar that seems to get through it all especially when it's a big venue seems to be the Gibson that Frank Hannon from Tesla plays I think it is called the songbird or something like that and his signature model will only set you back about $5,800 bucks. But it does chime through. I've also had good luck with almost any box as long as I put the right pick up in the sound hole which for me has been the active version of the LR bags acoustics they just can be dialed into almost any guitar. Well definitely the box matters and better guitars will always have better tone especially acoustics. I have found some cheap guitars that sound really good with a good pickup installed and as long as you change the strings out regularly and use very expensive good strings like elixirs they tend to sound good regardless of how expensive the box was. I say box because I'm a woodworker and the guitar is really a box with a hole in it even though it's got a shape :-) very good coverage like your show I think I will be back!
The Dano has sharp attack, but, like all of its brothers and sisters, it really only has one tone and lacks sustain ... which is why producers used to use them to give sharp needle point attack to a track. Famously, the Dano Longhorn was played in unison along with a Fender Precision or standup bass using gates to separate the strains down the track. The Dano gave the attack and the P-Bass or String Bass (or both) gave richness and sustain to the sound. Given his penchant for huge fat mixes, this technique may have been invented by Phil Spector, but could just as easily been invented by Chet Atkins trying to establish sonic control over a slap bass sound. The Dano 12 plus Gretsch 12 played together in unison might actually get close to the sound of the Rick with giant treble boost. In the end, though, you get what you pay for... Which is why you should really search for a vintage Fender 12 ... for that Stairway to [getting blocked] Heavenly sound. Great to hear the guitars mixed into a full band recording. You can really judge how each one transforms the texture of the overall sound.
I would of loved to hear the fingerpicking in a mix
I want to get a rickenbaker … 360 12 strings
Nice comparisons here with and without backing tracks. The Danelectro almost sounded like an unplugged electric. Very tinny, not much character. The Gretsch was cool, bit seemed too muddy. The Ric is definitely the ticket here. All you needed was that slight high-end boost and the magic was there. Thanks for posting this.
A Tom Anderson Crowdster works great for me!
The Dano 12-string sounds much better than the demo in this video. I’ve owned both.
According to sound: 1. Ric 2. Gretsch 3. Dano
Ric all day!!!! Great review fantastic....
If you can afford, the Ric easily! One under communicated bonus with Ric 12s is that due to the 6+6 tuner layout, you can use it as a 6 without looking too weird. I actually use mine as a 6 for the moment. Great vid by the way, thanks!
Thanks great video ❤
Both sound good!
man, there’s something wrong with your dano! maybe miswired? i have one and it is actually quite close to the rick, but yours is missing all the lower freqs. but dont take my word for it ; see other TH-cam comparisions. (also, you can have a nut made for any 12 with whichever per-course string order you prefer. i hated the aluminum nut on the Dano, so had a new one made and chose the Rick order, low first.)
Same strings? Because that maple shouldn’t sound warmer!
You know that old adage, "You get what you pay for?" This is a great example. I hate to say it, but that Dano was terrible - far too shrill. The Rick edges out the Gretsch, but it's close!
In this order, Rickenbacker wins! 2nd place is the Gretsch and the Dan Electro. On the Electro, the pickups were too low output! A liitle disappointed since I was going to buy it. I'll save up my pennies and get the Rickenbacker 360-12. I guess it's that old adage, you get what you pay for! Thank you for posting this. Good insight and detail.
I just want to hear each guitar with any other noises lol….
'PromoSM'
I go for the Ovation 12-string
Saying that With or Without You has minimal visuals with just a round object in water is probably the greatest disservice to what was really happening. That was the song in which the orb rotates and splashes an amazing wallpaper onto the inside surface of the venue.
I was talking about the beginning of the song. I agree it develops into something very cool later in the song.
Terry Lawless played keyboards.
