Love the two-tone concept! I often have a hard time distinguishing a Dit and Dah as a single character. Most likely do to some mild hearing damage in my left ear but not really sure. But it makes sense to me. Sounds like a problem for Bob W06W to solve. Bob can solve all the problems. Your welcome Bob ; )

Just got my tech/general after Helene in Western NC, the reason I’m learning CW is mainly because it cuts through on low power and it’s interesting for POTA… It’s also a way to contact for those of us that don’t really like SSB conversations. So it’s useful for emergencies with QRP radios and it’s a little less directly personal as SSB is…

Howard, I don't know how I stumbled on this but it's interesting. I saw what you were trying to do with sending your call sign to the music. I had a hard time copying it because of the distraction of the music and the varied spacing to stay on beat. If the distraction of the music equates to QSB or QRM, I think I'd find that hard to copy for a whole QSO. Kind of like how hard it is to copy someone new to a bug. I could see that two tone method being useful. It was tough because it was different, but I think once you get used to it, it might be a neat tool. And the bass line was cool too. I really like when I hear CW in music, accidental or not. Dave Casler's youtube theme song has 5nn in it and I think it's just a coincidence. I don't think you were being down on the POTA crowd, but it came across just a little bit that way. As a guy who came into CW via POTA, the question is how do you pull people further in? There's a whole new wave of people learning CW for POTA, how do you get them to move past just call sign, 599, and state? SKCC? Other? To be fair, it's not much different in SSB.

The first station heard was ZDK Gibraltar Radio being British they spoke excellent English, the next station we encountered as we sailed into the Mediterranean was 9HD which was formerly British and they speak excellent English. Both excellent Morse stations.

I still count but narrowing the spacing from 12/7 and pushing myself during practice to 12/8-9. Frankly I am pleased for the audio technology upgrades since the 70's, That was a royal mess to my ears ;). I like the sound of the two tone CW. Playing music while listening to CW does not work for me, too distracting, it's like playing music during during a YT video or documentary while trying to hear what the speaker it trying to say about the subject, hard to do. Doing Morse with the chopsticks was neet. #266

I ran into problems on my first attempt to join a class this week because my rig was too far from my iMac for the sidetone to be heard. You suggest a loudspeaker extension in this circumstance but I would like to suggest an alternative solution. I used a cheap lapel mic plugged into USB and located near the rig speaker. Using Midi setup on the Mac I created an Aggregate microphone device which allowed the use of sound from the rig sidetone as well as using the Mac microphone for voice audio. The input levels can be independently adjusted. Works well. Peter G3WHO

Great video! I've never seen one on flutter before. I've only heard flutter on the air twice, but when I hear it I know it's going to be a memorable contact. First was a Russian station during a contest, second was Alaska when I was doing a POTA activation. I worked both of them. The extra effort copying it is definitely worth it. 73, Tom VA2NW LICW#4896

I am 61 and when in my teens I remember an old radio ham who helped me build my first superhet having a full on row with his wife while sending and receiving morse. This amazed me how he could focus on both. His speed when having a qso was mind blowing and totally off putting and rather intimidating. Now Ive finally plucked up the courage to learn I'm looking forward to my rather late journey into cw

Much of the online training stuff, including CW training materials, train that QSL means confirm. The popular Kurt Z Morse Ninja cw practice videos translate QSL as confirm, same as CFM. Now I send R (Roger) because it's much easier to key.... But there are hams that learned phone first and saying QSL, asking if the other party can confirm what was sent, v is the most common usage and though much if the nomenclature of phone is drawn from CW, for newer hams I think, who learn CW secondarily, phone habits bleed into CW. Personally, QSLs meaning is context-driven... Please send QSL is asking for something... QSL by a certain instruction set is instructions.... The ending information with QSL? Is asking for confirmation... I really don't see the problem in using it that way beyond it's harder to send unless efficient but it's meaning is contextually obvious, at least on phone. CW abbreviations and shorthand is very much like the way teenagers text today, which sometimes I have to have my 15-year-old daughter translate those for me! So wraps this doesn't all apply to CW quite as clearly... But I've yet to encounter anyone during a CW QSO use QSL for anything other than a QSO confirmation instruction.

This was brilliant and inspiring, thank you! And it's truly wonderful what you've done here. I'm definitely going to join up. I dabbled (very loosely) with learning code when I was a kid, as I'd loved hearing it on my old SW receiver. There was something about it that I found to be as exotic and romantic as hearing all those faraway SW broadcasters using AM. I swore that someday I'd finally get my ham license and really learn CW. Well, I've had my license for over a decade now; I think it's time to get 'serious' about CW. Truth be told, I was a bit afraid of it. What you've demonstrated so well here is that you've set up a context designed to make the learning experience as stress-free as possible. So now I have no more excuses. I'm ready. Cheers and 73!

Howard, nice video, but I have to strongly disagree with part of what you said about the Heathkit SB-220. It can easily be used with the latest radios and beyond. I’m using mine with a Yaesu FT-DX101MP and they actually pair together quite well.

Apoint about errors, misspelling is not the same as jumbled letters. I can easily read jumbled text as you showed. but would you be able to head copy it in cw? A single letter missed or in wrong place might be ok unless it destroys the word sound. As english is my second language I need to assemble the word phonetically not spelled.
