    Good tactical content, keep it up! Would have liked to hear why pivots forming a line with the defender on the ball's good. Doesn't that close off passing angles to the one further forward?

    • @BusyWatchingWomensSoccer
      @BusyWatchingWomensSoccer วันที่ผ่านมา

      It's a good question, my guess is by creating more diagonal passing lanes than square passing lanes, you're starting to set up for the next passes in a sequence. There's three diagonals backwards so you have a short, medium, and long option. Tons of diagonals forward to support an attack, but by pivoting in the midfield you've also left space for your forwards to leave their position and have a bit of freedom in. And then you have the flexibility to use those structures together, I sort of think of it like pinball, the ball goes up to the defensive mid, bounces back to the centerback, and it plays out from there. Just my take.

    great, super helpful video as always. sorry if this is a dumb question, im still trying to learn, but would these formations be created based on player skills or do we just assume this level player can play however Emma wants them to with the system she likes? or i guess im asking how does a coach decide what formation they are using?

    • @BusyWatchingWomensSoccer
      @BusyWatchingWomensSoccer 2 วันที่ผ่านมา

      There's no dumb questions in life! It totally differs by coach but with Hayes I think conceptually she's executing what she's done recently at Chelsea. An offensive shape that's focused on building from the back (3 defenders instead of 4 creates space to move into and pass out of, lots of width around the midfield to start stretching the opposition), and a compact defensive shape. My guess is she then looks at the specific players skills to decide how she wants the team to function. Think about the back three in possession, it's Davidson/Girma/Fox and Dunn's higher up. That could just as easily have been Dunn/Davidson/Girma with Fox higher up. What was Hayes looking for when deciding between Dunn or Fox for that role?

    Pardon me for changing the subject, but I think it's related to the USWNT. When Alyssa Thompson joined AC she was a kid with no mentor. Now Christen Press and Sydney Leroux are on the roster and Alyssa was inches away from a hat trick in the Aug. 24th San Diego v. Angel City game. After the game there was a great shot of Leroux, Thompson and Press walking with their backs to the camera, arms around the shoulders of Alyssa. 😊>>> San Diego is just "snake bit".

    Fantastic post. Very British presentation btw! 😉 Agree on the box midfield and the 9, though I don’t think Rose and our captain were great together. Also, CD’s long pass to Rodman’s space against Japan was a special play by both stars and a reminder that as a coach deep down Emma believes her playmakers are better than your playmakers with every fiber of her being. Time and again, US players rose to be just a bit better in the clutch or in the hell of extra time than their opponents which is a testament to Emma’s belief in them.

    • @BusyWatchingWomensSoccer
      @BusyWatchingWomensSoccer 4 วันที่ผ่านมา

      Thank you, I suppose my british-ness is leaking! Rose never really seemed to get to do her thing, I did think she looked nice defensively though. What's your take on how Albert came on? It seems to me that Hayes brought her on when she wanted to push Horan up the field a bit. I'd also be interested in your view on how Swanson would sometimes come really low (Williams goal) or Smith would come wide (Swanson goal vs Zambia). Were these just examples of freedom or were they tweaks in formation?

    • @BusyWatchingWomensSoccer
      @BusyWatchingWomensSoccer 4 วันที่ผ่านมา

      Against Japan I think a single pivot was used where Horan got to move higher to pair with Lavelle and Swanson at the top forms a diamond. Albert played well after settling, and she seems very capable in most of Hayes' midfield positions. Those clips were really fun to look at! Zambia is a perfect example of freedom. At 23:14, I think Hayes yells "high" and Swanson corrects by pressing higher. She ends up higher than Smith so when they repossess off the long ball, they trade positions with Smith becoming the midfielder. Probably Swanson's call and what a good one! Williams' goal is more of business as usual to me. Swanson's positioning seems a little wide right, a little low, but that's just her sniffing out the right space to be in.

    excellent. I like the mat because you can describe the intent clearly with all 11 players. When referring to video or screenshots, too often not all the players are in frame or not set up quite in a way that makes your point. Love that suggestion. It's no coincidence to me that the three roles with a bigger recovery are three of the faster players, I can see that being a really effective change to address a lack of speed at LB if Dunn needs to come out of the rotation.

    Loved this. I've been looking for tactical analysis of these matches. I'd love to see how you break down the match against Brazil. I'm really interested in what adjustments Hayes made to get us on the front foot. What did she change in the second half. It seemed to me that in the 2nd we decided that if they were going to press so hard they'd leave their defense disconnected and on an island. So, when we won the ball back, rather than possess through the mid into an attack we went right from the backs to the strikers with a long aggressive ball to try and get Swanson or Smith in a 1 v 1, 2 v 1, or even behind the D. Once we did that, Brazil had to drop more to defend that. Once they did that we had the space and time to get into our possession game. Love to hear your take.

I made the point that I think the adjustments actually started a bit earlier at 30 minutes and carried through to the 2nd half. I think they were less focused on maintaining possession and more focused on where possession was, hence the aggressive balls. Your point on the long balls took me a while to figure out, I think they were aiming for a 1v1 down the left side, targeting Lauren specifically. Let me know what you think if you check it out!

    Excellent breakdown as usual - and the visual aids were a nice plus. I could see the offensive/possession formation fairly clearly during the run of play. What concerns me about it is that Horan as one of the double pivots generally seemed more in the 8 or 10 role. Not sure if that was by design or just the way Horan played it. This left Lavelle a bit more at loose ends, seemed to me. She just didn't have the impact on the game, especially unlocking the low blocks, that she usually does. Maybe that was due to a physical limitation. The midfield seemed to be a weakness, and I'm not sure the midfield roles are completely worked out and trained. Germany's midfield dominated - and that was without Oberdorf. Classically, a possession game requires the midfield to do a lot of that work to keep possession and advance the ball. But these players are capable of adding unique wrinkles, which Hayes obviously recognizes. I think we'll see this system even more developed heading toward the next World Cup. - especially with the return of Macario and Shaw. I expect them to allow Hayes to further develop her midfield strategies.

    • @BusyWatchingWomensSoccer
      @BusyWatchingWomensSoccer 5 วันที่ผ่านมา

      Thank you. I think you're right on that the midfield roles aren't completely worked out, Macario seems like she made the right decision to ensure she can start for this team for years to come and Albert seems like a lock going forwards. Outside of that I'm just not sure. There were definitely some matches where Horan played an 8/10 role and the midfield box moved to a triangle but it never looked like Plan A to me. Lavelle had a really great tournament defensively but didn't seem like she got to do her thing on offense. I'm not sure either of those two played their way into a guaranteed spot going forwards, we'll see.

    I think the Nats got lucky not having to play a full-strength germany, or Spain/France where possession would have been more at a premium. The midfield was a weakness at the Olympics so I expect Hayes to make the biggest changes there. Everyone loves Horan. but she is slow, not a great defender and that's a problem playing the 6 so Hayes tried to get her upfield more. Playing 3 at the back avoided the problem with outside backs unable to go 1v1. Hayes must have seen all the backpassing in the friendlies and decided to go with the back 3. Lots of changes in store between now and 2027. I do wish USSF did a better job sending off retiring Nats heroes like Press and Morgan.

      You're so welcome, I tried to get this at a level that had a little something for everyone.

    Great job of combining short clips with the tactical layout. It really made the "passing sequence" and the "formation switch" clear. I have heard analysts state "On offense, it is a 3-5-1 and on defense it is a 6-3" yadda-yadda, but you are the first one to show me the adjustment in real time. Fascinating.

      Looking at all the games individually was really worth it, I don't think I could've pulled the examples without having analyzed each of the games they way I did. So glad to hear this was laid out well!

    Great analysis! I love the mat. I would love to see little models of the players, but that's probably asking too much lol.

      Thank you. Little model players would be adorable but knowing my abilities with arts and crafts by the time I finish a player they'll be retiring!
