I Started Using Editing Codecs and it Changed My Life!
มุมมอง 9Kปีที่แล้ว
H264 is the king of media delivery for the web and sharing across devices. It's not for editing though! In this video we talk about editing codecs, why I'm not a huge fan of proxies, and why using a proper editing codec will change your life like it did for me. This tutorial talks about Premiere Pro and Davinci Resolve but all of the topics can be applied to the non-linear editor of your choice...

i thought all thee youtubers were editing in quicksync in uncompressed with the files exporting more than 300 gb in 10 videos of footage hahahah i tried it yesterday and my pc froze
Tech savy folks using the new codec while the rest of the world has no clue what x265 or x264 are. 🤔🤨🤡😐😑😐🤷🤦 Or know why their videos are choppy and freezy crashing their comp.
nice👌👍
Is there a way to have the new source "double wide" only be affected with the 3840x1080 output? When I created the source, now all of my sources are 3840x1080 output..
Thanks for this.
You’re smart bro thank you!
Hey thanks for the great video. I am getting 2 video files from the recording out of OBS. Both are the same video double wide but the audio for one video file is the desktop audio and the other recording has the mic audio. What am I missing to have one video file with two tracks instead? @editornox
We capture outdoor footage with (6) DJI Action 4 rec. on UTV for 8 hrs. and DJI drones, etc. 100% of all media is H.265 (4:2:0) Generally 2.7k & 4k /30-60fps . “Puget Systems” designed our workstation for H.265 footage based on their DR 18.6 benchmark testing to arrive at the following build. We would have thrown more money at this but they said it wouldn't make a diff. for H.265. (The following was best spec in 2024) The objective: move several TB per day of H.265 from (7) 512gb SD card to 20TB HDD. Then link 2-3TB to DR 18.6 Media pool (4TB M.2) Multicam edit H.265 and render out H.265. Reduce the massive amount of time converting codec, additional HDD space, moving /converted files, keeping up with copies, etc. All that wasted time could be reduced by putting more money into 2024 hardware to process H.265 then edit head on without the work arounds required. Our old workstation M.2, DR 18.6 Studio, i9-12900k, (no quicksync)64gb RAM, RTX3090 /24 couldn't handle H.265 (1080 or 2.7 at low bitrate) without hours of render cache or proxies. (most will tell you these are high end hardware specs) New workstation: I can delete all timeline render cache. It's rebuilt in no time with 6 camera files 8 hrs. 2.7k / 60 HIGHBIT at full resolution. No comparison. . . But new workstation is much more $$$. The reason I shared this info. is to help others understand that older hardware from just a couple years ago is the weak link in many cases. Use the right tool for the job. If we worked with a diff. codec, the hardware may be diff. Win. 11, Asus ProArt Z790-Creator WiFi, i9-14900k, RAM 96gb, RTX4090 / 24gb, (3) NVMe Gen4 M.2 SSD 4 TB ea. (C:, D:, E: ) with (8) internal HDD - 20TB ea. & (2) SSD-4TB external, (2) SSD-2TB external. Ask yourself how many PC people have experience with older hardware vs 2024 hardware specifically for H.265 and you understand why most still use proxies, etc. 2024 Hardware has finally caught up with H.265 codec but so has the price. We spent a year looking for answers and finally hired professionals to build a purpose built workstation after buying the top HP OMEN 45L just 2 yrs. prior. Newer PC isn't the solution, the right tool for the job is. Hope this helps someone
Started watching to quickly realize you're dealing with H.264 as an acquisition codec. Haha. I'm only ever using it as a proxy editing codec or deliverable codec for web. I shoot primarily in raw or ProRes. But I also edit in DaVinci Resolve and have had powerful machines to handle working in such software for years. I've been editing raw video now for 9-years inside Resolve, and been color grading raw video for around 13-14 years. And, I first got DaVinci Resolve when it was $1,000 to buy the Studio version. Back when you got a Dongle that had to be plugged into the computer's USB Port always in order to run the software. Back then it was solely a color grading application, and I was making ProRes proxies in it to edit in Premiere. In 2015 (with Version 12) I started the switch to Resolve for editorial, and that was primarily to eliminate the roundtrip nature of using an external NLE. I also hated Premiere. I've not looked back and love editing in Resolve. Most of the time I never have hav issues with generating H.264 proxies to edit with. But, that said, I don't really use edit proxies that much. And, I started using H.265 years ago over ProRes Proxy, so I didn't use H.264 that much anyway. Mainly because I preferred 10-Bit 422 at minimum for editing as I have always had a reference display. But I also jump between edit page and color page while working. Thus most of the time I just edit the raw without any transcodes. Again, I work with powerful machines and fast external working drives.
I have recorded Apple prores in iphone which is super super fast for editing. Using black magic camera app we can record directly to phone in Prores 422 HQ/Prores 422/ Prores LT etc. But the storage is issue. Files will be heavier. How can we record in DNX HD in camera? Is all camera supports it ?
It's super nice to watch your videos!! great topic, thanks
So what are the requirements for 1440p 2k Double wide
It’s just the width of resolution x2. 1440 width is 2560 so 5120x1440
@editornox Thank you so much
Great video! I've used this method and two separate instances of OBS & both work equally well in the end. One benefit with two separate instances is you can change the recording path for the game play and the camera which saves time when saving your files to a secondary hard drive but it requires more system resources.
great tutorial
well thanks to you i discovered how easy it is to not record game audio and mic audio on the same track. 😂
problem with these settings: the video is splitting into two videos. its one for the mic audio and the other is the desktop audio. also the audio sounds like its static-y
lol
Thanks for the info
Hi quick question, I'm very new to editing. I'm using Resolve. Is there a video you can link that explains the export method part in more detail? I tried how i think its supposed to be done and im only getting the timeline file itself or the MP4 that does show up is not the full timeline. Thanks in advance for any help 🙌
Thank you. Trying to figure out how to get Davinci Resolve to play nice. How exactly do you change the codecs? Do you have to convert the video files before loading them into Davinci Resolve? Or do they get converted inside Davinci?
DaVinci Resolve has a built in proxy flow for generation of proxy files in the codec you want and give you smooth editing and will automatically use the original files for export render. Proxy settings are set in Project settings but you have to trigger the generation of the proxy files.
You can use the built in proxies or optimized workflow that the other replier mentioned or you can use something like ffmpeg or shutter encoder to do it beforehand.
Whats it look like when your streaming? Or is this for recording only?
How do i post my videos in high qaulity? I post them at 1080p and that come out really washed most of the time, while some other youtubers who release in 1080p are much better looking?
And what do you think of H265? I'm watching tests on TH-cam where they compared an image rendered to H264 vs H265 and it seems wonderful to me how at such a low weight, it maintains an almost identical quality to the original video file, while the H264 destroys the image to a lower number of bits. Is it easy to edit if you put videos in H265 on the timeline or does it get stuck a lot?
This little views? Bruh! This is gold!
We need more of this type of content! I find myself being inspired and wishing to do things Like Content Creators I watch More often than Not! Congratulations!!!!
Thank you, Sir. I just grew a few brain cells, thanks to your video. I never knew about the export method that you speak of. I've been using the crop method for 3 years of doing let's-plays. Thanks to you, I will now be able to edit my gaming videos using the export method.
You're a LIFESAVER dude I've been looking for a way to do this for a week now, Thank you soo much
Glad it helped!
My facecam looks great, but my window capture doesn't. any tips?
What makes it look bad? Is it blurry, pixelated, bad colors? The specific way it looks bad could help figure it out.
@@editornox thx but it was the just the output resolution was low, I se it to the Base resolution and it was solved.
Being able to loop well, is knowing how well can you make it subtle and yet make people go, WOAH DID it loop and then have those viewers comment, Slick loop
thats average and average is FINE!!! it has a great personality. GOod video,
Dang I learned so much but just seems easier to hire you as my editor :)
you really dont explain how to make each source half the screen. I done what you explained and my game is the entire size of the screen. No mention of how to fix that
This sounds like using 4K monitors on 1080p OBS canvas. Is that the case? If so, you would just shrink it down until it fits. Sorry if I'm wrong, I don't entirely understand what you mean.
This is the best answer I have found on this issue and it wasted no time!
This is a good method, but I have a bit of a problem. It only records my voice, not the desktop audio. I don't know whats happening because I followed the instructions perfectly but its still only recording my voice. Help?
Either you don't have the tracks set up correctly, or whatever sound you're trying to capture isn't going to the proper sound source in Windows.
@@editornox alright, thanks
does it work the same for davinci resolve? if not have you made a video about it?
The concept works, you just have to adjust accordingly.
you deserve 1m subs #algorithamboost
MrBeast makes gaming videos?!
nah he makes make up videos like james charles nah jk yeah he dose
It's on a separate channel but yeah, they're pretty high speed like his regular content.
This is an updated version of my "Record Videos like Markiplier" video. It gives a bit more information and answers some questions I got.
hey nox, what if I have a 2k monitor (2560x1440) and want to upload 2k video, what resolution do I have to set for base canva and output scaled? thx u!
Just double the width, so 5120x1440. I tried this size last year and got some vram errors
This has really helped a lot. I don’t have the best quality but from last 2 videos to the one before. You see mad differences 😂
What’s the name of the video editing software you use?
In this particular video it was Davinci Resolve, but I mainly use Premiere Pro. I occasionally go poke at Resolve just to see what's happening in the editing software sphere.
@@editornox can you do a guide on how to use either? Basic tips, and things to look out for/things you use that you maybe you wish you knew at first when first trying the program out?
when i zoom it in my game play looks like bad quality do you have any idea why
'PromoSM'
I'm gonna follow the method, if it works out for me I'll sub.
Help! Whenever I change the sequence settings to 1920x1080 the prieview size has to change with it resulting in blurry video when i scale the double wide back to size to match the 1920x1080 am i doing something wrong. The Sequence settings start off automatically in the doublwide resolution
Option 2 keep premiere as 3040x1080. Can't find a work around to get it to work.
You need to create a 1920x1080 sequence and then drop footage in. If you drag footage to empty sequence space it’ll create a sequence based on what you dropped.
@editornox I'm glad you understood what I meant, and I greatly appreciate the reply! I've subscribed a while ago. Thank you for your insight!
I appreciate you being here!@@fairleemadegaming
Amazing Thanks buddy!
I'm curious how we can edit 9:16 and keep our camera looking good like yours does. Maybe the double video layer/crop
It's a combination of my camera being recorded at full resolution, high bitrate, and it's a bit of overkill camera for it's purposes.
