Harley Benton's Telecaster-Style, EMG-equipped "Metal" guitar is an attractive buy considering its features and price-point. But is it any good? Is it worth it? And are the £15 Amazon special pair of pickups I replace the EMGs with even functional!?

For more fuzzy noises check out my band, Ghozer on all streaming services: ditto.fm/black-lotus I was excited to see Electro Harmonix come out with their take on the Boss HM-2 circuit. For more fuzzy noises check out my band, Ghozer on all streaming services: ditto.fm/black-lotus The Boss HM-2 is a legend, but still a pigeon-holed, meme of a pedal. The bass big muff also rocks on guitar!
So what you're saying is that Electro-Harmonix smashes all the muff? Right on.
Jaguar single coil pickups are the way to go for this
I have both including the slider version of the okdoomer. The AG stacks better at the end of multiple gain stages especially after a rat but the OKD sounds better stand alone than the AG.
Can we just take a moment to talk about that clean tone? Gorgeous
are you saying first phase or fuzz face
...Fuzz Face
Love a eq pedal with mine
That blues tone! Brilliant video buddy :) Victor...
Cheers, Victor!
Очень толковые видео. Спасибо
Спасибо!
Awsome ! New subs
How the fuck did this guy went from Metallica type shit to Gojira type stuff I don’t get it He’s too versatile
I’m no expert, and if a muffin isn’t a fuzz.. What gear did the girl group of the 80ties “we’ve got a fuzz box and we’re gonna use it” use as a fuzz box ?
Video for reference: th-cam.com/video/9Dcxgtc9so8/w-d-xo.html
Sounds like some sort of "vintage" fuzz. you could achieve it by "starving" a Fuzz face or Tone Bender style circuit.
@@doctorfuzzzdirtbox Thanks. I only came to this pedal thing via Zoom CDR which a lot of synthesist (like) me us and now i get recommendatios by youtube. Ths reminded me about that group and triggered the question. The Fuzzbox band was featured in the early 80ties radio programmes of John Peel.
Batteries last long when you unplug the guitar when you are done playing.
No shit. My point is that I keep forgetting to do it
Gain staging matters
Absolutely
People don't wanna think for themselves and stick to received norms? I even get literal clean tones from it!
I noticed that a Muff works so well with a TS9. On my Peavey, there’s a Muff effect so I paired that with my actual TS9 and holy hell! What a revelation! It sounded great and despite how chunky it was, it actually turned out to be a pretty damn good tone for King Diamond and Mercyful Fate! I had the tone higher on both (~60-65%) with decreased muff volume and 70% Sustain. It sounded great. Next pedal I’m getting is a muff. The MXR Distortion+ and TS9 already make up a larger part of my tone. Keep the D+ in line for Iron Maiden stuff and put the muff on for Mercyful Fate! (Btw, an EQ pedal goes a long way people!)
Awesome Job 🤘
Both sound like shit. The amount of volume and gain is interfering with standard operations
Just wondering why you didn’t include the regular big box NYC Big Muff?
Albeit mine is a 00's "Frantone", it's very, very similar to the deluxe in core sound and I wanted the shootout to be about options rather than the bare bones standard. It's still great, though!
Locking tuners are better
Why tho?
2:11 move the tone knob on the Muff.
Doesn't solve a thing
Try the Prince of tone, it’s 1/2 of the king of tone, actually a nice pedal, and no you don’t have to crank the tone knob up all the way, there’s even an internal treble trim pot, curious if the demon fx clone has one, might open it up and see. I’ve heard good things about the Ly rock king of clone too.
First off the hisumitas is the ultimate muff secondly run the slamurai from all pedal into it and it will show you the entire universe !!
I’ve always said, “If you need to run a fuzz into an overdrive to enjoy it, you don’t like fuzz.” So please…leave some of those NOS transistors for those of us who do!
Did you try the Basic Audio Foxey Lady? My all time favourite Big Muff!!
Muff > TS sound terrible and I really love it !
Unplug your guitar after use and a 9v should last a fair while.
Yeah, I know, man. It's just that I'm crap at remembering that! Haha!
Ben c est de la couille en boite, je viens de l acheter et ca fait pas du tout cette varieté de sons!!
It's not all that great of a fuzz. I've sold it since making this, but it certainly does what I demonstrated. no trickery was used. What is your core amp sound like?
@@doctorfuzzzdirtbox thanks for answering! I m a beginner, so.. My amp is a basic epiphone, 5w, with only Volume, Treble and Bass... I tried several conbinaisons, but nothing sounds like your demo...
@@daviddumont5582 OK, the issue can go 2 ways and both to do with gain on the amp. You might not have direct control of it either. But if it's a very clean amp and you can't get more signal into it, you can end up with a very thin, scratchy sound. If it's always a little distorted and you struggle to get lower signal into it, it can sound very muddy. Speaker size can also play into either of those when it's small. I suspect, with a small, 5w amp, we're talking the latter. Thing is, unless you go into something very similar to a Fender Deluxe Reverb, the sound you get compared to me can be invariably different. It's also going through an SM57 microphone which has its own filter compared to hearing it in person. But that's all part of the fun. Different gear will sound different with different gear and in different situations!
I don't know about JHS but David Gilmour coudn't be wrong...
When did he ever run a Big Muff into a tube Screamer? He's never even used a Tube Screamer.
@@doctorfuzzzdirtboxoh sorry I meant an overdrive, not a tube screamer.
Would it “accurate” to say Muffs and Rats are in a weird but cool hybrid grey area considered ‘Fuzztortion’?
Absolutely! The Rat can get very Muff like at its upper end of gain and that's when people describe it as "fuzzy" - but it ain't no Harmonic Perculator, it's definitely more of a muff with mids and cut bass. I think fuzztortion describes them perfectly.
I cant decide between the deluxe soviet and the deluxe bass for both bass and 7 strings, I want to play stoner and some metallica
Hmmmm, that's a tough one but I'm leaning towards the Soviet for the Wicker switch
double track the recording: one with OD first, the other with pedals swapped. mix them to taste.
I have the S-Type of this guitar and I love it. Everything was perfect on it, but admittedly the QC from Thomann can be a crapshoot but the higher end ones are okay. Interesting to hear the issues with it, but I guess you don't know what it went through before you got it. The usual Fusions IIIs HT are £295, but the III range does go all the way up to the price of an EMG model new as well, there's a couple of models of the III that are currently the same price as this. Also, for my ears, those £15 pickups sound utterly dreadful XD
Are they!? Haha! 😂 Well, I'm mostly pushing into a Big Muff style pedal so nothing organic survives, but I would agree that the EMGs were certainly higher end.
Beautiful Tele. I love it. Also love the Ehx amp.
I hate the Muff tone stack. It sounds awesome if the bass player is using a bi amp rig with one distorted by the Muff. The Rat is underrated for these heavy genres. Ideally I'd want my bassist using the Muff and me with a Rat and TS or an EQ to boost the mids. I'm anticipating the video and hoping one of these use a tone stack bypass or an actual EQ. I know Maxon made a Muff with a parametric EQ. That pedal is hard to find.
Really! Gunna go on the hunt for that...
“A tube can go into a muff, and really scream but a muff can’t go into a tube!” 😂 Definitely the funniest part of the whole video!
Thank you for this video series. It convinced me to pick up an EHX Deluxe instead of being distracted by shiny paint jobs and boutique allure. I still want a Priestess at some point, but I'll wait until I find a good deal down the road.
Awesome, man! Enjoy!
New to pedals. First thing I got was a tumnus with eq cuz I wanted to pick one and go. Adds the perfect amount of meat to my tweeds, especially helpful at bedroom levels. If I peg it, it can get fairly nasty, but I like it mellowed out.
I like a Klon (which is what the Tumnus is based on) mellowed out, too. It's a great boost and with the EQ you've got a lot of flexibility in there. Maybe all you'll ever need for OD!
@@doctorfuzzzdirtbox I'm starting to think it may be. Curious how it'll be mated up with the Black Magick R that's on the way, mostly for my tele, but also curious about my p90 rig. Thanks for the get back. Cheers.
If you think I demoed the Muff>TS wrong, check this out: th-cam.com/users/shorts_XVijxjgceU?si=cFgvr_KuzLlBEboJ
Uhh, this isn't really right; the demonstration. The drive on the Tube Screamer should be turned all the way down, not at 12:30. It's for a mids boost. JHS pointed this out...
Yeah, you and who knows how many other people try to assert this but if you check out my reel (th-cam.com/users/shorts_XVijxjgceU?si=cFgvr_KuzLlBEboJ) you see that I didn't just whack it on and immediately give up. I tried every setting I could. In my humble opinion, it all sounds like dogshit. Josh used a Jam pedal that's based on a TS and it seems to have a little different character but I still think that example sounds like complete ass, too. When you put it before, you get a mids boost. After, you get a bass cut, mids boost, treble cut and headroom squash. If you like it, fine. But no mount of fiddling makes it sound any better to me.
@@doctorfuzzzdirtbox hmmm ... It's definitely a lot tighter. I'll try it like this for awhile. It does sound better for chords at the least.
If you want a "transparent" boost just get an EQ pedal, don't change the EQ setting and just max out the level control.
Very true!
I think you can do a lot of different sounds with the HM2. One of my favourites: vol on full, low at 10 o'clock, high on 2 o'clock, gain almost off, into a slightly overdriven amp. But the most fun setting is the classic swedish chainsaw! 😂
I use my HM-2 the same way. But, yeah Swedish Death can be cathartic...
Absolutely fantastic content mate! Cheers!
Thanks! 🤘
I actually use USB rechargeable batteries in all of my active guitars. I have a half a dozen batteries, so a replacement for each guitar, they are actually great.
Woh Woh Woh! That's a great idea! Didn't know they even existed. Thanks man!
I like using fuzz as almost a boost into OD, so I keep the basic color of the tone the same. I’m not going for Doomy stuff like this tho… more classic rock, lead guitar stuff.
I always put the Tubescreamer after distortion or fuzz. The TS just has a tendency to swallow up everything after it and make it sound like a TS, too.
Great demo and rocking song.
Thanks! 🤘🏻
I prefer the fuzz first. It’s pretty QOTSA lead sounding
Ok I was looking for the Buff Muff websites pelvic floor exercises and I came across this. 😅
Haha! 🤣 Welcome to a new world!
This works great for my Beatles tribute band
