It's Not the Car
เข้าร่วมเมื่อ 22 ธ.ค. 2023
It’s Not the Car is a podcast about people, motorsport, and how we all work under pressure.
In other words, we tell racing stories and leave out the boring parts.
Ross Bentley is a former IndyCar driver and an internationally renowned performance coach and author. Jeff Braun is a championship-winning race engineer. Sam Smith is an award-winning journalist and a former executive editor of Road & Track magazine. Together, we explore the emotion at the heart of the machine.
We don’t love racing for the nuts and bolts-we love it for what it asks of the bag of meat at the wheel.

A Motorcycle Racing Instructor on Why You Keep Crashing — w/Nick Ienatsch -- It's Not the Car #51
How is speed on a bike different from speed in a car? Is chasing the limit different if you’re more likely to get hurt? And just why did your crazy old Uncle Eddie yardsale that ratty Ducati of his across a field, anyway?
Complex questions. Except Uncle Eddie. Dude drives a Chevelle and loves Foreigner a little too much, you know? Probably got hot blooded one night, wanted to know what love was. Maybe it felt like the first time? Tires were cold as ice, though, played too many head games! Blue morning! But I digress.
Nick Ienatsch is the creator of the Yamaha Champions Riding School, one of the country’s best two-wheel performance training programs. He’s also a writer, a racer, and a hell of a good teacher. Before his current gig, Nick spent more than a decade as the lead instructor at the celebrated Freddie Spencer Riding School.
We ask Nick about motorcycles in this one. Ross, Sam, and Jeff are all bike people, but that's not a prereq here. At the core, this is an episode for anyone who likes wheels and owns a brain.
And maybe also Uncle Eddie.
RELATED TRIVIA: This episode marks the end of INTC’s first year on air! Fifty-two shows, one every week-weird, right? Honestly, we’re just geeked to still be here. Thank you for listening!

Pro Drifting is Harder Than You Think - w/Vaughn Gittin, Jr. -- It's Not the Car #50
มุมมอง 48428 วันที่ผ่านมา
Fifteen years ago, a guy from Maryland took a camcorder and a bone-stock Ford Mustang GT to Japan and filmed a series of TH-cam videos on drifting and local car culture. Back home in the States, a handful of people-including INTC producer Mike Perlman, then 15 years old-watched those videos and asked, What the hell is going on here? By that point, Vaughn Gittin, Jr. was already an accomplished ...

Why Do Car Magazines Run Track Tests? - w/Tony Quiroga -- It's Not the Car #46

Tony Quiroga is the editor-in-chief of Car and Driver. For the last 18 years, his magazine has rented Virginia International Raceway once a year. They’ve borrowed the best new fast cars, from hot hatches to exotics. And each time, they’ve spent three days-normal people, not pro drivers-lapping nonstop, looking for time. Sound like a dream day? A pile of stress? Tony is an old friend of INTC, an...
IMSA Champ Explains: What the Heck is Race Strategy?

Once, humans set foot on the moon. Some steely eyed engineer types did some math and took some gambles, and then some steely eyed pilot types sat on a big firework and flew off. J G Parry Thomas paid £125.00 for Babs.
Hi, he was born in 1885, that is what is on his Grave Stone. He was Welsh, born in Wrexham North Wales. His father was a Curate. He had 20 Patents to his name. Check out the Thomas Transmission system.
The head of aerodynamics talked about the clr in a german podcast. In his opinion the bodywork in the front was not stiff enough. In high speeds it would deform down and stall the front causing the car to flip. I will try and find a link and timestamp.
Hearing Sam describe his experience, I'm reminded of Richard Hammond at his F1 test saying "I can't think fast enough" Sounds like a huge amount of work to drive
Fantastic podcast heard about you from Smoking Tire podcast. One interesting comment I found you saying was that Max was mature. I don't seem to understand where this idea has come from since the last few years (since 2021) has shown when he has his back to the wall and other drivers are pulling a move on him he can't use his skills to stop them and instead causes an accident.
Vaughn is so well spoken. And quite and interesting guy. Let him know I’m putting in an application to RTR!!!
Great guest and positive knowledge transfer between similar disciplines. I've been reading Nick's writing for ages, and he's great. He graciously suffered my friends and my company at an AHRMA awards banquet last year a Blackhawk Farms. Great guy and fast rider!
I am looking forward to my flowers for watching this whole thing 😊
White Triplex, another LSR car, used three Liberty V12s, so 81 liters!
Zborovski was insanely rich. Equivalent of a billionare at the age of sixteen. Owned acres of manhattan, and blocks of fifth avenue. His mom was an Astor.
Great interview, content, and takeaways. I had the honor and previlege of attending YCRS a few years back and Mr. Ienatsch and his instructors are true professionals. Not only did YCRS improve my motorcycle skills, I can also confirm the lessons taught have made me a better driver, too. Thanks, and keep up the great work.
Such a great episode. I've had the pleasure of doing both motorcycle and car track days and motocycle schools. Geometry changes in some cars, especially street cars, matter. Like lift throttle oversteer on semi-trailing arm rear suspension. Once you know the why, you can drive around it.
I'm in this for Sam's monologues mostly. (but I'm learning a ton from Ross and Jeff) It's fun watching him completely nerd out because he loves this stuff so much!
You guys do such a great job of telling a story. You make it truly compelling. Thanks for doing this show!
Another awesome episode, regarding Jeff's question about tire and power limits I think it would be great to have a series set up similar to NASA spec Miata to make it more affordable and structured for the grassroot guys - something below the pro spec Vaughn mentioned, amateur but still competitive, maybe even a feeder series for Formula D
Love it - thanks guys. Is it Spring yet? New to me 991 is waiting on me to put these experiences to practice when it arrives. (Winter now in Toronto :( …. Appreciate your expertise!
Very interesting for discussing the mental aspect of drifting, and I am interested to know in the case of Robert Throne, him being quite an experienced and multiple times national champion SCCA autocrosser might have helped. Thats another sport where you spent ages just standing around doing everything but driving but you are sitting at the start and you need to switch on for that next 40-60 sec.
Fantastic episode!!!
I'm surprised that he is advocating at all for robot/AI operators. If it's all mechanical, does anyone care?
Thanks for having me on friends!!
We appreciate you!!
Amazing work, I would advise the editor to correct the esses to clean the consonants ( especially Vaughn's)
Awesome episode! Interview more drifters, there are many different driving techniques and chassis setup styles to dive into
I really loved the Vaughn's video of watching James and Adam lz run at Vir and he was able to deal with 2 opposite drivers and make them both better
51:24 "We are Group B rally". @VaughnGittinJr Never before has the magnificent insanity, violence, and sheer visceral nature of Formula Drift been summed up so well
I want what he is smoking
One of the best episodes so far. Very well done. Vaughn's insight into mind training was interesting.
Haven't watched yet, just wanna say Vaughn rocks and I'm so happy to see pro drifting being talked about. So much amazing stuff in that world, and it's cool to see a pro motorsport that's more of a party than a science fair. Science fairs are awesome for us nerds, but drifting is so damn easy to enjoy and share as a spectator. Edit: I should add that I meant "party" as a spectator, not a driver. Didn't mean to discredit the skill level of the drivers at all
It is a great story that cannot be told often enough! Thank you for taking the time to tell it.
This is my second comment. After watching this I just had to say something. I respect Ross, but this goes against everything I understand about driving Porsches. In online sim racing, some leagues will prevent you from driving Porsche entirely because "they're too different to drive", and there are some people who just instinctively and naturally drive faster in the Porsche than in front engeine RWD cars, even top-tier aliens setting world record laptimes, will set a laptime significantly slower in a theoretically faster car that isn't a Porsche. So, no, I don't think "Porsche driver" is a myth. I think there are people who are naturaclly predisposed to doing better in a Porsche than in other cars. Also, driving a Porsche is just more fun than the other cars anyway. Sure I'd be happy as a clam to be racing any real life car, but I would opt to drive a Porsche every time.
Thank you for doing this episode I'm looking forward to it I drive 911's in every sim I have ever driven And everyone always says 911s are wierd, don't drive them, but they're the only ones that make sense to me
33:00 a quick google search proved this right! many a modern 911, even 718s going round t17 three wheeled!!!
That was fun! Thanks guys
This is mental!!! You guys Will be at Le Mans with Jeff? That would be great, I'll bought a t-shirt for sure!!
Would love to see Sue on again when there are more research developments. The human mind is truly the last frontier. When Senna describes seeing a light, that's fundamentally what we're all made of, just riding a wave of it. He was really good at catching big ones. I'd suspect the pineal gland has a lot to do with euphoria and time dialation experienced. It's a shame psychedelics have been locked away in time when we're very advanced and can better understand the mechanisms of consciousness
I watched it live as a 17 year old. Like others, I was just thrilled to watch a race live on TV, and I only vaguely remember the fight other than Ken Squier saying "And there's a fight!".
Everybody wants to attain the flow state None are prepared to exit it unexpectedly at the worst possible moment ;)
I'm currently reading Scalzi's Collapsing Empire series. In that universe "The Flow" is their hyperspace analog / faster than light travel medium. Some of the characters are Flow Physicists. And now I'm listening to one of my favorite podcasts where you're discussing Flow with a Flow Psychologist, and I've gotta tell you, it's really honking up my Flow! 😅
You know I live for this stuff 🙏 #innerspeedsecrets
The piston engine goes BOING, BOING, BOING the Mazda engine goes HMMMM
144 mph over 4 miles is 1 min 40 sec. Hell of a lap.
I watched that fight live.I was 11 years old at the time.Got me into nascar.Once again great show.Love this channel.
Ken Squier "borrowed" a lot of ideas from visiting Bathurst, that he put into that first live Daytona 500 telecast, including RaceCam, music selections, and calling the event the Great ... American... Race.
How many times did Danica Patrick chase and punch people after on track incidents? Guys would just have to walk away - couldn't punch back.
I’m going straight to hell for this! Willie T Ribs gotta backhand for any racecar drivin’ ho! Please lord have mercy on me and my horrible humor.🤦🏻♂️😉
Backwards through a hedge! The only way to properly drive a 911
Yes please make this a regular part of the show. How does Sonoma compare to Laguna? COTA to Road America?
A simple observation - you can make the ports any size you want because you don't need valves to close them.
THIS NEEDS TO BE A REGULAR FORMAT. Seriously, once a month, 3 or 4 times a year. There are so many tracks that are deceptively simple, Lime Rock and Summit Point come to mind immediately. Comlex tracks that could take a lifetime to master like Sebring, VIR, Spa, and the Nürburgring. Having Ross break down each corner is amazing. Would love to hear Jeff's input on setup changes he typically goes to for the problems drivers encounter and where the limit of that is based on other attributes of the track. I'm a truck driver by day and I've enjoyed these podcasts enough to support you all on Patreon. I have a profile rig setup in here and I love to get on iRacing when I have the time and energy. I'm always about a second off the fastest guys on a 60 second lap track, 1.5 on a 90, and two on a 120 but VIR and Laguna have just been a struggle to find 4 seconds with the Spec Miata.
Wonderful! I'd like to hear more of your stories from your journalism career. I'll put your book on my Christmas list
Great interview! And while I don't own one, I'm a big fan of the giant killer the Cobalt SS was. I think for CD's 20th Lightning Lap anniversary, a clean Cobalt SS would need to make an appearance with a set of modern performance track tires and see if it can challenge the current L1 leaders. Actually, so many great cars were handicapped by the tire technology from 10-15 years ago: C6 Z06, the mentioned GT40, etc. Anyway, love the podcast and the racing insight is fantastic.
Listened for 4 minutes. No car discussion. Good bye.
