Sandia Mountain Natural History Center
United States
เข้าร่วมเมื่อ 18 ต.ค. 2010
We are an environmental education center in the Sandia Mountains east of Albuquerque, New Mexico on 128 acres owned by Albuquerque Public Schools (APS), and jointly run by APS and the New Mexico Museum of Natural History and Science (NMMNHS). The center has been teaching programs for students since 1967.
We provide Ecology Field Programs for all 5th graders in Albuquerque Public Schools, and for many from Rio Rancho Public Schools and other area schools. Our educators additionally lead statewide outreach programs, public events, teacher workshops, and design outdoor education curriculum.
** Please note that the SMNHC and its trails are not open to the public, except for special events.**
You can find more information about the Sandia Mountain Natural History Center (SMNHC), our school, summer, and public programs; and access our lessons at www.nmnaturalhistory.org/smnhc .

It sounds so beautiful ❤
Thank you for posting. Great advice !
Glad it was helpful!
Bro, you’re supposed to take the skin off! It’s just weird how Americans don’t know how to eat fruits but if I gave you a cheeseburger, God help us all.
Many don't realize but the Holy Ghost Creek was Forrest Fenn's special place. (The Blaze)
Interesting, thanks
Which mountain bike you are using?
Fezzari Abajo Peak. They are now just Ari Bicyles.
@@smnhc1 thanks 🙏
I recently read about the history of the Sandias, which said there was a 500 acre wildfire in the Manzanitas in 1989.
I bet that’s it! Thanks for the info!
A classic. This is a 3-water-bottle hike for me if I am climbing it.
I miss Albuquerque so much one day i shall return and go on this wonderful memorable hike.
Thanks for watching, NM is an awesome place.
You are so wrong, typical NM crap!!
Thanks for watching!
Thank you for this video. I wonder how the trees are doing there in light of climate change.
Trees struggle in many ways from climate change. Hotter temps, less water, more fire, and insect infestations are just some of the ways they are affected. Thanks for watching.
That's what I call "getting away from it all"!
It is a very remote area for sure.
When I was in the area last year, I talked to a local ranger who had been there a couple of years. He was a Cibola National Forest ranger. He had no idea that the Sandia and Manzano Mountains east of Albuquerque were also in the Cibola National Forest. I showed him on a map. It has bits and pieces all over the state.
It is strange how fragmented the Cibola NF is but that's how government operates sometimes.
Really enjoy your content, is this a personal channel or through some organization?
It is through the Sandia Mountain Natural History Center which is an environmental education center run by the New Mexico Museum of Natural History and Science.
I was the subscriber who asked the question, thanks for the video! I did make it last week in my small SUV without scraping bottom. Love it over there.
Glad you made it and thanks for the inspiration.
I drove my rental car on 165 which worked out fine but was probably a terrible idea 😂 I love the crest and palomas peak!
I feel like its very suitable for a rental 😉
NM 165 is pretty rough these days.
it definitely needs some work!
Pine tree leaf burn easily
Could you peel off the hairs?
Thank you so much for this video! They are, by far, my favorite bird! Such beauty, agility and big personality in an micro package. This video really made my day. Thanks!
Our pleasure!
Just went here with my kiddos today, it was definitely fun, but a lot of crawling for me compared to them lol. Those stairs might keep me from ever going again though!!!
It's a fun little trip, thanks for watching!
My guess is Bigfoodeer scat.
Bigfooelk scat actually! Thanks for watching
Visit 1,000 flowers or just 1 feeder? 👍🤣 Really enjoy your channel and content!
Thanks for watching!
Thank you.....I thoroughly enjoyed making this hike with you....
Glad you enjoyed it
Bigfoot scat! (disguised as deer/elk scat) 👣
I was fortunate enough to actually find one of those washed out railroad spikes! I play in Porter all the time if I’m not bushwhacking Cienega or Las Huertas!
Very cool, thanks for watching!
Escape Albuquerque, avoid getting murdered, heat is the least of the problem
Flower power!
Very nice getaway, and I'm jealous of your "living room"! Speaking of dirt roads, I used to be able to handle the "back road" route 165 from Placitas to the Sandia Crest Highway in a Honda Civic in the "good old days", but in recent years it has gotten so bad that I don't even try in a higher-clearance vehicle anymore. Do you know the current conditions of that road?
Last time I went down it was about 1.5 years ago and it was pretty rough. I might have to try again and make a video about it!
Also, one of our employees got her vehicle stuck on the better end (a mile in from the Crest rd.) in March because it was a sheet of ice.
@@smnhc1 That's not good-- I thought it was usually closed in winter. I've been able to get to Palomas Peak TH easily but not sure about Las Huertas picnic area or Sandia Cave and on towards Placitas.
@@smnhc1 Follow-up: I drove it today, and it wasn't so bad. My cervical spine was not amused, but the rest of me had a great time! Las Huertas picnic area is a true gem, but has seen better days.
@@bakarka No, it's left open in winter but as a true travel at your own risk experience with no plowing or maintenance!
Fantastic video, and I'm very thankful you shared the route. Thanks so much for posting!
Glad you enjoyed it!
Many thanks for this great coverage.
Glad you enjoyed it!
Awesome!
Glad you think so!
Loved this show and tell of wildflowers- so much was covered! Learned a lot!
Glad you liked it! :)
I grew up in Roswell, my grandparents moved there in 1930 and started Dean motor company until 1986. The water from Bottomless Lakes is fed by an underground aquifer that comes from Cloudcroft NM, and takes 17 years to get to Bottomless Lakes, so I have been told by past Superintendents of the park. On the East side of the Lea lake there is a Model T that someone let it roll of the cliff to collect the insurance back in 1929 or early 1930, after the stock market crash of November 1929. The car is about 15 feet under water, when I was 15 or 16 swam down to it and sat in the drivers seat. (Stupid thing to do) The tower that you were wondering about is the old water tower. They removed the water tank in the early 1960’s. Lot and lots of GREAT MEMORIES THERE! Thanks for sharing!!
Thank you for all that interesting information and history, and glad you liked the video!
Thanks for the incredibly useful information, #fabulousfiana!!
Glad it was helpful!
It's been a long time since I've been around that area but I used to love both the Sandia and Manzano Mountains. Beautiful Mountain areas. I haven't visited the Pecos Wilderness area but it looks as good.
It really is!
I hiked to the top last year it was awesome
Glad you enjoyed it!
Now if only someone would reopen the Crest House for eats and treats. I miss that tourist trap. lol
Agreed!
I had a close encounter with a blacktail rattlesnake in the Sandias recently. I did not try to handle it!
Very cool.
😬Vanessa! 😳 Gila Monster is beautiful, markings remind me of patterns used in southwest jewelry, rugs and pottery. I can hear Indiana Jones “snakes, why did it have to be snakes”… 😆 Really cool, thank you. (Edit: just visited Zoocrew site⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️Excellent.)
Thanks for watching!
did you have your gear strapped in to the boat?
We sure did!
🦨🦊🐈oh my! I appreciate Skunks from a distance 😅they are wonderful for digging up hornet nests in the ground, which makes mowing safer. Glad these were able to be relocated. 🙏🏼
Thanks for watching! It was fun having them around for a little bit.
Nice to see the effect of a decent monsoon!
It sure is!
Beautiful! Wondering if those greener circles in the grass were from mushrooms… the mycorrhiza adding nutrients to the grasses. Thank you for giving us a preview of the caldera.
Could be, I was wondering about them as well but I don't have a good explanation.
Great video. Thanks for sharing
Thanks for watching!
😂
Love it!
Another great video! Thanks for posting!
Thanks for watching!
Who’s here from that one Texan comment in dying voice dudes TH-cam shorts,
Ah yes, the turkey! A strong, proud bird of courage and moral character! Fly high proud bird! Fly high!🥲🇺🇸🦃🎇
The great Triassic mural at the NMMNHS painted by paleontologist artist Margaret Colbert hopefully will be saved in the new Hall being constructed. No better depiction of a Triassic environment!
