3D Printed and Topology Optimized Drone!
With today's incredibly easy access to technology, inspiring new concepts are possible! We combine the latest simulation technology, known as 'topology optimization,' with powder bed 3D printing and freely available drone hardware and software.
The resulting tricopter is inspired by the 'Orca' VTOL design from the 1995 computer game 'Command and Conquer' and features a unique, bionic design, acting as a proof of concept. A VDI webinar was also held to show the more technical details of the development process (German speaking). You will find the link here when available.
The interesting aspect is that the technology is versatile and can be adapted not only to the development of drones but also to heavy machinery, customer-tailored bike parts or even art, depending on one's needs.
The future is going to be exciting!

I really feel honoured by your interest in the STL files and the frame kit! I haven't shared them yet because the current design is in the prototype stage. While it works great, it requires a lot of initial tuning and will likely cause some educational crashes in the process. When I share the STL files or sell a kit in the future, the quality will be high enough to ensure you have a great experience with it! I'll keep you updated as the plans crystallize!

it is amazing to see all the new tools that have emerged and matured over the last decade for everyday people. I would love to see a full size version this concept aircraft

Glad you like it :) I am now expanding to a real VTOL, combined with FPV usage! Its based on similar technology and will be pretty fast and manoeuvrable. The target is a first flight in October. As a second project, the orig. Orca design will get a small function update such that you can use without issues. As I juggle a full time job, family and rest of live, things tend to take time. I feel honored for all the interest, though :)
...I'm surprised it took us this long to make a lore-accurate Orca Fighter, considering how many dozen projects have already been done in the past two decades. I'm impressed!

Which CAD program did you use for the design process?
Altair Inspire. It also perrfomed most of the simulation work.

It's interesting that the Orca seems to angle forward when going faster, because that's exactly how it acts in the original game; in fact the craft has two sprite sets in the game, a flat one and a forward-angled one. (For the record, all vehicle sprite sets are typically 32 prerendered frames to get a full 360° rotation)

Printed in carbon fiber nylon this would be nearly indestructible. Please let the 3D printers of the world play with this design and improve upon it. Only by freeing the data can we all improve the world together.

Hi! I use Windows 10. As far as I know, Altair software also ahs Linux versions. I´d suggest, just get a test license and test it.

sieht gut aus und da kann man wirklich noch viel optimieren. Wenn es unbedingt ducts sein müssen würd ich eher auf 5-6 Zoll gehen. Die Flugzeiten sind dann etwa besser. Ducts fressen mindestens 20% vom Schub, bei kleinen mehr, bei den größeren weniger. Eigentlich will man gar keine ducts, das will nur das Marketing wegen der Optik.
Die machen ja nun den Nachbau aus. Das ist als ob Du einen Nudelsalat ohne Nudeln nachbauen willst. ;-)

Well done. Recently got a 3D resin printer for model train, started printing gears and soon gear boxes. But it got me thinking, robotics. I really hate the current generation of subtractive machined ugly bots. I was thinking about AI generated skeletons and lightweight materials. Warzone2100 is my current game, not just because it has "AI" that can be modded. You have a new sub.
I can't wait to buy a kit. Great job.
Since this is the same optimization tactic that skeletons use to be light but strong, technically this drone is bones

You know whnen I see videos of these type of design and builds it makes me wonder if the U.S. Military has made any prototypes like this? The concept and designs on these small scale products work but what about large full scale? I realize the cost would be enormous due to all the mechanical and electronics involved but I keep wondering if we'll see these in real life? Anyway great video. Thoroughly enjoyed it. Can't wait to see more.
