All the life experience she's had, has been bad and painful. I would work with no mouth contact at all in a round pen for months. Just sit and let her stretch and move. After six months she might be receptive to training. I hate racing.

I taught my tb head down relax que. We wouldn't do anything until her body language was relaxed and dropping her head. Your gal could benefit from a calm down que. Gentle tug on the reins down or if you're riding scissoring the reins. With the word relax and lots of positive reinforcement when she did drop her frame. She also hated jointed bits, did much better in a straight mule bit

I'm loving watching your progress with Pea. I don't know if this is of any use to you and things very likely are done differently in the UK. A long time ago, when I was young, in South Africa, I rode race horses and just off the track horses. All of them were trained that if you shortened the reins and they felt felt pressure on the bit it meant go fast. If you wanted them to walk or stand you had to give them a loose rein. I'm wondering if your difficulty with getting her to stand quietly could be because she is getting a mixed message and based on her racing experience thinks you are asking her to go.

Pls Never Walk between the wall and the horse. Especially when you don’t know the horse really well. Wenn the horse jump away because it sees something scary then you are going to be the Sandwich. No so nice I promise 😊

It would be kindest to ride her bitless. Bitless is the future, so the let the future start now. We have to stop dominating horses and causing pain. How would humans like to have a metal bit in their mouths and being pulled around? Why use the old, archaic ways when there is a better way?

Well Done!!!! 😊 I think hacking to your first few shows locally is the best strategy for an ex racehorse - the hack takes the edge off them, and my ex racehorses always thought they were going racing when I loaded them up to go somewhere, they'd come off the trailer totally wired. By hacking over, you are gently introducing her to her new job and environment. Brilliant job. X

I am trying to learn from you, riding my ottb on trails for months now, but need to lower his head too. How do you start workin on that? My standie already know how to lower and I squeeze and make contact and he goes, how do you start to learn them that/

I have watched all of the videos with you and her, and she is really doing great. She is a really nice mover, and you are so good with her. What is BE? Badminton? I can't wait to see a video of you and her competing in an eventing competition.

I have 2 ex race horses and Im still with ground work and build trust with them ! We should be honest ex race horses are totally different than horses not from a track but they are worth all the work

Maybe lounging her a bit before hacking to take the edge off and establish communication. My former horse (race horse) had had a previous non-racomg owner so he was pretty mello, but he still liked being in front of the other horses on a trail ride and sometimes would prance all the way home. I know the shying move you are describing ... not sure how to sit that other than to be very relaxed and go with her. I liked that you rode her around in the arena for awhile after returning.. This may teach her that if she acts up, that will be her reward. Good strategy. Take care.

Thoroughbreds are hot blooded; it's in their breeding. They are very sensituve and will shy. Racehorses have little education. Basically barn to track, track to barn. I don't know if there is any reall discipline; barn to track. I would not ride this mare on asphalt fot now, in case she shies.

I used to ride an Arab race horse, she was taught to ride with very loose reins, unless she was expecting to gallop, so then a contact was taken. I’m guessing your mare didn’t like the ‘contact’ on the reins when you were leading her round

From what i saw in this video she seemed to be pretty oblivious to you being on her back and way too interested in what was out there that might get her. Her ears were forward the entire time until you arrived back at the stable where she felt more comfortable. I would spend a lot of time earning her trust and desensitizing her before taking her back out on a road. Alot more groundwork so there's less chance of getting hurt. Id be terrified to hack out the way she is

Your so good with her. I had two lovely ponies when I was younger but wouldn't have had the confidence to ride her as she's a little out of my league. In cars I'd be a mini not a Porsche (?)

Beautiful horse and admire your determination to have a confident hack. Recommend watching Steve Young horse trainer videos. He shows how to teach the horse to respect & gain confidence in you, going bacķ to the basics of ground work with horse standing still while rider mounts and only walk away when asked. Good luck!

thx 4 sharing the ride, so enjoyed it since I am just starting to retrain a rescue OTTB that has huge trust issues, so getting to just touch his hind end without him flinching is a goal now. I rode him inside an area for the test ride and he was very green, just off the track - I do not have an inside area and yep, my balance aint what it was back in the day LOL, so we are taking it slower. blessings n keep riding!!!
