Beekeeping and a whole lot of other shenanigans.
Hello everyone. Pappy Richard here. Thanks for joining me.
My oldest grandson, Beau started calling my Pappy Richard at a young age. I wanted him to call me “Grandfather” but he wasn’t having anything to do with that. Now my entire family and many of my friends and coworkers call me Pappy Richard or PR for short.
I live in Central Pennsylvania with my wife, Heidi. We’ve been married for 39 years. We have 4 grown daughters and 6 grandchildren.
I Love the outdoors. I keep honey bees and chickens. I make maple syrup in the winter and garden in the spring and summer.
I like to be self-sufficient so I often find myself fixing or building something.
Join me here for a look at all my adventures; some funny, some serious, some informative. ALL enjoyable. I promise to keep it family friendly.

The Outdoor Bolig’s join Pappy Richard in tapping the maple trees in their yard. Join us them for this fun and informative video. Maple syrup is a syrup made from the sap of maple trees. In cold climates, these trees store starch in their trunks and roots before winter; the starch is then converted to sugar that rises in the sap in late winter and early spring. Maple trees are tapped by drillin...

Honey Harvest Time. Using Escape Boards to remove bees from the supers. #beekeeping #honeybee #honey
มุมมอง 426ปีที่แล้ว
Escape boards provide an easy way to separate bees from their honey. Bee escapes come in dozens of designs although only a few are commonly available from the bee supply houses. All bee escapes work on the same principle: they provide one-way passages so that once the bees leave the super, they can’t find their way back in. Bee escapes are mounted in or on boards known as “clearer boards” or “e...

Great video! Saved me a lot of time. Thank you!
Thanks for the easy fix!
What do they taste like?
We don’t eat them. 🤷♂️
Very good sir.
So my 10 year old LG washer experienced the same symptoms and I opened it up before seeing this super helpful video. And yes, the drain for the bleach was clogged and I ended up pushing the screwdriver right through it to unclog it. Plus there are a couple of rectangular holes in a mini tray underneath the bleach dispenser and I cleaned those as well. You can see them by gently pulling the tub to the side about an inch or so. Pappy, thanks again!!!
Thanks man! Got my truck 6 months ago and wanting to take advantage of the truck being off the ground and doing stuff myself. Really helpful video!
Hi there - I have an LG top load washer. I have water dripping from my detergent tray area after each cycle. How do I fix this?
You’re a braver man than me dealing with those little buggers of nature! Stay safe, Pappy Richard!
I'm just curious how come those other bees don't sting you ? And where did you learn to do all this this is fascinating.
Honey bees sting to defend their hive. When they have swarmed, they no longer have a hive to defend and most swarms are very docile. I still wear at least a veil because they can get a bit irritated when they are messed with.
Learned a bunch by reading books and following several people on TH-cam
@@pappyrichard wow this is cool thank you for sharing this God bless you brother?
Wow this is totally amazing to watch you definitely have a gift ! God bless you my friend
What about if you have water leaking into the washing bin after cycles are done. I can’t leave clothes in there at all cuz it leaks on them
I think with this tree catching swarms I would put a swarm trap at that tree. That would make it easier for you to catch the swarms in it.
Great video....we call that a super swarm...good luck from central Louisiana. 10:04
Hi from Texas. I should be so lucky to have extra boxes.😊
love it brother god is great
Swarm rustler is trash and commander is #1
I'm glad you had an easy fix. Mine is brand new, nothing in the bleach dispenser but still leaks
Well done,
Good vidie, lucky for me first thing I checked was the reservoir and found a small make up pad. Viola. This vidie assured me that was likely the issue..ran cycle before going any further,,,done

I'm going to be checking this out as soon as I get off work. Hoping this is my solution, too!
Why are you watching DIY videos on company time?
@georgerichards3059 , because I can. It's on my personal device and I listen to all sorts of things while I work. Most of us in my dept do as we don't have any phone duties and we have plenty of time. If nothing else have you ever heard of a little something called a lunch break? Trust me, I'm not stealing from my company but I'm sure they'd be grateful to know your concern.
Do you have a set of plans?
I don’t have a set of plans but the dimensions are in the description below the video.
Mine way clear but an easy thing to check now that I know. Thanks
😂
Howdy Pappy! Did you ever check out any Layens hives?
Hey there. No. Never had any Layens hives.
Thank u
Could you give your approximate location and the date this took place? Thanks much, enjoyed your well done video!
I am in central Pennsylvania and this was in mid May of 2023.
Yay! And the one you gave to me also survived!
That’s awesome!
Yea! Thank you. Exactly what I needed.
Do they feed their babies or mates? I can’t figure out the relationship of my cardinals. Last year the male was feeding a female, but now even though they’re seen together, he’s usually chasing her from the food.
Yes males feed females when it's time. They are definitely not kissing, I think the title was made for fun.
So sweet. I love cardinals.❤
I have a pair of cardinals in my yard that do the same thing. It is so beautiful to see how they love and look after eachother. ❤
How much sap u leave in the pan after you drain off, so not to burn up your pan
If we are not finished boiling for the season, I will leave around 1 1/2 - 2 inches in the pan and cover it as long as the outside temperatures will remain cold enough so the remaining sap in the pan won’t spoil, 45 degrees and below seems to be good. If we are finished for the year, I will boil the last batch down to around 1 inch but no lower than 1/2 inch and then remove the entire pan from the arch and drain it so it won’t scorch.

NIce Work .... I LOVE BEE 😍😍😍 ... I have one colony 😊😊😊
Nice looking bees. Good luck going into spring. I'm guessing you are in PA.
Thank you! Yes, I am in Northumberland County PA.
Omg! Wish I had seen this two weeks ago. Like you, we tore everything apart, replaced hoses, etc., and this is all it was the whole time!
Great video. Once you draw off, how do you keep your pan from scorching with nothing in it?
Yeah. That’s always an issue. We remove the pan from the arch to draw the last bit off and then fill it with water until we are ready to boil again.
Thanks. This worked for me!
Thanks for the mention! Great video!
Thanks.
How did you store your syrup "nearup" after drawing from the evaporator before finishing it off a couple days later? Did you put the pot in the fridge? Keep it out until you were ready to finish the process?
Yes, I stored the pot in the fridge until I was ready to finish it.
Thanks for tagging me in your video! It was great visiting with you two! :)
Fun times and great expo!!
