Mom, Dad and Bro at Bamburi Beach, Mombasa, Kenya, sometime in March 1974
Holiday by the Indian Ocean. This is Bamburi Beach in Mombasa where our family usually spent a couple of days at a time. It was a 600 kilometre travel from Naivasha, but we absolutely loved the place. There were nine chalets which could be rented, and we always took one of the three front ones. Mom usually bought fresh fish directly from the fishermen who just came back from the sea with their catch...

Mom driving in Kenya from Naivasha to Nairobi and back sometime Spring 1974
มุมมอง 1.3K2 ปีที่แล้ว
Mom drove our Ford Cortina 1600 L station wagon, which car was a unique sight in those days in East Africa. I don't remember ever seeing another similar car, maybe only saloon versions, but at least not a white station wagon. Apart from the numerous Land Rovers and Japanese cars, the norm was the Peugeot 404 station wagon and 404 pickup, and even more likely the 504 station wagon. Dad drove the...
Mom feeding baboon with biscuits by the road from Nairobi to Mombasa, Kenya, March 1974
มุมมอง 1002 ปีที่แล้ว
Real wildlife in East Africa! Mom and Dad popped down to Mombasa with my little brother for a couple of days of vacation on the Indian Ocean beach, while we were in Greensteds boarding school near Nakuru with my sister. Somewhere along the way, possibly near the Tsavo National Park, baboons and elephants always came out close to the road, and the baboons never missed the opportunity to beg some...

Mom driving in downtown Baghdad, Iraq, May, 1973
มุมมอง 5732 ปีที่แล้ว
After our friends found out that my Mother was driving almost every day, they told us that we should know that women weren't allowed to drive a car in Iraq and we could get into trouble. But because we didn't know anything about this at first, therefore my Mother drove. Mom never had any problem with this, in fact the local men were amazed by this brave European woman. Its seems though that act...

Mom easing along the driveway in the brand new VW Beetle 1200, Baghdad, Iraq, 1973
มุมมอง 2812 ปีที่แล้ว
And also a first drive with the brand new driver's license... Mom and Dad traveled down from Baghdad to Kuwait by train to buy the car. Due to their meager budget at the time, they had only two options, the Renault 4 or the VW Beetle. Mom decided that the Renault's interior was unbearably bleak, and they told the Renault salesman that they were sorry, but they would rather buy the Volkswagen in...
Formula 1 Austrian Grand Prix 1978 Österreichring Zeltweg
มุมมอง 8242 ปีที่แล้ว
Unfortunately it was a rainy day on the "XVI Großer Preis von Österreich", and we could only see a small portion of the track. What was shocking and unforgetable though, was the incredibly loud and offending sound of the engines as the cars sped past us only a few metres away. Nearly everybody around us, like ourselves, were rooting for Niki Lauda, but eventually he had to retire, and the race ...
Driving Lego cars in Legoland, Denmark, 1978

Driving with my younger brother around Legoland, Denmark in these "giant" Lego cars, in the summer of 1978. To our sister's utmost sorrow she was overage for this fantastic game, so she could only watch us having a great time.
Iran Road Trip 1973 - 3000 kilometers with a Volkswagen Beetle 1200
มุมมอง 3724 ปีที่แล้ว
Family road trip from Baghdad, Iraq to Iran, across the dry plains of Persia and the Alborz Mountains to the Caspian Sea, then back to Baghdad in the summer of 1973. Two adults, three kids (3, 7, 12 years old), one Volkswagen Beetle, approx. 3000 kilometers, scorching heat, NO climate control, and NO complaining along the way. Try to beat that in 2024... ;)
Mom bargaining fiercly for Persian copper handicraft in Isfahan, Iran, August 1973
มุมมอง 2684 ปีที่แล้ว
Mom's persistence was astonishing, since the "Isfahan bargaining" actually took place for one and a half hours, but it was successful for both seller and buyer, because we ended up with a carloadful of authentic Persian (Iranian) copper plates and other items of artisanship. Everybody was exhausted after the event...
Caspian Sea Beach July 1973 - Family Holiday, Iran (Persia)

Well deserved (and enjoyed) bathing in the Caspian Sea (or Lake), which was the end destination of our Family Holiday Road Trip - approx. 3000 kilometers altogether and all together through the scorching Persian Desert (without climate controll of course in the VW Beetle 1200) - from Baghdad, Iraq to Iran, sometime in July, 1973.

Alaaaah izi ndizo videos we need to see more hahaha 🤣🤣🤣 hahah where did you get that Kikuyu track? KPS was the latest number plate that year?
Team #capturedoncamerake is in the building!

I was also in grade two when we arrived in Kenya in '74 :)
so amazing you still have the video tapes today!
They were Super 8 films without soundtrack. They were digitized to mpeg file a few years ago. Unfortunately the Kenya films are in quite a bad shape, I think they got moisture during the decades...
good old days😍😍
Yes, at least from this distance they look great. But for us children everything was an interesting new experience.
Wow fabulous
Thank you!
This is amazing and beautiful
Thanks, wish it was better quality.
That Kikuyu music though... 🔥🔥🔥
:)
The music is on another level!
Which area in Nairobi is that with marrum roads?
Sorry, I can't answer that, I was a child at that time, and I can no longer ask anybody...
It is not true that women could not drive in Iraq in the 1970s. Iraq was the most secular and progressive Arab country in the 1970s. I know it makes you feel good to think you Europeans were so amazing, but you weren't. Nice historical video though.
Was just about to say the same. Women were allowed to drive but it may have been not as common.
Ok! Sorry if this remark offended you, you must be right, so I corrected the text in the video description.
