@@TangibleReads thank you and yes it is 🩷
Congrats on your baby!!! My youngest turns 2 in a couple of weeks. :D
@@Kristy.Reads.2024 thank you! happy early birthday to the little one 🩷 #mommygang
Ugh! I had a comment all written out but then lost it. Basically it said, you are my people. I do not get on booktube to see super edited videos. They are often very nice & sometimes entertaining but I'm interested in hearing people's views of reading, not 20 mins of montage of reading in different places. LOL I'm not going to make those kind & have no expectations of ever making any kind of real money here, just hopefully a few like-minded book nerd friends. :)
@@Kristy.Reads.2024 aww thank you so much Kristy! I really appreciate your kind words and for taking the time to watch my video. I will check out your channel as well
@@literarylayer I just started it. I just filmed two videos today so I have to do some quick chopping up of it since little girl decided to demand I fix the iPad twice. LOL
I need to read this book. Thank you for bringing it to our attention. William T. Vollmann has a two-volume set called Carbon Ideologies-Volume 1, No Immediate Danger; Volume 2, No Good Alternative-that struggles with precisely what you communicate in this video. He strives to understand the causes of climate change as best he can, and then he reaches a similarly horrifying conclusion: the math for how to deal with it doesn't add up, and many solutions come at a great cost to massive amounts of people throughout the world. It's not a book that connects to the Congo; instead it's another road that leads to the same position you express here, one that leaves the author himself quite forlorn and fatalistic (it's written as a letter to future generations explaining why we did not solve the problem).
@@ToReadersItMayConcern I’ve never heard of Carbon Idealogies but I will check them out. Thanks for sharing them with me. I hope that you get a chance to read Cobalt Red. I’m still feeling the aftereffects of it.

As a collector of books, I have no intention of reading all of them. I do read, but every time I get a new batch, I put aside one to read. I am developing a library. With my collection of over thousands of books, I could never read them all even if I wanted to.
Do you collect to sell them or is it just something you personally enjoy?
@@literarylayer Both. I started collecting books by and about African Americans and when I came across a book that I already had, I gave them to my daughter. Well, she had enough so I started selling at local flea markets.
We are on this journey together 🫡 I’m doing the exact same thing atm

Mr Mercedes has some pretty graphic descriptions, just as a warning. It's the first book in a trilogy and is also linked to Holly Gibney series. I really enjoyed it and I can't wait to see what you think of it 😊
@@LizsReadingCorner- thanks for the heads up. I’ll need to check the content warnings before starting it. Some things I can handle like blood and a little violence. Others, not so much
This is a great list! And thanks for the tag, I’m definitely going to do this for my next video! Also I love Zora Neale Hurston and I have not been able to find her books apart from Their Eyes… at my favourite bookstore. I may need to just special order them because her writing style is just wonderful! Also, Blood at the Root is a ton of fun!
@@Mister_Sosotris thank you and you’re welcome! I love your channel and I’m sure that you’ll have a great list as well
I just finished reading James, and as someone who never read the original, I definitely think it stands well on its own. I had debated about reading Huckleberry first, but my requested library copy of James came in before I had the chance. I love how intelligent James was depicted in the book - it was a great read and I’ll be thinking about it for a long time. Definitely want to read more of Percival Everett.
I agree, it definitely stands well on its own. This was my first time reading Everett. Many say that his book “The Trees” is another good one.
The "Personal Librarian" is a true story. Historical Fiction.
I didn’t know that. I love historical fiction. That makes me even more interested in it.
Great buys!! I LOVE Cloud Cuckoo Land, an amazing book that should have won him the Pulitzer Prize again! The opening of If on a Winter's Night was amazing but then the book lost me. I recently hauled Passage to India as well. Fun stuff! Happy reading!
Yes! They had a good selection available. Wondering if I heard you talking about Cloud Cuckoo Land on your channel, probably! This is my first Calvino. Hope I don’t have the same experience 😕
Just a suggestion, when you like a cover on a book, give the artist recognition.
Thanks for the suggestion. I never thought of doing that but will try to include it next time. I’m sure the artists don’t get as much credit as they deserve
One of the interesting articles in "The Black Book" is Alexander Dumas stating that he wanted to come to the United States but he feared he would be captured and held as a slave.
Yes, that one stuck out to me as well. Crazy how he was already loved and respected but just by changing location he’d be treated as property
11/22/63 is a good book, much better than the adaptation imo. This is a good variety of books from different genres, love it 🙂 Thanks for another great video 😊
Thank you so much! I haven’t seen the adaptation but I’m glad to hear that the book is better 🙂
So great! I love the range of books people have been selecting. The Dictionary of Obscure Sorrows sounds especially beautiful! Thank you for including such essential history in the second half, and you've introduced me to a work of Toni Morrison's that I hadn't heard of before. Thank you!
Thank you! The Dictionary of Obscure Sorrows is wonderful and I think you’d enjoy it. For some reason I keep forgetting that I have Recitatif on my shelf but recording this video has me want to get to it sooner than later.
11/22/63 is so interesting! Very complex with details that were really well thought out. I switched back and forth between physical and audio when I read it, which helped me get through it a little faster.
@@jaynehunter-ar planning on starting it this fall. I should’ve read Carrie that way so that I can see the news articles. Only listened on audio
Love this!!! ❤
I'm so glad to hear your thoughts about this. I remembered absolutely nothing about Huckleberry Finn from reading it as a kid, so I read it recently to have the story fresh in my mind. I think I've had enough of a break in between and I'll probably start James later this week. Great video!
Thank you! Hope you enjoy it
I have read quite a few of those. Great answers. Yes. I will do the tag. Thanks for tagging me.
No problem!
Great answers thanks for the Tag
No problem!
Cool video, and I agree. 😊
Love it!
Yes same❤!
Oh my goodness, you've got me really wanting to read this book!
I really enjoyed it 🙂 Some people didn’t like her style of writing though
I haven't read either of these, I'll be adding them to my tbr now that you've piqued my interest 🙂 I can relate to reading sequels or a series too close together, it can become too much especially if you're not liking or not interested in some of the characters.
@@LizsReadingCorner- I can’t say that I’d recommend Huck Finn. It’s very racist but I guess that’s to be expected during that time period with the story he was trying to tell. There were portions of it that were good though. Depends on what you’re comfortable with. James was definitely worth the read and I would’ve preferred to hear more about him in the book.
@@literarylayer yeah I think it's a prominent problem with most stories that I've read from that time period, there's a lot of racism in them unfortunately 😒I'll still add both so I can see what you're talking about 🙂
Looking forward to hearing what you think about them
I hate ignorant portrayal of enslaved blacks. I can understand dumbing down language for protection. May need to checkout James. Percival Everett knows how to pin a good story.
I can’t stand it either. This was my first Percival Everett. Need to check out more from him.
@@literarylayer I read The Trees. Really good
@@TangibleReads I keep hearing about that one. That will likely be what I read next from him
Yayy you did the tag! I feel the same way with Les Miserables! A few of the books you mentioned I had never heard of but they look amazing! I also featured House of Leaves and The Tale of Genji in my version of this video. Great answers to the tag! 😊
