Barnwood was popular in the early 1970s and I thought it was hideous. I can't believe that trend has come back, just as hideous and now probably with fake barnwood. So that would be my top hate, aesthetics-wise. Practicality-wise, up here in canada you need more than a foyer, you need a vestibule with a door. Otherwise you get a blast of arctic air anytime someone enters or leaves the house. Unpleasant and uneconomical. From the point of view of pleasant living, don't you _dare_ touch my dining room. I want it to have doors too. If it doesn't get used for dining, it can be used as a library for book nuts like me, or as a den, an office, whatever. But a gigantic NO to open space. Call them what they really are, living rooms with a kitchen plonked into them. There are cooking smells everywhere, zero privacy, noise noise noise and more noise... And the really big ones are as cosy as airplane hangars. I hate open space to bits. Otherwise, I agree with just about everything, including black kitchens.

Agree a wall a foyer something before the living area, open floor plans idk, I agree eat in sort of kitchen, compartmentalization can be good (my houser built in 1920 love it), agree unfinished at windows and walls is just cheaping out. I love garages so does not bother me. I also like the rustic beat up, industrial mix look. Good video, we all have opinions and you present well.

As a retired real estate agent, I've seen everything thing that you mention. And agree with everything you point out. Besides, trends only last for a while, then fade away. Leaving an outdated mess that won't stand the test of time.

Thank you!!! I’ve been saying for years about the “garage” house, and I’m not even a designer of any kind. Why have a big beautiful house if all you can see is a garage door?!?

I hate open concept kitchen/dining/living spaces. All the cooking smells soak into your upholstered furniture. Your guests have to eat looking at all the dirty pots and pans. And if you have catering help, they have no place to work that's separate from the guests. Give me a kitchen with a door and a sit down dining room so my guests aren't forced to hang out in the kitchen.

I use my jetted tub several times a week. I have a serious pain disorder and it's my hydrotherapy pool. I made sure to put in a big enough water heater, and I've never had a problem with the tub. Our housecleaner cleans it. I can't imagine doing without it.

Hate “open concept”. I enjoy cooking, thus actually use the kitchen. It is a workspace, will always have some clutter, like a workshop or a sewing room. Worst thing ever are the L shaped kitchens with an island containing the wash sink. Wash items are on display and counter space is restricted when laying out baking sheets, etc. Refrigerators need to be near the sink not across the room. Cabinets where dishware are stored need to be very close to the dishwasher. Open shelves in the kitchen are ridiculous. Do people take down all those dishes or appliances or whatever every week to dust the shelves? It has been great reading the comments, glad so many people do not like all the builder homes built in the last several years. I considered moving, but the dozens of houses I looked at were unbearable: unlivable kitchens as I described, walk-in closets in the bathroom, everything grey…Painting the entire interior is costly; redoing the grey floors and the kitchen layout are prohibitive. Whether the houses were newish or renovated, I would have required an additional 50% of the cost to renovate.

I would have said Black and dark gray color. I am tired of it. I do not mind a very light hue gray to lighten up a room with some depth but I do not want medium or dark and moody. OH the red wall or orange wall too. I don't want bold. I want quiet. Chandeliers. Too hard to clean. Carpet. Hate it. Popcorn ceilings. High ceilings. I better stop.

I just had a big party for my daughter’s wedding shower. Our house is older. Not huge. But we have a separate kitchen and dining room. And while we were doing last min things in the kitchen, no guest was in there walking around or even really seeing or paying attention to what we were doing. My dining table was set as a buffet, with everything layed out on beautiful bowls and plates, etc. we have a beautiful sized dining room that’s actually bigger than our small kitchen. Enough room to move around the table. With a FPl on one wall, sliding doors to deck on another wall, and windows on 3rd wall. Opening on the other wall. It’s a very old fashioned house with a mix of design choices, I feel are cozy. I was so surprised at the amount of people that told me how much they loved our house. I think it is unique especially in this culture where everything is trendy or all the same square box living of dull colorless blahh. The colors play off each other well, in the rooms. But you can have each room have its own look without the open floor plan all looking the same. I will always choose charming over bigger.

Disagree with the black cabinets one, if it's done well and fits the style of the home overall, I think it looks really good. It has to match though, randomly throwing in black cabinets without taking into account the rest of the style is bad.

I like having a little area right where you enter where you can sit, take off your shoes/put on slippers, and hang up your coats and stuff. Like a small mud room before you enter the house.

I agree on most of it. I like dining rooms. Do I use mine alot? no, but I still want one. I don't mind a partially open floor plan but I don't like just one big open room. I guess I like the traditional. I love trim because it adds so much more character to the home.

Jetted tubs and Garage houses are both ugly. On the other hand, I LOVE my separate dining room, because I rather eat and relax in a beautiful space, not the kitchen work space. Even the most beautiful kitchen is still for the hired (or unhired) help.

To me !!! There should be a trend in building ,detached two story vaulted garages, 3 bays or more.. preferably... maybe not finishing the top floor now because of the cost !!... but in the future when your property is paid for !!... and then it becomes..rental property. To help offset the raising cost of homeownership!!

You hit all the boxes as far as I'm concerned. Particularity when it comes to black cabinets, walls, window trim and well, just about anything black in the home. For one thing, it's trendy so in a few years (if not right now) it won't be a style that anyone wants and the owner will be spending boo-koo bucks to replace it, or paint it, or just throw out the furniture. Give me classic, timeless, understated elegance any day. Barn doors. OMG. Lose them! And jetted tubs? Most would be condemned by the health department if they were inspected. Just disgusting little germ pools. Thanks for the video. You didn't miss a thing.

Semi-open concept is great, where living room opens to dining/dinette, which, in turn, opens to kitchen. Kitchen is not immediately visible from the living room, but it still feels spacious. No doored-off kitchen for me. Separate dining rooms are wonderful as a perk if they can function as multipurpose areas when not used for family/holiday/guest dinners. Homework, sewing, crafting, meeting, or library spaces combine well in formal dining areas.
