The VdV Loady is a great compact Cargobike
NEW Gen.5 Bosch Performance CX, Enviolo Automatiq and a wide array of colours and configurations. This is the Velo de Ville Loady. It starts at just below 4.000€ and has a lot of potential to become one of the best compact long tail cargobikes out there. But it's not quite there yet...

€6,000 😂
How did I miss the English version of your awesome channel?!
It’s still in its infant phase 🫣😃
Wie würdest Du zwischen dem Cube und dem Btwin r500e V2 entscheiden?? Wieder sehr informatives Video, schaue mir gerade eins nach dem anderem an, da ich vor der Entscheidung stehe, welches Longteil zu leasen.. Besten Dank!
How was the length of the rear area, our boys need some knee room!
Overall it is about 70cm, between the front rail and backrest about 60cm. I think, up to a height of about 1.2-1.3m it shouldn’t be a problem for two kids to sit behind each other.
You are, without a doubt, the best cargo bike channel I know of. Your insights are much appreciated!
Thank you!
Love the locking feature on the kick stand. I think these guys nailed it.
I have a Tern HSD (gen I) that had speed wobble problems. Turned out that the culprit was the headset that was just a tinny bit loose. My mechanic noticed that and tightened it, and it never came back again.
I tried to tighten it but it didn’t do the trick. That said, every teen bike I reviewed had this issue as well more or less, depending on the load distribution.
I didn't know that velo de ville had all those options and as nice of a configurator to show them off. I think I will have a look at their website just to play around with that.
Yes, this is real fun! I especially like the vibrant colours. Such a shame most manufacturers go with the safe bet, black or white…
This is awesome. Thanks for the in-detail video. Do you know if it's possible to add a Maxi-Cosi adapter?
Maybe you could install one by Steco. These are mounted on the floor of the box. But they take up a lot of space. Maybe it works if the front bench is removed.
@@thecargobikechannel That might be an option. Thanks for replying so quickly. Cheers,
Almost exactly what I'm looking for, except if i did pay this for a bike i would need to hire private security when i leave it out of my sight in public 😂
Well, the advantage is, that it doesn’t look like an expensive bike at first glance. Just when you really get into the details and the story. So I think you’ll be fine ;)
@thecargobikechannel to me seeing a belt drive makes it look expensive. Seeing it's motorised would make it look expensive to a bike thief, and fancy indicators and cargo racks attract attention of bike thieves too.
Those are probably the best bike turn signals I've seen so far. Too bad they're 200 Euros! The bike is crazy expensive, too.
Yeah. We need an open source option that can be purchased as a kit or something.
Thanks for this short but on point review. Very interesting details of the e-shifting issues…looking forward to hear about a solution for that. I guess the Rohloff hub has its internal planetary changing point only between 7th and 8th gear, right?
I love the craftsmanship of this. And the signal lights are really great. Are those lights third party? Can you just buy the lights? Found it: Busch + Müller TURNTEC. Doesn’t look available in US.
I love the bike. It's simple, practical and gorgeous. But the prices!!!! That's why we need the equivalent of a Volkswagen or Toyota (or BYD if you are ok with a Chinese ride) 0in e-bikes to churn out millions of these in various models and variations at half the price and sell multiple times more with a solid backup in accessible repairable and replaceable parts and components. This is basically a small garage manufacturer having to charge ridiculous prices just to make a decent income for a small number of staff plus an overall company profit. Even companies like R&M and Cube are still relatively small businesses. I paid €3.5k last year for an all round workhorse Cube e-bike so I've got skin in the game. And that's at the cheaper end of the European manufacturer market. I also bought a second hand car the previous year for the same price which should be good for10k km per year for several more years at least. Somebody somewhere really needs to do a Henry Ford and rationalise mass manufacturing, quality and reasonable pricing. We are being screwed. That bike is lovely but it's an expensive artisan product with an overpriced Bosch motor.
Yeah, this isn’t mass produced. It’s hand built. Same problem with airplanes. The cost of tooling and automation is steep. So unless the demand for the bike is there you won’t hit the ROI for the factory.
Ace!
Is it possible to take out the battery and charge it separately?
Yes, you just have to dive into the box and under the bench to unlock the battery which can be cumbersome.
@thecargobikechannel thanks!
This is a really great looking offering. I like how you show the interesting features. Excellent review. How do you think this stacks up to the Super Mighty?
The Super Mighty is way smaller and less comfortable for the kids. However at this pricepoint it’ll be still an easy recommendation. I’ll hopefully review it soon, so stay tuned :)
The kickstand is a shame. After riding a cargo bike for a while I’ve come to realize how important a good kickstand is.
Yes, it’s often overlooked!
Gonna try it tomorrow with my cube longtail - Édit: works well on the Bosch cargo line too!
Honest review
This looks like a very nice bike!!!
The suspension and the ability to extend and adjust angle of the hitch sell it for me. But the price will be the barrier for most people. Even those with disposable income will pause at an expenditure of 1000.00 for a "bike accessory". Even if you are committed to bike as primary mode of transportation. That being said, it is flawless in the execution of utility design. Only the addition of fenders could make it improved in my opinion.
My R &M Carrie would benefit from this.
Definitely!
Seems like a nice feature but the max force you’re going to get is 85Nm, right? I always just stand on the pedals in a situation like this, which is probably 100Nm or more. So isn’t it just easier to stand on the pedals instead of messing with button holds and screen messages?
You get the instand motor torque plus your own torque, which makes all the difference, especially with the Performance Line Motors.
Great video. Can a carseat for the baby fit in the box?
I think it would fit, but you would have to figure something out to fixate it in the box.
I realised I missed some vital information: The bike weighs about 60kg in this specification and has a maximum total weight of 220kg. This is all pretty much standard. Price wise it starts from ~5.200€ and my review sample costs just shy of 8.000€. Again, not cheap, but also not excessively expensive.
Is it enough you ponder? If you mentioned the price, I missed it. I'm guessing with this, Bergemont are aiming to give an essential functional cargo bike that will do everything you want but at a cheaper price than an R&M or an Urban Arrow? R&M are ridiculously overpriced for what you get anyway. This is fine if it is actually cheaper and you are getting value for your money. Everything that's missing in reality costs relatively little to have been already pre fitted by the manufacturer. It looks great. What is the bikes total weight and what is it's total weight carrying capacity excluding the bikes own weight?
Carrie taking notes from Muli, which is not a bad thing. Long John designs aren't just fun to ride and more practical at hauling stuff when you hadn't planned for it, they're also a rolling advertisement that "THIS IS A UTILITY BIKE, AND PEOPLE CAN USE BIKES FOR THEIR TRANSPORTATION." If a Long John is the Sport Utility Vehicle of bikes, then the compact Long John is the hatchback or station wagon. I hope it proves to be a successful model.
The bike looks heavy, but the website plays a trick and only discloses the weight of the rear portion (~31 kg/68 lbs. in heaviest version). They don't disclose the weight of the front portion, or even show the front wheel :) It looks like they're trying to keep the price down by using a rigid front fork, relying on the balloon tires. Handy owners might upgrade this part themselves with a Suntour Mobie A32 later. They were impossible to source during COVID, but now they're available and even discounted. I suppose the geometry/frame pitch may change ever so slightly as the suspension fork needs room to compress As always Tilman, thank you for the comprehensive coverage of cargo bikes and for doing it now in English language. I must admit, trying to read English translation of your German content wasn't as pleasant of an experience. Thanks to you and Leah for the great work you do, showing there is a massive world of choice out there for people to choose the bike and leave the car.
Thanks for your kind words!
Nice! Thank you for the great video!
A great design.
Felt like a comprehensive review, balancing fulsome praise with a smaller list of candid dislikes. Really helpful.

I have Cube Longtail Hybrid 725, enviolo/belt version, ordered online from NL. My location is Belgium, for every maintenance or service I need to go to Rotterdam with the bike, nobody from local stores/services will touch the bike. I waited 7 months for a new rim and fenders to be delivered by Cube in order to rebuild rear wheel. So right now I will sell the bike with more than 60% loss and I will buy another one locally so I can use local service...
Im a bike mechanic. Enviolo hubs are something alot of shops avoid. Maybee get the shimano xt version.
Service proximity is an issue on any of these e-bikes. I’m located in the US and ordered my Packster from a shop 160km from me. (But this is typical in the US, our states are bigger than most countries.) Until there’s enough maintenance volume to support a local shop that’s how it’s going to be. Parts are also an issue, the more custom the more difficult they are to get.
At €1200 it is perhaps better to put that towards a 2-wheeled cargo bike.
I don’t think it would last long. Being all the spring cation and plastic ball hitch. Being the thing is light aluminum and plastic. How long would it last. And most places where I live do not let you conceal any item you not paid for yet. No bag is allowed in store to pack as you go. It’s called concealing the goods.
Great rreview
Great Review, Some great insights to the practicalities of real world use of the bike. I have the honour of selling R&M bikes to customers and have really enjoyed riding the Vario version. I love how nimble it is and how comfortable the ride is in the city. I see that having the bike for a longer period of time helps to learn the in and outs. Not having children myself, your review helps me consider the logistics of carrying children and the accessories involved better. Again Thank you for sharing some great info that I can share, and for pointing out things I had not considered or had not noticed. The steering to the left being one of them. cheers!

It's great to see how cargo bikes are evolving into real utility vehicles. Especially for people like plumbers or electricians to be able to move with their tools anywhere in a city center. And for traveling with camping gear, although I would prefer bigger wheels for off road traveling. But for sure an interesting bike.
I bought a thule kid's trailer on craigslist for fifty bucks and removed the top.
A very cool looking and interesting trailer. In particular the suspension wheel system, and the carrying capacity too. However, in my opinion there's one important function missing: the ability to fit a hydraulic brake system connected to the bike's rear wheel brake. Consider towing an (up to) 89 kg trailer (80+9 kg trailer weight) and braking that plus bike and rider on two wheels only. For added safety I miss someone inventing an easy-fit trailer brake system that easily couples to the bikes hydraulic brake system and operates from the bike's rear brake lever.
You had me at those capabilities, especially at 80kg total weight limit until the price. Now I'm happy with what I bought and might review it soon.
Very cool. Would love one of those for camping with my Packster.
