Purpose or Play: What Really Drives Our Photography?
I often ask myself, "Why do I photograph"?
What drives me to endure harsh weather, carry heavy equipment all day, and do anything for that perfect shot? Why am I so captivated by the addictive sound of shutter clicks?
Recently, I had the opportunity to document the final days of Hong Kong's Tai Hang Sai Estate. As I walked through its corridors and blocks on the brink of demolition, I was struck by the vivid culture, history, and marks left behind. In moments like these, I want to capture what remains before it vanishes forever. Hong Kong is a fast changing city, sites like the famous “Instagram Pier” at Kennedy Town have disappeared before I could return for more photos, and I would never forget that disappointment that I didn’t have the last chance to capture it.
So, why do we photograph? Is it to look back on what no longer exists, or to preserve the best of our memories? While there’s no fixed formula for a great photo, every frame has a purpose-even if achieved by chance.
Ultimately, photography allows me to capture the essence of a moment. It grounds me in the present, enabling me to fully immerse in and appreciate the experience.

Now, after re-exploring and truly embraci...

Such a beautiful Hong Kong….Love your footage and music
It's so hard to evaluate film stocks on low resolution video.
I love film camera and pictures that comes out film looks amazing. The problem with film is that we have to make sure what you are clicking. I also followed @gabriellieng channel. Thanks for sharing
does your protector ring fit the 35mm nokton classic lens too?
Photography is not about how a camera or a lens looks, it is about how the images looks !
You speak beautifully and have a good spirit in you. Subscribed.
I found this channel because of a Google search that brought me to your website. Thanks for sharing your work and insights. I am now a sub!!!!!!!!!
What was the focal length of your video showing you moving on location?
Great video and blog post on this lens. I have recently bought the 24mm f/3.8 Elmar and totally fallen in love with 24mm. So, I’m very tempted by the 24mm Summilux. 😊 How do you find the size and weight for daily use and travel? Too big and heavy or no problem? Do you use f/1.4-2 a lot or mostly stopped down? Best regards from Copenhagen
Where did you get Lens hood for Rollei 35?
cool video
I am thinking about to get the new 50mm 1.0, I just got the Nikon ZF, I still have the 50mm 1.1 M mount, don't understand why people don't like this lens much, my copy is sharp.
Fancy taking a look? 🔗 bit.ly@trybrevite
Thanks for the lens review. You'll have to try out a proper Nikon S body!! The RF Patches on mine are all way brighter than the ones on Leica bodies. They just need to be cleaned sometimes.
Fancy taking a look? 🔗 bit.ly@trybrevite
Thank you, This is definitely one of the better videos for using a 24mm leica lens!
In my opinion, automatic ISO feature on Leica is plain silly. We are supposed to set the ISO and forget it. Germans in their infinite wisdom love to overengineer everything, starting from cars and ending with cameras. Your pictures taken on film look fantastic. Monochrome Leica simply cannot replicate film stocks such as Fuji Acros or Double-X, Tri-X, or FP4+ for that matter.
Never understood the fuss about Voigtlander glass, they are so bland with generic rendering. The Noctilux f1 runs rings around this.
Nice review
Nice. Where to buy
Great to know! Check out shop.tahusa.co
After fitting the hood to the lens is it perfectly symmetrical ? I’ve noticed third party lens hoods don’t sit evenly on voigtlander lenses sometimes.
Which version do I get do you have a link ?
It’s just like that walled city of Kowloon. Wasn’t able to get there before it was gone.
Another great one A.T. I photograph to freeze and preserve my memories. I am a nurse and I've had patients that as they've aged lose their memory. We tell the family to bring photos to help their loved ones not feel scared, anxious and or alone. The patients may forget where they are and why they are at the hospital but when we talk about a a photo all the illness slips away for a moment and they remember a happier time and they are themselves for a moment. Photos are very important to me.
Thanks for sharing your story. Photography is powerful! 💪🏼
To me, the act or practice of photography demands that we pay attention... [to what and to what end?]... the image is to experience, demonstrate, and suggest or encourage engagement [with what and to what end?]. All subjects are of consequence. Some 'ends' matter, most don't. Lkd&Subd.
It's a nice sentiment Anson. We capture things before they are gone. That certainly includes so many places in HK - a city that changes so quickly. But I think of this especially with people we love - they change, as we all do, with time, and the life stages we capture are too eventually gone. Thanks for sharing your thoughts on capturing pictures of places while we can.
Thanks Linden! I am going to capture some more HK scenes before they disappeared. I will try with medium format slide film and carry my tripod around.
Well done Anson, Nice Rollei you have there. I use a Leofoto G2 gear head for my 2.8 Rollei + the Rollei quick tripod head. I can highly recommend the Rollei Mutar's for extra width or reach, they work amazingly well past F5.6👍
Thank you! I did look at the Mutar before. Maybe I should find one again. Nice I wanna try the leofoto g2 head on my 4x5 camera.
Nice video. I have slide negatives from the 1960s of Kowloon and can imagine it's all been demolished by now
I would love to view them if possible! Kowloon must have looked so gorgeous during that period.
Good thoughts. After years of photographing for clients, I have retired, and now use my cameras for myself. It has taken at least two years to find out how to enjoy photography just for myself. Cheers
It's not easy for someone who turned his passion into a full-time job. Some of my friends who did that told me they don't remember how to take photographs for themselves anymore. Keep going and I hope you continue to enjoy doing that!
Excellent video and superb photographs that you've shown. Thank you for sharing an insightful video with a really meaningful question. It's definitely got me looking through some recent work and asking myself :)
Appreciate your comment. It means a lot to me. Thanks!
Japan is amazing.
ROLLEI'S ROCK ... I am so glad to see this legendary camera out , and being used by photographers ... The square format lends itself to so much ... documenting the present , and preserving those places , moments ... I enjoy doing this myself ... A deeper meaning of Life. Hong Kong is beautiful with neon lights ... 🥰
Gorgeous
Thank you!💎🦘
Great to have your spouse sharing the same passion. I'd say your wife has more unique shots compared to yours. Cheers!
I think so too! I need to make another video with her ;)
Interesting and entertaining, thanks Anson!
Glad you enjoyed it!
Great work Anson. That Dallmeyer reminds me a bit of the world after a little too much wine! But you used it to good effect. Nice to see the Makina back out in action. Thanks the video - some good advice, and some lovely photos as always.
Thanks Linden!
Great overview and sharing what tools you used for the experience!
Thanks for watching!
Stop talking about gear man!! A skill photographer can able to shoot No matter what camera he has in Hands even a Cheaper one. Doesn't have to be Leica damn it!! Show more Vision and photos instead.
I for one enjoyed this video. Thank you Anson. Keep up the good work. For those who don't like it, I guess thats why there are a lot of other video channels you can watch. Nobody is forcing anyone to watch what they don't want to. Can't wait for the next one. Also you made me super interested in the Dallmeyer now.
A.T. I'm so glad you finally got to post another video! Keep it up it was well worth the wait. These image were AMAZING! As always your videos are informative, insightful and so well put together. My son Anson also watched with me as he is now a fan because you share the same name haha. Japan is on of my bucket list places to visit. I would love to surf, take photos, eat good food and take in the scenery there. Youve made me curious about the 28mm.
Thanks, Sherree! Your support means so much to me. Haha, I can already imagine your son using your Leica MP one day! Check out Japan; it's family-friendly and has too much to explore. I saw you have the 35mm Ultron; if you like that lens, the 28mm is similar except it has f/1.5. But with 28mm, I always find it hard to compose - good to challenge ourselves a bit! I am already working on my next video, so the wait will only get shorter and shorter!
The menu metering is the simplest i have ever experiment in 60 years.
No camera is perfect.
They look soft. My 35mm looks sharper. Try a tripod or hold it sturdier
Thanks, that's a good tip; I'll try it next time. Another reason could be that Instagram downgraded the image. I will post a new video soon to see if that looks better to you.
Did you use a promist filter ir is the blooming from the lens?
Yes, I used a Pro-Mist for the video, but I didn't use a Pro-Mist filter on the Nokton images shown in the video. Hope that helps!
@@Tahusaco ah okay, thanks! Nice video!👍
Wondering if you had to pick either the 50 or 35mm lens which would you choose?
It really depends. I think both of them are great especially the 50mm because it appears to be a much better deal than Leica 50APO based on online information and other fellow youtuber’s comparison. I am more a 50mm person so I prefer 50mm more, but size wise I like 35mm more.
@@Tahusaco I watched a few other videos and if your looking strictly at the 35mm version compared to other 35mm offerings it seems this lens wins overall and while leica has a 35mm APO is is incredibly expensive and not for the faint of heart, of course everyone has different styles of shooting and subject matter so as you stated the 50mm might be one's preference, from a quality perspective you don't lose either way.
Love this. I was planning to get the Fuji Natura 24mm but was initially intimidated by the wide lens.
I used to shoot mostly on a 100mm equivalent focal length (m43) Im now on a fuji and i am trying to feel more Comfortable with wider lenses... Its overwhelming for me...
I totally get you. It takes time to adjust the distance and also comes down to where you live and how sensitive people are to the cameras.
I’m doing something similar - switching up from my 28mm focal length of choice to 50mm.
That’s a nice move. 50mm is my fav.
Good video bro.
Appreciate it.
why nwwd to step out for 24mm ?? you phone is already 24mm lens nothing new
Nicely done, and good advice here. I like the rendering and more compact size of the 2.8/24 Elmarit
Thanks for watching! I would love to try it one day.
You're so blessed to have lovely wid=fe to share your journey with Sir , and the photographs were both good , and different. Seeing you out together gives a man alone like me a joy. Love and explore life together !! ♥🇹🇼 🇺🇸
Thanks for your support! :)
