Momentum Worx's background is routed in the exotic car scene, but for the past few years we have been building & selling turbo kits for Caterpillar, Cummins, & Detroit diesel engines. BEST Turbo for 12.7L Detroit Series 60 Diesel Engine
The Detroit Series 60 is NOT a new platform, people have been running these engines and upgrading them for YEARS. I think the problem is that everyone lumps the Detroit 12.7L in with the Detroit 14.0L, but when it comes to turbos, what works on the 14.0L isn't going to work as well on the 12.7L.

The ULTRA Turbo upgrade for Detroit 12.7L engines takes the guess work out of finding the perfect turbo size for your stock or lightly upgraded 12.7L Detroit Series 60 engine.
This turbo takes advantage of a very efficient turbine and tighter exhaust housing to provide quick turbo spool up while having a large compressor wheel to still make tons of boost pressure and CFMs. While many folks want to upgrade to the famous "702" turbo, or BorgWarner 171702, the 12.7L Detroit engines often struggles to spool the 702 because of the larger turbine. The ULTRA turbo gives you a similar sized compressor wheel, mated with a smaller turbine wheel and housing that your Detroit 12.7L can actually light, giving you power right away instead of high EGTS and terrible turbo lag.

What makes the ULTRA different from a K31 or GT42?
The BorgWarner K31 (172732) is a very common replacement for the Garrett GT42, as it consolidates many GT42 turbos into one K31 part number.
While the BorgWarner replacement does feature an upgraded billet wheel, it's only a 71MM inducer, opposed to the larger wheels available previously with the GT42. The K31 is also a much bulkier frame then the GT42 which can be an issue for tighter engine bays or any application with minimal fender/frame rail clearance

You have definitely thought about it, but there was one thing holding you back. How the heck do you mount the low pressure turbo? Well, your question is answered today. The BXS, MXS, and NXS serial numbers are the same GT42 and GT55 turbos, but the SDP actually has a BALL BEARING, GT42 with slightly larger wheels, and BALL BEARING GT55. Not really sure where to ask my questions, so I will try here. I am working on a military CAT 3116. It produces a whopping 290 hp. I am changing my stock turbo to a recommended drop in CAT 10R6402 which is a Borg Warner (BW). The newer turbo supposedly will last longer, since it has water cooling and the original BW did not. What do you think? Also, is there newer turbo in this BW group that should be considered a better swap with similar specs? My goal is only a modest power increase, maybe 30hp. I can turn up the fuel, since it is mechanical.

No special fabrication needed on the outlet side if you use the CAT 75mm straight outlet housing with the 3.750 oulet for the old mechanical engines, just bore the 75mm to 78mm they'll bolt right on

We have been single turbine acerts at our shop. They are dogs stock from my experience. My 05 isx would walk all over the acerts. 6nzs it would run with. Anyhow we use an acert block and rods. 6nz piston and top end. 6nzs timing is advanced so their snappier

VGT turbos are pure garbage. Too many moving parts that can go wrong, which is not cheap.
Those of you modifying to the single turbo BE SURE TO CONTACT AND INVESTIGATE BLAYLOCK TURBOCHARGER, Baxter Springs, Ks. His Switchblade(tm) is absolutely the way to go! Talk to Jim Blaylock directly.
I service 2 KME type 1's - One has the single and the other has the compound. I prefer the single set up just for its simplicity. The firefighters have no idea the difference between the 2. They perform close to identically.

Im looking for this information as well. Did you have to get it reprogrammed?
No. They calibrate them when they put them on the turbo. Removing the actuator, will void the warranty, in most cases.

Dual Turbo MXS Factory 600 🐎 The turbos used to have issues with mounting bolts breaking and the bellows breaking or coming loose. We tried turning it up but it wrecked a liner within 24 hours of being tuned up to 725. The turbos didn't mind either way. Replaced all the liners and tuned it back to 525 to promote engine longevity. Have your tuning done by a reputable outfit. And make sure they have an in house Dyno. The good shops dyno all tuning to make sure it's 100% correct. The place I used didn't and there was a tuning problem they couldn't fix it because no Dyno!!!!

Don't forget volumetric efficiency. Same turbo with a more efficient cam, heads, intake and or exhaust may actually lower boost pressure and increase mass flow.

Yes and No - there are no designated diesel S400 turbos, but there are many different variations of the S400. Many auto applications use the S400 with the smaller turbine wheel, where as majority of HD diesel applications use the 96/88MM turbine when using the S400 platform.

How come when I called earlier this week and said I’m overhauling my 12.7 and looking to do 600-625hp I was told guys like the 171702? No discussion as to maybe better options. Felt like the guy didn’t take me very seriously
600+HP on a 12.7L is not a stock or lightly upgraded motor, so this ULTRA turbo wouldn't be one I would recommend either. I'd agree that the 171702 is likely your best option if its a true 600+WHP Detroit app. If you need help with turbo sizing, email is the best way to get ahold of us: Info@momentumworx.com
You just throw away broken shaft and wheels and block oil line and continue driving naturally aspirated.

DDEC6 is a VGT turbo, this turbo would not be a direct swap
