Decoding the mysteries of video and cinema cameras, from soup to nuts. I'm still working through soup, so there is plenty to come!
Rigging the BMPCC 6K Pro without spending big.
Been a while since I've posted a video, that's a story for another time. In this video, which has its shortcomings but I had to get it done, I look at rigging the BMPCC 6K Pro as inexpensively as possible. I add a cage, an SSD, microphone, follow focus, rails, and V-mount battery. I would have added a cheap matt box, but mine is packed away in one of many boxes ready for moving house. I do describe adding the Smallrig mini follow focus. I have a video on this follow focus at

I also have a video on the V-mount battery and plate here:

Blackmagic 6K Pro - a Review. Part One.
Better late than never. I've had the BlackMagic 6K pro for several years now, having bought it as soon as it was available. It was, and is, a revolutionary camera, providing amazing value for money. A cinema camera in a DSLR style body. The shape was originally devised for single lens reflex film cameras, and though it is no long relevant, it simply won't go away. I'm now taking the time to rev...
The Neewer Optical Snoot and the Ellipsoidal Reflector Spot
Spotlights are an essential in stage lighting. The ERS, or ellipsoidal reflector spotlight, was developed in the 1930s and remains a staple for productions. Often known as the LEKO from the names of Levy and Kook who designed one of the first versions, today the most common implementation is the Source Four. There have been many adaptations of the ERS principle for photography, designed to atta...
Why Are Reflectors Parabolic?
There is a lot of hype about parabolic softboxes these days, but not so much about parabolic reflectors. Why are reflectors parabolic anyway? What is it about the parabolic shape that makes it suitable as a reflector? Are there other shapes that are just as good? I'll take an in depth look into the why's and wherefores of parabolic reflectors. Here is a link to Osram HMI bulb information [damme...
A Review of the Smallrig 85cm Parabolic Softbox
These days parabolic softboxes are all the rage. It is hard to find a softbox that does not claim to be parabolic, in spite of the fact that the configuration of these softboxes misses the point of being parabolic in that the light source is not at the focus of the parabola, and that placing a diffuser at the front negates any shaping that may happen behind it. The great problem with these para...
The Story of Gamma in Photography, Television, and Video - Part 2
The term gamma was introduced to the photography world in 1890 by Hurter and Driffield, as I have described in Part One, The Origin of Gamma. For decades subsequently, gamma meant the slope of the characteristic curve of film and was synonymous with contrast. When television and video came along this changed somewhat. I have attempted to trace the changing meaning of gamma during the developmen...
The Origin of Gamma in Photography Part One
Gamma in photography popularly means contrast. But why is this Greek letter used? Who started using it and when? I spent some time investigating this and came up with the answers. In this video I give the answers to these questions. Neewer Teleprompter: Review of the Neewer X14 Pro
I take a detailed look at my Neewer X14Pro Teleprompter and its operation. I also take a quick look at how you can build your own - the principle of operation is very simple, based on the idea of a one way mirror, and running a script on an iPad.
What is False Colour? I'll take a look at what it is and how it can be used for setting exposure.
Shooting with the Canon C100, and using the Ninja Blade external monitor, I explain false colour and its use to set exposure. I also take a quick look at the Ninja Blade external monitor, which is just as 'obsolete' as the Canon C100. I'll show what the 'false' colours mean for brightness, in the Ninja Blade, in Davinci Resolve, and on the BlackMagic 6K Pro camera. I'll also compare false colou...
What is IRE? What does it have to do with today's technology?
The term IRE is frequently used in video measurement of luminance. But just what does it mean? Is it different from percentage? I examine the meaning of the acronym and the origins of the term. And I ask why a term defined more than 50 years ago for an obsolete technology is being used today. I also take a look at video levels, a confusing term as level ranges for video can be either video leve...
Where does 18% Grey Come From? I answer that question.
18% Grey is used throughout video and photography as a reference for nailing exposure. Not many know where it comes from, or exactly why 18%. I take a brief look at the history of human perception of brightness and answer the question 'Why 18%?' Using the Waveform with an 18% Grey Card for Exposure on the Canon C100
The grey card is commonly used to assist in getting correct exposure in photography and video. In this video I discuss using the 18% grey card together with the wavemform monitor on the Canon C100 to obtain correct exposure. I also examine how extreme backgrounds can cause auto exposure to give incorrect results, and briefly touch on correcting colour balance. The Kodak Grey Card can be obtaine...

The WaveForm Monitor - an introduction to how to interpret it on the Canon C100.
The WaveForm Monitor has long been an essential tool for setting exposure in professional video production. Here I give a basic introduction to the tool and how to interpret it for setting exposure on a Canon C100 cinema camera. This is part of my continuing series of videos explaining the basics of videography.
Exposure on the C100: Part I, Using Zebras, protecting the highlights, and shooting for skintones.
The Canon C100 has an auto exposure uption, but the Push Auto Iris is more useful as we rarely want the aperture to be changing randomly during shooting with its effect on depth of field. Better control can be obtained using the zebra tool, either to maximise the exposure without overexposing any element in the scene, or to set the best exposure for skin tones. As we shall see in a later video,...
