Installing Sportscraft Swivel Seat Adapters in a Sprinter Dec 2004
In this video we show you how we installed Sportscraft Swivel Seat Adapters in our Mercedes Sprinter DIY Camper Van. These help to fully utilize the limited space in a camper van by making the seats dual-purpose: Use them for driving and for living in the van.
And - here's how we improved them with a few quick and easy hacks, making them operate much more smoothly: th-cam.com/video/adXOrBuVy10/w-d-xo.html
This is from a video we originally published on TH-cam in 2019 but we made some minor edits and are replacing that one with this one - hope you enjoy and find this useful!

Yes indeed, stir sticks FTW! Thanks for the suggestion!
One great addition
Yep, we’re happy with it! Thanks for the feedback! 👍
Keep in mind that the thermometer on the door is the temp of the door, NOT inside the oven. Have you tried adding a pizza stone, yet, and covering rhe oven with an insulated cover to even out the heat? I think I will try them soon.
Good to know, thank you. We have not yet tried a pizza stone but we’ve heard from multiple sources that’s a good idea 👍 Thanks for the tips!
Thx man fixed my door like this!!
So cool and glad to hear it - thanks for the feedback!!

Yes, swiveling is the way to go! 👍 Thanks for your feedback!
@@TimAndShannonLTD You're welcome! continue posting your good contents ✌
Try using a clamp or locking pliers (preferably smooth jaw) to pinch the fuel line taking care not to damage it. That will keep the diesel from flowing! I installed the Vevor auto parking heater in my shop last year and am very happy with it. This season, it started doing the shutdown-startup on me and would not reach the normal op temp of 215C on high. I disassembled it to find a bunch of gunk in it. Using Brakleen, I cleaned it all up and reassembled it. Still it didn't work right. In a moment of desperation for a diagnosis, I pointed my air compressor nozzle into the intake while the heater was running to give it a little "extra" dose of air to see if it would make a difference in combustion. My air nozzle had other ideas. One quick full-blast of air into the intake sent soot flying out any leak point available! It also made an immediate improvement in heating and increase in the combustion temp up to about 200C. So, hey! Why not? A couple more bursts of air and now it's cranking its usual 215C-219C. Just food for thought. I now have a full compliment of replacement parts for the heater including gaskets and a spare pump. Thanks for the video!
Interesting! I've never tried that before but I’ll keep it in mind. Thanks for the tip!
Couldn’t finish the video because of the loud slamming sound in your transitions…😐
Your comment is not the first mention of this so I'm thinking I might edit the sound on this and re-upload it as a new video. Sorry about that!
A wood screw that fits and grips the inside of screen so you can pull screen out without deforming screen.
Ah OK, thanks!
The strut linked is too strong for lid weight and won't retract; it takes all my freakishly powerful arm strength to close it. Is it defective?
Wow that is crazy. Sorry to hear that! It may be defective (or I guess it’s possible they changed their product since we linked it 🤨). I would recommend returning it and finding a similar one that will work. Did you get two and they’re both like that?
Very useful tips . I have the same unit in my semi truck, and it needs service, I believe now . The low voltage tip was great. I have this problem with my unit Also, my unit is showing a new code that is check motor 33 31 00
Glad these were helpful and I hope you’re able to get yours working properly without too much trouble. I don’t know much about error codes so can’t really help you there. The only error code we had was “err”. Good luck with it!
Atomiser screen comes out easily using a coach screw. Clean it with brake cleaner spray and if really carboned up just heat it with a propane gas torch.
Okay good idea - but what kind of coach screw? I’m not familiar with that term. Thanks!
A wood screw that fits and grips on the inside of screen so you can pull screen out.
I see, ok thanks for clarifying that. Great idea!! 😎
Well my head is finished in no small part thanks to your advice -- it's the first thing I've build since constructing a sconce ca. 1978. I departed from your design and created some unexpected problems. Characteristically overthinking it, I was concerned with sides higher than the seat that my ample thighs would be constricted, if not wedged between the sides -- I did not include the side storage area. My design has both front and sides at seat height, with seat platform resting on side panels -- no need for seat side or hinge supports -- and lid with spacers resting on seat. This introduced some trouble; e.g. I cut the seat platform too narrow and had to use a toddler's/marine seat so the lid would close. In hindsight a small seat is a good choice for a van where space and portability is a premium. The biggest disappointment is weight: with just 1/2" ply, no lumber and no side storage area it still weighs in at nearly 30 lbs. Next time I'll use expensive ultralight birch. I found the coolest diverter on Etsy, 3D printed in high gloss gold. Its funnel closes perfectly into a milk jug. Wish I knew how to link a picture. Thanks again!
I'm glad we were able to inspire you to not only build your own, and that you were able to make it your own as well. Hope it works out well for you! Thanks for the comment!
@@TimAndShannonLTD More than inspiration; without your plans I'd have had no shot! FYI it appears they finally make 1.2 mil biodegradable bags for like a dime apiece. Consider linking if appropriate. Thx again and Mxm. PS one downside of my design is there's no room for lid strut, but I did make an 11th hour decision to add the seat strut -- it's on order.
Cant find your video on removing the passenger seat. can you link it?

cool! thanks for the tutorial. I'm looking to make some temporary window screens for a vacation rental in the BVl. All the windows are open air so I need a way to keep the critters out. I can't use magnets since the window frames are not metal, so I will be using adhesive velcro tabs on white vinyl tape and black noseeum mesh.
Cool , enjoy the process!! 👍
Yup. That was certainly it for my case (2019 sprinter). Thought the handle mechanism was gone initially until I saw and tried this
Oh good! Glad this helped you out!!

Hi Tim, Thanks for this video. I noticed a small green heat insulator around 19:44. Am i correct in thinking these (2 off, or 4 off), fit somewhere between the outer Aluminium heat exchanger and the plastic outer cover? Did you refit yours or bin them like I did, thinking they were broken bits of gasket?
Hi Dave - I think you are correct in your thinking. And no I did not refit that green thing when I put the unit back together. However, keep in mind that the unit you see in the video was our old one that I used just to demonstrate how to dismantle and clean the various parts, so it didn't really need to work correctly after reassembly because we had already installed a brand new one in the van.
Deez Nutz @ 3:06
So, do you A) Put the microwave back, and then can't open your draw? B) Leave microwave out to slide about? C) Have to mess around moving the microwave every time your driving/parking up?
Microwave stays right where it is under the counter. We don’t slide it out or anything. Works great just like that.
I've watched hundreds of videos and my mind spins with inspiration, but this one video has given me meaningful knowledge. Thank you.
Great to hear that, thanks!
Thank you. I fixed my door on my 2014 RAM Promaster van. For under 5.00. I did the velcro and I moved the cable down a smidgen. Working great.
Excellent, glad that worked for you!
No china
I did this about three months ago and the problem just returned. :( Im pretty frustrated with these heaters at this point and feel like this shouldnt happen with a 1200 dollar heater. I did the atomizer screen and took the whole unit apart to make sure there wasnt any soot in the combustion chamber. Gonna do it again and this time I will do the fuel filter and glow plug as well. How long did this solve the problem for?
We feel your pain. We had to do this a number of times and the problem kept returning. One thing we learned is to NOT let the heater run at a low thermostat setting to maintain a comfortable temperature for long. Or if we do, make sure it runs on HIGH (like set the thermostat for 90 degrees or so) for at least 30 minutes once a week. Also if you are using it in the mountains at altitudes, make sure you have a high-altitude kit installed unless you're sure that your model doesn't require it. We ended up replacing ours after 3 years and now after 2 years with the new one we've not had any more trouble. Hope this helps!
@@TimAndShannonLTD thanks for the reply! I just did the fuel filter and am currently running it with thermostat set to 100 degrees lol, gonna let it purge for a couple hours and hopefully i can make it through the winter. I have the D2S2 which is supposed to have a built in altitude sensor so I dont think Ill need to do the upgrade.
I’m having this issue with my 2017 sprinter
Sorry to hear that and hope this simple fix helps!
I just bought a ready made van. Maybe he left the back panel off the kitchen cabinet (backing up to the sliding door?) he just has some cross bars to hold things in. I thought it was lazy work, but maybe it was on purpose. 🤔
That could be - we've seen a number of builds that have an access door on the back of the cabinet that you can get to when the slider is open.
It’s perfect for coffee lovers who need their fix on the go! Thanks for sharing your insights-it’s definitely making me want to try it out! ☕
Yeah we've been using it daily and it's been great. Using HOT water really extends the battery life too. We've actually not used it with cold water many times because we mainly use it in the van rather than out on a hike or camping.
@@TimAndShannonLTD Sounds perfect for van life! It’s super helpful 🙂 Looking forward to seeing more videos from you soon! 😁

Getting ready to start van life, glad these videos are here so I don't feel so uneasy. thnx
Thanks for the feedback and good luck with your new adventure - You got this! 👍
Kudos on the vid very detailed but nothing is perfect in life - My Espar is home to a 2016 Freightliner class 8 truck ( big rig ) Its done well with zero maintenance for 3 years until recently - Still works but keeps giving me fuel pump maintenance needed message on module - Love Espar heater better then the old gas hog floor furnace in my 105 year old house every time but living out of a truck 300 days a year never really feels like home if that makes sense
Well I hope you’re able to get that figured out without too much effort or expense!
When I was 25 I wanted to travel up to the Yukon but i didn't and i qill always regret it
No twitter account yet?
Nope!
Most people add a long cord to their footstool to pull it in after they have entered
Good idea!
This is the only design online that makes sense. Please confirm weight ~40 lbs; I will put handles on and drag it out from under a bench each use. Could save weight mixing in 3/8", but looks like sides and inside structural 5x8" pieces consume much of the plywood sheet. The seat strut is brilliant. Thanks! ps did you consider a single two gallon jug and hose? One feature I'm interested in a one-way "valve" -- actually just a thin, funnel shaped balloon thing that allows pee to pass and then close up; see Trelino. Can't find such an animal. Thanks!
Hi there. We can’t really confirm the weight. It’s attached to the wall and floor. Yes you could save some weight by using 3/8 ply in places though. And no, the 2 separate 1-gallon jugs work really well for us so we haven’t considered other options.
@@TimAndShannonLTD I'm going to retrofit your design without side storage and possibly with rear storage. Design decision is whether to use full 2x2 frame to support the seat. Since sides are higher than seat, and I'd no longer have storage partition to support side of seat; I'd need a third seat support in addition to pieces 20 & 21. The frame would support seat and add strength at the expense of weight, perhaps offset by less beefy plywood. Goddess help me. Thx again.
@@3genacsounds like a good plan for your situation. Good luck and enjoy the journey!
Do you find the raised right side panel -- the one at your left thigh -- uncomfortable at all? If so I'll try to figure out how to alter the lid such that it can rest flat on the seat edge when closed, not on the raised side panel, maybe by tacking trim panels on the lid sides. Worth the trouble? No problem too small to analyze to death.
More light and closer! Close-ups would be very helpful. Thanks for the info. This is very helpful.
Noted for a better production next time and glad it was helpful!
