Padstow Farewell
The origins of this forebitter are shrouded in mystery. At this time of year, as I think about those cherished friends and relations who are no longer with us, this sad little song seems apt..

Coventry Carol
มุมมอง 4014 วันที่ผ่านมา
This 16th-century carol/lullaby was traditionally performed during the Coventry Mystery Plays. Known as 'The Pageant of the Shearmen and Tailors' it tells the story of King Herod's massacre of the innocents. It's one of saddest songs ever written and, given the level of suffering inflicted on 'the innocents' in modern society the story is as relevant today as it was 2000 years ago. Merry Christ...
Barrett's Privateers
มุมมอง 282หลายเดือนก่อน
Although Barrett and the Antelope are fictional, this song is full of the rich history of Canada's 18th century privateering exploits. Have a look at www.cindyvallar.com/canprivateers.html

As if going to sea in the 17th and 18th century wasn't tough enough!
Go to Sea
มุมมอง 5964 หลายเดือนก่อน
As with most old folk songs, the origins of this forebitter are shrouded in mystery; mid 19th century seems a reasonable guess though. It's been sung by many a sailor and a few others, including The Byrds (Jack Tarr The Sailor) and the Grateful Dead (Off to Sea Once More). It's a salutary tale about the hardships endured by whalemen, especially those who spent all their hard earned on booze and...
Old Maui
มุมมอง 3334 หลายเดือนก่อน
This classic mid 19th century 'sea-song' is an accurate depiction of 'a dam tough life, full of toil and strife' that was whaling in the Southern Seas. The Pacific whalers gathered in numbers at Lahaina Maui for fitting out ready to hunt bowhead whales off the Kamchatka peninsula. Crews would also rest in Maui before making the long journey back to America. 'Rest' would have included plenty of ...
Sail Away Ladies
มุมมอง 1455 หลายเดือนก่อน
The origins of this old folk song are shrouded in mystery. The 1920's version was an instrumental for fiddle made famous by virtuoso “Uncle Bunt” Stevens (1879-1951). As for the lyrics; maybe they originated in the British Isles in the 18th century, maybe they evolved from a negro spiritual or perhaps they're a nod to the exploits of twelve Cape Cod women who braved the oceans. Whatever, today ...
Sailing Over the Dogger Bank
มุมมอง 5375 หลายเดือนก่อน
A traditional shanty circa 1890, in need of some translation methinks.. Dogger Bank - treacherous fishing ground in the North Sea. 'Give a sheet' - slacken a rope attached to a sail, although the lyric could have been written 'give a shit', which you'd have to do whilst riding out a storm over the Dogger bank. Twigger - young sailor (tell him enough times and he'll 'twig' what you're on about)....
Lady Franklin's Lament
มุมมอง 110ปีที่แล้ว
The search for the Northwest Passage captivated peoples imagination and sent many men to their deaths. The story of Sir John Franklin's final disastrous expedition has marked him as 'The man who ate his boots'. Franklin’s attempt to find ‘the sea route to the orient’ is a dreadful tale about disease, starvation and possibly even cannibalism. It would be wrong to call it a failed mission though,...

Not the most cheerful of carols, but it tells a part of the story and it is my favourite.
The Wellerman
มุมมอง 663 ปีที่แล้ว
Everyone and his brother's had a crack at this, but hey, it's a rousing little ditty! Weller Bros. was an Australian shore based whaling company that operated primarily along the southern coast of New Zealand from 1830 to 1840. Although they ran many vessels, none appear to have been named the ‘Billy o’ Tea’ (pot for making tea obvs.). Anyone under the employ of the Weller Bros. were referred t...
Living in a Ghost Town

Rumour was that my ‘genes’ include a sizeable dollop of Southern European, so during lockdown I decided to investigate. It’s a straightforward exercise, you pay your money to ‘Ancestry’ or some similar organisation, they send you a bottle, you spit in it (could be worse!) and they tell you about your roots. Disappointingly, it turns out that I’m as ‘Estuary’ as they come. Nevertheless, the exer...

A great mate was recently knocked off his bike. It was a spectacular feat of aerial manoeuvring executed with cat-like precision, thus avoiding serious injury, which, of course means we can take the xxxx mercilessly...

Freedive in the vicinity of whales and you become immersed in their song; you feel it and it touches your soul.
I'm in a flood of tears ... and QPR won! 😂
blessings to all who listen here today. Jesus of Nazareth came to Earth to show US the way through the King Herod's world.

What a great song ... I believe they are the Jurassix Sea Shanty singers from Dorset who play for fun and put any donations towards the South West Hospice for children ... a very worthy cause!
Krabs Is A 🐬
It was a requested for a wedding so I had to give it a shot :)
I wish I could find the (full) sheet-music of this song
Musescore has a version musescore.com/user/7600976/scores/5244361 Although this is probably one of those songs that has enjoyed a rich life of barroom improvisation :) Thank you for your interest and best regards, Graham O
Nice
Cool and romantic lyrics here. Thanks for sharing th-cam.com/channels/iyrl1Ct3WFJKvZETgzg62w.html
Very nice
Brilliant! A few of these images are worryingly too close to the truth! Love the soundtrack - is that Mr O'Neill's performing? Many thanks for sharing. All the best, Martin
