If the tanker was moving, she would have displayed navigation lights - red on port side, green on starboard, and two white range lights fore and aft. It's very distinctive, and something to look for when radar isn't giving information you need. Sailing near these behemoths is also a case for an AIS receiver, which will give you their course, speed, and closest approach. Good call on timing for the mooring ball. Ordinarily, best time to depart for Avalon would be late morning, so you can sail at least part of the way. Nice job picking up the mooring in Two Harbors.
Thank you for keeping the video simple
Thanks
Looks like a “Carl Alberg” design sloop… or at least a design influenced by Alberg.
That’s a good eye! It’s an Alberg 30
@@RameyFamily sold Cape Dorys right up till their fold or whatever..talk about a design mated with quality. Dream Vessels.
A few videos ago I anchored next to a cape dory It was gorgeous
@@RameyFamily Your walking the piers and slips???? I’m jealous as hell. That world was mine and professional for over 27 years. I’m fresh water now, not salt, and it was year round in warm sea water, doing everything from fellow captain license instruction. Sales. Brokerage, Racing. Rigging, Olympics and was a USYRU Judge when that was the ruling body. And so much more everyone wonders why I don’t write a book… the point was. My crew deck decoration, ended up being my wife and we both couldn’t wait to get to work each morning. So yes, I do have a good eye noticing the design of your elite, Alberg 30’, but it’s more of an experienced eye. Blue water sailing and fishing. Yes it was a horrible way to make a living.
That’s so cool. I’m selling my Alberg. These videos are about a year behind. I’m off to a bigger boat. I was anchored next to that dory off of little scorpion anchorage off the Santa Cruz island
Greetings from a fellow SB channel sailor. I miss Smuggler's, your reward for beating through some nasty weather at times. So pretty back there.
It IS really pretty out there. Lots of cool anchorages out there
Nice, bro. When were you out there?
Oct 15th 2023 lol All my videos are one year behind almost to the day. I usually have about 12-15 videos already made and and they are scheduled to go public every other Saturday
@@RameyFamily only 1 year behind. hahaha
lol. Thats back when I was texting you about trying to catch you at Catalina
@@RameyFamily right on. seems like it wasn't that long ago but that year flew by
Nice job on the mooring, and hats off to the ladies for sticking with it, despite the long hours at sea and sea sickness! Beautiful cinematography with the drone too! I did a couple triathlons there in Catalina. Nice place to chill Have fun!
That’s so cool. Amber runs as well. Tough mudders, Spartans. All of it. When I got out of the Corps I told myself I wouldn’t ever run again unless I had to…🤣. Running now would destroy me! Thanks - catching a drone at sea is harder than it looks
@@RameyFamily Still do the Spartans, but running sucks. Too boring. CrossFit is where it's at. Never been healthier. By the way, is that a scopolamine patch your using or something naturopathic? Do you get groggy with it? Getting ready to do a sail from Tampa to St. Augustine next week and haven't sailed in a few years. Wondering if my sea legs will be rusty.
Scopolamine It’s dope, side effects are possible but on the rare side Sometimes it’s just dry mouth.
Was that boat that round around sv Sancerre, aka "Sail Channel Island", Captain Dan Ryder?
Yep I think it was. I thought it was fanfare on the radio but I am pretty deaf hahaha
where are your spreader lights? cant figure out if theres supposed to be one on each spreader? theres one light in the center of the spreaders that I see but is there also a light on the mast head?
Spreader arm lights are meant to illuminate the deck. I put these ones on each spreader arm facing down . The light in the middle facing forward is NOT a light with the same purpose The centered forward facing one is a STEAM LIGHT. If you are running the engine (under power) and using the engine to move at all, then that MUST be on to tell other vessels you are under engine power because the rules of the road are now different Who has right of way is determined by who is under power or who is under sail Also note this boat was never intended to go back into ocean water and it is to stay on the lake, so knowing that they are all on the same circuit which is not how it’s suppose to be done. The anchor light on top is for when your at anchor (its own switch) the steam light should also be on its own switch And the spreader and lights can be on its own switch or with other non mandatory lights you may want to have for your own convenience I hope that makes sense
Nice brother! Love the grill 😊.
Thanks How are you? Where are ya these days?
@@RameyFamily I’m right where you left me…lol. I just finished my lithium battery DIY project and so far it was a huge success. I’m installing a Cubic Mini wood burning stove this week and moving aboard next week. Bill and I are heading south and then to the Bahamas in early November. The time has come for me brother…and Suzy is going with me…yay. What are you up to these days?
@damage_control_sailing finishing up escrow on a place on the east coast and prepping to move over there
"Being present in the now" is a concept I have wrestled with in every phase of my life. Nothing could be more important in life than THAT simple sentence. We owe it to our love ones, our friends, those we serve, and most importantly, ourselves. It reminds me of a powerful quote I read online recently: "Beware of Destination Addiction.....a preoccupation with the idea that happiness is in the next place, the next job or with the next partner. Until you give up the idea that happiness is somewhere else, it will never be where you are."
Hey! Awesome video! I noticed you talked about the Sirius DS40, which I've been thinking of as my top pick for a bluewater boat. You mentioned there's a lot of 'give and take' with it-could you elaborate on that? I'd love to hear your thoughts!
It was the keel I LOVE the interior design and flow of that boat, but you trade off with the keel I wrote Kretchmer and asked what he thought about the Sirius and he said exactly that That’s not the keel you want out there
The RWB on the can stands for red, white, and blue?
🤷♂️
Another fine vid. I’ve said it before but I really enjoy your editing style. The talk about difficulties being present when you are filled with ambition is something I also struggle with and it’s good to know I’m not alone!
Thanks so much
7:18 the balance of away and gone to home base is a delicate balance worth maintaining. I have been a traveler for 20+ years. I feel like I'm finally balanced. My homebase is san diego. I have hitched on sailboats more than once along my travels. Living on a sailboat is a beautiful life.
Dude, that was a fine ass ship!
31ft boat
Oops,looks like you didn't win...
I was waiting for the dramatic ending. Music intensifying, waves crashing, torn sail, 50/50 chance we do not make it back to harbor. Then you went to sleep, something we had to fight you to do when you were growing up. Dad
Ohh Jem This Great Sailboat ⛵⛵⛵⛵⛵⛵⛵🌊
Beautiful bay...sounds like it could be a rough ride in bad weather though! Love how you ended the video!
Wish I was there now
Stuck at work?
Bro you're hilarious nice meeting you!!!
You too!!
Woohoo! A yingling runner! Lol
Wish you could get a hard top to cover the nav station.
may be it is a safe and extremely seaworthy boat, but hell it has got one ugly interior ....
I never got that impression. I thought she was nice. I did step foot on an Oyster yacht once and WOW 🤩
@@RameyFamily never had a chance but I am sure oyster is a masterpiece
I have almost zero sailing experience, but I can understand what you are talking about. Thank you.
Glad it was helpful!
We had Water Lily in there a few months ago. Great overnight spot. Definitely check out backside like Coaches Prietos or Albert’s - fantastic anchorages.
I'll check it out!
What a gem of a cove. Could spend a lot of time there lowering the heart rate.
Love the blue blue water
Awesome! I hope to make it up to Santa Cruz Island soon. Thanks for the inspiration.
You should!
I live in Fresno and have been sailing Millerton and Huntington Lake my entire life. I've had Catalina 22, 25, and 27 Plus plus an Oday 25 at both lakes. I haven't sailed millerton lake in probable 8 years the new marina looks really nice. I wish it was in there when I was there all the time..
You should play that background music over the boat's stereo every time the seas get rough.🤑
Love the alberg. I bought a 1965 30. I saved money for 17 of the 20 years in the army. Just retired and living on it. In Seattle and next year going across the pacific and eventual circumnavigation. I didn’t know a thing about sailing but knew I wanted to do it. My boat is stable and slow. I could have got newer boat but the alberg was solid and I set it up how I wanted with plenty of money left over to travel. I found that no matter what boat I got I was going to spend money to set up the way I want. It was between alberg and an island packet 27
hey can you tell more about how you are already retired
I may make a video on that one day I haven’t decided quite yet. It’s more of a financial state than an age. I was made 100% service connected after Iraq, but then went to school and got my degree. On the way I learned a bit about financial management and began to pay off debt which I did for 7 years, then I used the excess money to invest, which is something I continue to do. Now most of my income streams are more “passive”
Coronado 25, best boat
hey I have the same boat trying to get it back together, did your coronado 25 have a mastcap? looks like nothing there but wires, if not how did you attach nav lights to the top of the mast?
I do have a mastcap, yes And I attached an anchor light to the top by making a bracket and drilling into the side / top and screwing it in and sealing it You can “thread the hole” and then use screws dipped in a marine sealant/adhesive A simple L shaped bracket works just fine
D!ck move by that fishing boat waking you. I've rarely done it, but 5 short horn blasts is appropriate when these guys are asleep at the wheel. Curious about your thoughts on the Cape Horn wind vane. They seem to work well and it looks like you guys had it dialed in. I've seen a couple of vids with folks having chafe issues down below... that would make me nervous for long passages!
Cape Horn is awesome The chaffing can be mitigated by simply having another line on hand and ready - although I have never needed to swap mine out. I think the Cape Horn sets the market standard for other models, but that’s just my opinion. It helps that the designer built it specifically for Alberg 30’s though How was keeldrageepalooza 2024?
I just got into sailing this year. I bought a Compac 19 back in March and it's been at Huntington Lake all summer, since the beginning of June. I have to take it out before Labor Day and I'm planning my next adventure for it. Would putting it in Millerton for September through November be a good idea? How is the wind there? At Huntington we are spoiled with a steady westerly wind that goes right down the length of the lake every day like clockwork from 11-7.
If you plan to sail during winter then yes put it in Millerton The guy who sold me rosary spent his summers up there racing Winters in Millerton. Millerton has a steady westerly that pops up as soon as the temperatures rise In the summer you can bet you me ass your sails are up from 2pm on Many days about noon and on. Best winds are at 3:30-7:30 pm Do it. 👍
@@RameyFamily I think I will! Thanks
I own an old 1989 ip 27 and love it. Taken it on three ocean crossings. If I win the lottery I’ll own one of the new ones
I'll be honest first time watching I herd family I was struggling to identify who was mother and who was daughter, and I couldn't so I watched some more videos and it clicked. Good for you so upfront I missed it. Enjoy your dreams and be free
Get rid of the irritating “music”!!!
Looking back on it, yeah- agreed 👍
I could watch bow waves ALL day! They are so mesmerizing!
Dolphins....I look forward to seeing them on my bow wave!
Great boat, and accurate review except Whitby boat Works is on the north west shore of Lake Ontario, a couple thousand miles from the Atlantic (east) coast.
Didn’t know that. Thanks for the knowledge Although from California that is still very much “east coast” from here 😆. All the same I would like to sail on the Great Lakes a few times in my lifetime
@RameyFamily Maine is a thousand km west of where I am, so they are Westerners as far as I'm concerned. I'm a 20 minute drive to the most easterly point in N America.
@@newfiescreech7328wow😲. I bet the weather there is like a whole different planet
I am really surprised the entire crew did not mutiny and throw you in the water instead of the champaign.
A very wise disclaimer at the end!
Yay. Nothing can go wrong now. 😬
How many nights in a row can you do it and feel great. That is the question 😊
Depends on where and the boat. In my Alberg 30 off of Catalina island - forever. On a Coronado 25 In Millerton lake in the summer heat? 2-3 days
@@RameyFamily 👍👍😊
Soon, you can show me your California waters...hopefully it is warmer than the PNW!
Crealock's sailboats are distilled blue water design philosophy. Overbuilt in every regard, pragmatic everywhere you look. She may not get you there fast, but she'll likely get you there ALIVE, which most sailors would agree is an admirable quality. Nothing is unsinkable, and the roaring 40s will forver swallow ships, but taking a Crealock 40 or 44 around The Horn is a bucket list thing to me, if but I had the money, and cajones.
