Welcome to my channel. I am retired and live on Mount Desert Island, Maine. I make videos about various aspects of life on the island. My topics include reviews of lobster rolls, sailing the waters around the island, the solitude of winter, dealing with the hordes of summer tourists, housing and the cost of living here and videos about the towns on the island. For example I go to Bar Harbor pretty much every month so you can watch my Bar Harbor videos and see the town on crowded summer days as well as quiet snowy winter days and everything in between My cat Blackie also sometimes agrees to star in a video. I hope you enjoy my channel.
August 13, 2024 - Sailing From Swans Island to Southwest Harbor, ME
In this video I show our return trip from our overnight in Mackeral Cove on the north shore of Swans Island, ME. The trip over was rough with spray over the top of the dodger a few times. Rough weather makes lobster gear hard to spot, so I didn't film the trip over. As you will see the trip back was in much calmer conditions.

Solar/Battery Backup Power Upgrade - New LiFePO4 Batteries
มุมมอง 1.3Kหลายเดือนก่อน
Today, July 26, 2024, the two new 24VDC 200Ah LiFePO4 batteries I ordered 10 days ago arrived. These batteries are replacements for the eight Grp 27 105 Ah 12 VDC lead acid batteries I originally set the system up with. About 19 months ago I bought two of the same LiFePO4 batteries, so this new upgrade brings my original system with about 5-6 usable KwH of battery capacity to a system with 20 K...
July 14, 2024 - Afernoon Sail out into the Gulf of Maine
มุมมอง 384หลายเดือนก่อน
Yesterday we took Seaquestor, our Allied 36 ketch, out into the Gulf of Maine to get away from the heat and to enjoy sailing out in the open ocean. Unfortunately, the farther we got from land the more the wind dropped off. So we turned around, returned to Southwest Harbor and spent the night on our mooring.

I had to force myself, but I went out for another single handed sail. Life is hard.
My prostate biopsy was by far the most painful thing I’ve ever experienced.
Sorry to hear that. From my perspective it sounds like you need a more skilled urologist.
Would you buy it again now in 2024 or would you build a pi5 setup ? Thanks
I haven't seen a Pi 5 yet so I can't comment. As a computer for my wife to use the Pi400 is idea because the computer is integrated into the keyboard. She is not particularly computer literate and having multiple components on the table would cause issues.
Todd, thank you your videos, I’m having my left knee replacement surgery on Sept 19; so I have been doing my pre op exercises, looking forward to getting this done so I could start doing some normal things again. And congratulations to you for the great progress you have made. Thank you again for your great videos.
Great expositiion. I´ve learned a lot. Thank you.
Glad to be able to share what little I know.
oh brother...Cruise ship bans...ridiculous...
It is Bar Harbor. Downtown Bar Harbor is about 4 blocks long. When there are three cruise ships in it is absolutely packed with people. The cruise ship situation is an ongoing fight between the tourist business community and the actual town residents. I don't live there so it isn't my fight.
Thanks todd great information.
Glad to be of assistance. If you have a biopsy coming upI hope it goes well and comes back negative for cancer.
where are you sailing out of ? we are in Montreal on the ottawa river
We sail out of Southwest Harbor, Maine on the south side of Mount Desert Island.
Hey Todd! That’s fabulous news!!! Thanks for the update. I wish you a long and happy life to continue to enjoy that lake. Take care my friend.
Thanks. I hope your biopsy goes well and comes back negative.
Thank you! I go in tomorrow for my own procedure and your calm demeanor and honesty have really helped me. I hope your test results were cancer free and you stay in excellent health!!
Thank you. I hope your biopsy goes as easily as mine did. My results came back with 11 cores normal and one showing inflammation. No cancer. So I am off the hook for now, particularly since my PSA actually went down a few points the last time I saw my urologist. Also my urologist left the area, so I no longer have a urologist unless I want to drive 100 miles. Since I am in my 70s I think I am done with this stuff.
Good video
Thanks.
Love all of your videos. Thinking about moving to the island. Is there a way to contact you?
There is a contact e-mail under "about" on my TH-cam home page. I am glad you liked the video. To find it click on "more" at the end of the short description under my name at the top of my home page. www.youtube.com/@todddunn945
Thanks Todd, I watched the whole video. I'm 71 with a PSA of 8. Getting the biopsy in a week. This calmed me down!
I hope it goes well for you. I was 71 when I had my biopsy. I think a big factor is the skill of your urologist. I sincerely hope you have a good doctor. I also hope that the results are like mine were - negative for cancer in all 12 cores.
My first day home was fifteen hours after surgery. There was a lot of screaming and swearing. He looks like me after the first week. Pain management is no longer a reason to be admitted.
Actually I shot this video about 5 and a half weeks after surgery. I was using the walker to make a point. As I said in the video I shot another video when I came home. I spent the first night in the hospital and came home about 3 PM the next day.
Good information
I am glad you found it useful.
i been boat shopping for past 4 months and the boats i been seeing they are either live aboard or left alone. and if your boat ends up on the hard for five plus years you might as well give it away to save on boatyard rents... nobody is giving 60 grand of an endouver 40 cc thats all the wood is pealing off in sheets. i ended up with a nice gem 1977 morgan 41 cc ketch in like new condition. all redone .. its was the cabin below that sold me.. i got 12 to 18 months to retire... i got till then get a solar arch and batteries installed.. going off grid.. not a dock boat
Well, our boat isn't a "dock queen". We use it enough. We are not out today because the fog hasn't lifted out of the harbor for two days. As far as a boat being on the hard for years goes, it all depends on how it is stored. I know of some boats in side storage that are in inside storage and are just like the day they went in, except for a little dust. If a boat is outside uncovered or under a tarp or shrink wrap it is a different story. A Morgan OI 41 ketch is definitely a roomy boat. Not the greatest sailing boat due to its keel configuration, but definitely comfortable. I hope the boat works for you. What did you have before?
@@todddunn945 my other last boat lol was an 1980 carlecraft houseboat, 47 ft x 14 ft wide..lol yea its been a while im looking for a company to do a custome arch for asolar on it now.. baby steps
im on day 12…. knee swollen like a football- for the first time im beginning to regret having this done
Elevation and ice are your friends.
Really glad you had a positive experience, I’ve had two. Unfortunately mine wasn’t so good, I have three friends that were in the same boat as me. I now tell everyone “get sedated, it hurt like crazy”. My PSA was 7.9 when I was diagnosed at 50. That’s a whole other story.
If it hurts you need to tell the urologist so they can give you another shot before continuing. I am sorry to hear that your biopsy was painful. I have no idea what to expect if I get another biopsy because my apparently skilled urologist moved away. I sincerely hope that you don't have an aggressive cancer.
@@todddunn945 Oh I told him, he just kept going. 19 times, it was supposed to be 18 but one of the samples came out before they got it out of me. Both biopsies sucked, I wouldn’t get another unless I’m sedated. On a positive note there are tons of new treatments out so if you are diagnosed you may be able to avoid all the side effects. Though I hope you negative, crossing fingers.
@@todddunn945 Did you says he moved away about 100 miles away, less than 2 hrs drive. With such good experienced doctor doing a painless biopsy I will definitely do not mind the drive. A good urologist or a physician is hard to find that care more about you than $$$.
@@allanc9472 I don't know where my doctor moved to. The closest urologist is now a 100 mile round trip drive. Due to traffic, it is more like a three hour round trip. I don't know what the urologists in "the city" are like.
well i thankyou for uploading your video . i am scheduled to have a prostate biopsy in about 10 days and i thank you for all the information it was very helpful, it settled my fears a lot. now you stay healthy and enjoy life too. god bless . i will post another message after my procedure was done to give you an update ok buddy again thank you for you video. SINCERELY ..
I am glad to be able to reassure you. I hope your biopsy is pain free and that they don't find cancer.
Best explanation yet. Thank you I thought I had a problem. But I don't. Thank you Sir
You are welcome.
Thank you so much for your time in creating these videos. I’m a scheduled for TKR on 10/8/24. 😊
I hope it goes well for you and that you have a great recovery. Do remember that my videos show my recovery, not what anyone else can expect.
Nice video. Where is your boom?
Hanging on a rack on the back of my shed at home. I intentionally leave it off so that I won't be tempted to try to use the main sail. I am in my 70s and no longer consider it safe to leave the cockpit to do sail handling while underway. Also the boat reaches 6-7 knots in any wind over about 12 knots.
Best examination of these lights ihave found😊
I am glad you found it helpful.
3 days out from total knee replacement and no walker is not wise especially for older folks. No offense. Do glad you are doing well
The need for a walker depends totally on your strength and balance. At no time did I feel the need for a walking aid. It worked for me.
Good job describing the procedure.
Thanks.

Ayup!
@@todddunn945 08/12/24: "Ayup!" rang a bell and opened my reading memory bank. You reminded me of one of the funniest books ever written: "The Maine Dictionary," John McDonald & Peter Wallace; Commonwealth Editions (Applewood Books 2000). See if you can get your hands on a copy unless you already own one! *** Also excellent: "The Old Somerset Railroad, A Lifeline For Northern Mainers," Walter MacDougall; Down East Books (2000); and *** "My Love Affair With The State of Maine," Scotty [Gertrude] Mackenzie [1917- ?] & Ruth Goode; original publisher, Simon & Schuster (1955); Durrell Publications (1976 paperback re-issue); Down East Books (1997 paperback).*** Fascinated by Scotty Mackenzie, I tried to find out where she ended up. Alas, she passed away anonymously...
Post Note (11/12/10; 08/12/24): I received a charming letter from Walter MacDougall, the author of "Somerset Railroad": “Milo Maine…Dear Don, thank you for your generous words on TOSRR.I grew up in the village of Bingham being born on the same year that trains stopped running from that point north. Freight trains still whistled coming from the fields below town, & engines were turned on the roundtable & backed into the roundhouse for an overnight stay. A kind engineer gave me rides, older people reminisced about the days of through passenger rides, & an alchemy which lived in a switch lantern wove a spell inside me. With appreciation…”

@@donreed Very Nice.
You were moving right along there on what looked like a beautiful day.
It was definitely nice sailing on the first clear (no haze) day in a while. Thanks for the comment.
08/10/24: The Cranberries are exactly in the same place they were last year --- what are the odds?!
I thought for sure the big storms last winter had moved them.
@@todddunn945 They certainly were almost powerful enough (Bar Harbor was blown way north to Quebec. Took four months to tow it back). Someone actually wrote this: "The plane landed on the runway closest to Billy Graham Parkway around 2:40 a.m. Friday... and a swarm of emergency vehicles was dispatched to meet the plane roughly an hour later, with stairs towed to the taxiway for passengers to exit the plane." An hour later. Right.
Easy on a big boat: they don’t blow off course as quickly as a little one. Now show us under sail.
It isn't hard under sail, but conditions have to be right. By that I mean the wind has to be from the right direction so that a miss doesn't put you on top of an adjacent boat On my boat I gradually furl the jib during the approach to control speed and "hopefully" stop at the mooring.
Terrific jaunt out there, thanks for sharing!
It was nice to get outside and sail on water that wasn't flat. Although I was definitely sore the next day.
Thanks for taking us along once again, i really must try sailing one of these days.
My pleasure Jeff.
Making up a new mizzen sheet MY MY? Why why?
The old one was at least 37 years old.
Beautiful. That's how I feel about my 49 year old Cape Dory Typhoon. She handles anything. Her captain might get nervous but she's takes care of me. 😊
Indeed, older boats are built to take it, or they wouldn't be older boats. It might have been a bit bouncy on a typhoon out there yesterday. We took some spray onto the bow of the Allied and the forward free board is almost 6'. So it might also have been a bit of a wet ride on a Typhoon. Thanks for the comment and keep sailing.
Bar harbor always so beautiful🎉
It is a nice town if you remove the tourists.
Having knee replacement Sept 13. Thanks for the video.
You are welcome. Do remember that this video shows my experience.
5/16 is what I used. That was the appropriate size for sheaves in the blocks. And with the 4 to 1 purchase I can deal with the smaller line. The line runs tgrouh the blocks much better.
I just got back from a sail and I wish I had done this years ago. The new 5/16" line runs through the blocks so much better than the old 3/8" line. Thanks for the comment.
I think you hdave addresses this before, but did you replace or point the bulkhead laminate?
The main bulkhead behind me in this video is white formica. Thet bulkhead was done when I bought the boat. I painted the rest of the faux wood grain formica back in 1997. All I did was thoroughly clean the formica to remove dirt and primarily any oils. I then put on two coats of Pettit EZPoxy one part urethane paint. It covered very well and has held up just fine for the 27 years since I did the painting. Thanks for asking.
Deck ice skates?
Hmm, maybe not.
@@todddunn945 Don't you have the agility of a tomcat? Today, it's going to be 105 in Fort Worth. I'd love to be sailing in the bay. Dare to dream. You're only 2,040 miles away.

Good day Sr. I just don't know what those settings mean. Float, absorption and bulk?
With reference to lead acid batteries. Bulk is the charging stage where the charger puts out maximum current into a significantly discharged battery. During bulk charging the battery voltage gradually increases as charging proceeds. Absorption is the charging stage that occurs after bulk charging has brought the battery up to is full charge voltage (typically about 14.3 volts for a 12 volt battery). When that happens the charger provides the current needed to hold the battery at the full charge voltage. As the absorption phase proceeds the charging current decreases until the "tail" current is reached. At that point charging current drops until if reaches a level needed to hold the battery at about 13.7 volts (float voltage). This final stage of battery charging is the "Float" stage. Float stage holds the battery at full charge and will last as long as the charger is connected to the battery and no current is drawn from the battery.
@@todddunn945 Thank you Sir. I guess my batteries were very low because I used my device for a little while and it died. Does it stop charging automaticaly?
@@1EQUALS-INFINITY It does turn off at night and the power will drop to a very low level when the batteries are fully charged.
