never in my life have i heard that you can take the fruit and veggies with you for free. but that is mosty because there is always atleast one of the weighing machines working i guess
yeah I think this worker was just being nice. I don’t think it’s an everyday thing!
Stuff stays fresh longers because they are delivered very fresh to shops, due to short and efficient logistics.
I can't remember any weather alerts with the air raid alarms, just test runs every month (I'm 45). Yes, fine to stop that. It's maybe good to keep the systems on standby (working) , in case the phone network is out.
i understand this should not matter, but i want to say that you are so gorgeous.
with the children it really depends on where you live, Both in USA and Netherlands. Yes Netherlands is generally more ''safe'' for kids. But you also have plenty of good USA cities and places where kids are also free and like this... You also have to remember Chigaco is like 5x the size of amsterdam or something and it has like 2 million people. Compared to the average dutch city having maybe like 100-200k. With only really the 4 giant cities having a lot more people...
its good to find a small boring cerial stock ... the healthiest diet is a natural one without processed carbs and sugars. Natural fats, vegetables and protein should rule. Besides ..why calling cash a medieval thing as if its bad ? ... please think further.
Americans think they have a terrific choice of cereals...but it's all the same raw materials dyed different colours with different artificial flavours. a bit like most of their awful food. (With love from the UK!)
Your not literally saying this but what I hear is that you are homesick.
@seppa193 you’re right I was homesick ☺️ I don’t see many foreigners in NL talk about this side of things on youtube so maybe I’ll make a video on it. I think it’s very normal to enjoy your new country but also miss the one you came from
@@boomdoze Yes, I think it's very normal too, no matter which countries are the old and new.
The small talk exists in The Netherlands, but it differs per region. In Drenthe, Limburg etc. you can do this.
At AH you can but you don’t have to weigh your plant stuff. Choice is dependent on the kind of store. You have small and big AH’s in one city. While I really don’t know what’s wrong with the cereal choice anyway. Face it, you going to tell me Americans choose every time a different box from the 1 million options? Of course not. It’s not a problem.
When i buy potatos from the supermarket they grow roots within a week, when i buy them directly from the farm they stay good for 5, 6 months
welcome to amersfoort :)
0:37 omg the sidewalk thing still baffles me after being back in the US for 7 years!!!
@@dux_bellorum it’s insane!!
20% tip is crazy. Why should they get a bigger tip if I order expensive food?
I know! I ask the same thing every time 😭
Try driving your 🚗 in the Netherlands. You will experience how traffic can really work when you have a society with good drivers who follows the rules. Infrastructure and urban planning is key.
Asked to tip in amsterdam? Yet another reason to never go to that open sewer of a city again.😮
I am happy that I don’t get bothered by waitresses or waiters. Leave me and my friends alone until I need you.
For me, as European, the incessant noise emanating from eating holes constantly is tiresome. They rarely have something to say, yet keep producing sounds.
Sorry but there are far more interesting things to do for fun than going to a shopping mall or a store. Furthermore you can do groceries here every day, the stores are everywhere and it does not take up so much time. And who needs 50 choices of toiletpaper? Five choices are good enough.
We really really do not need the waiter to come over every 5 minutes. One of the most annoying things in the US. I
About going to Target for fun, here in the Netherlands we have livable city, town and village centres. People will walk or bike down to the town centre to shop, look around or get a coffee or lunch, instead of Target or a mall. And often you will run into people you know and chat with them for a few minutes in some shop or just on the sidewalk. I've never been to the US, only Canada, but Target and stores like that seem to fulfill the function of the town centre in Europe, which feels like a poor consumerist substitute to me, but that's probably just my European perspective.
Smalltalk does excist in the Netherlands. Speaking the language helps a lot, people will more easily start a conversation when you speak in their language.
personally I find other countries in south + eastern europe to be more talkative, even if I don’t speak their language and they don’t know english well
lol, we go walk for a few hours in the park, for that's perfectly safe here in NL....
In Europe the cities are much older and not that suitable for car use. The oldest city in the Netherlands is Nijmegen (100 AD). Try walking and biking and enjoy the historic vibe. About small talk: here in the Netherlands it is done in Dutch and mostly about the weather. If you ask yourself if master a language? Try telling a joke in that language.
About smalltalk, you have it almost everywhere except in north part of Europe. Imagine being with your friends at the restaurant, having a good time, start talking with someone at next table, then the conversation spreads at both tables and you end putting those two tables together ( waiter is called to help) and ending the evening with potentially new friends That's Europe too. Little southern thought. Dutch are capable of small talk with strangers, more in smaller towns than in big, especially touristic citties, but even there, if you start with a nice comment you can have little social grooming hoing on. Just don't expect it from Dutch.
Nice and fun video: I can imagine you missed some enormous or can appreciate now you are back home. Tell me: the prices in the supermarket is it the same as here in the Netherlands? Or do you need to count taxes extra?
thank you!! I’m actually doing a video on US stores vs NL stores. It’ll be out in 2 weeks! 💗☺️ but yes, things are more expensive at the register because you don’t see the taxes up front!
These kind of videos usually end up being masturbatory content for Dutchies instead of being actually found by Americans lol. Im guilty of it too, why do you think i clicked it :P
It's just my opinion, but I think it is sad to look for connection to people you don't know. And you do that because being in the rat race, you don't have time to make real connection.
i just think it breaks up the day with a small funny interaction. I also don’t want it every day but it is nice to have sometimes!
(you don't make new friends when not meeting new people)
Making "shopping" fun, making spending your hard earned money on things you probably don't really need fun, sounds like the most American consumerism thing ever.
yep, never said it was a good thing. Just something I noticed that’s different
I am Dutch. My last paid full-time job included 39 paid holidays a year, in addition to regular public holidays like Easter and Christmas. No need to see Europe in 7 days... I feel that we have a much better life/work balance. Work to live vs live to work.
yes true!! Your work/life balance is definitely better in nl
In the late eighties grocery shops closed a lot earlier like 17:30. Even the big ones like AH. You really had to hurry after work to get your groceries. Now closing times are much better.
There are specific areas where you don't have to keep your dog on a leash, like a forest or park.
With regards to the variety of foods and spices: we have specialty stores and street markets for that in the Netherlands, at least in the larger cities you may expect a decent offering. And people here visit markets and shopping streets for fun in the Netherlands as well. And if you’re prepared to look outside processed food and fresh stuff like consider vegetables, fruits, meat, etc. I’ve more often than not heard from Americans that offerings in the Netherlands are better than what they’re used to. As for small talk: I’m Dutch and I’ve lived here like forever, and I make small talk! And people don’t mind and often happily engage. Just try it 😊
@@JulesStoop hmm, I wonder if the way we make small talk is different? Idk, I visited London for a week and spoke to more strangers there than the 4 months I’ve been in NL. I’ll look out for it though ☺️
@@boomdoze Yeah, it’s different. In the Netherlands you need a somewhat specific inducement to get a light conversation started, something mutual. Most obvious are a shared hobby/pastime, children and pets. Or it’s a situation where you can offer someone a hand (help or assistance). And if all else fails, there’s always the weather :)
To be fair, in London they speak the same language as you @boomdoze, here in the Netherlands the native language is Dutch and even though most of us speak English well Dutch is still our preferred language.
"Car culture is really a great thing". What is car culture and what is great about it?
@@renevaanhold I think car culture is living in a culture that relies on cars as the main mode of transportation. I never said it’s great. Actually I think it’s pretty awful for the environment and for your physical and mental heath. I just realized by being with my car again how ingrained car culture is within me. It makes me me safe and calm, which probably shouldn’t be the case.
what spices do you have that the netherlands doesn't?
spice mixes - jerk chicken is one I can think of right now. Also, I think the spices in the us are stronger.
A 120 different Chili pepper preparations which will spoil the taste of your food 😊
Sorry, America is a Failed State, and most people are mentaly ill
Some people do go to ikea and other house furniture stores just to stumble around. Or a store callen van Cranenbroek its a fun store with lots of diverent stuff and cheap
ah, I do really love stumbling around ikea 😆 i’ll check out the other store you mentioned though, thanks!!
@boomdoze your welcome they are mostly around the south part of the netherlands i know the ones in weerd, dongen, and Schijndel
And you really DO NOT want to accidentally walk on private property. In some states you can be legally killed for that heinous crime.
omg, funny story that actually almost happened to me!! I was walking home drunk with a friend and we accidentally stepped foot in this woman’s backyard. She said we had 30 seconds to get off her property or she would shoot us!!!! We ran so fast hahaa
@boomdoze That'd wild to me. From 7 to maybe 12 years old me and the neighborhood kids would run all through town, everyones yards, shooting airsoft or hitting each other with sticks. We only got yelled at maybe a half a dozen times. Only one old man threatened to shoot us because we made a tree house on his land, so fair enough we left lol.
@boomdoze but I don't think he had a gun lol, anyway, the police never bothered us as kids either. Despite constant mischief and trespassing. I think because the neighbors didn't mind.
Nice video, love them. Remember peeps, this is her opninion, based on her experience. These are not all facts for the Netherlands or Europe in general. In a normal restaurant in the Netherlands the waiter is supposed to check if you need anything. That might not be happening in some restaurants or cities, which to me is bad service. Luckely my experience is different then hers. Small talk; I have small talk in grocery about products or prices with other customers/strangers. Her experience of lack of small talk might be a language issue (not speaking the local language fluidly ) ??? When I went to Thailand I didn't have smalltalk , I don't speak the local language and not all locals speak English, so smalltalk was no there.
thank you!! and yeah people will have different experiences based on who they are. I actually find it super interesting that you didn’t experience small talk in thailand! When i was there I chatted with so many random thai people haha
A couple months ago I was in Paris, en the server ask my as a Dutchy for a tip. I looked at him and said, what? NO! The audacity
the AUDACITY!! it’s how I feel in Amsterdam when they ask 😆
For an experience, try a garden centre in the Netherlands, specially before Christmas. During the rest of the year it might be less frantic, but it might be closest that you get here.
ooh, I love a good christmas garden center. It reminds me of the uk! I’ll keep that in mind, thank you 💗
hi sweety, have you left us for US?
Hii! No, I’m just visiting the US for the holidays. I’ll be back in NL in January 🤗💗
Oké, enjoy your holidays.🥰💞
I pity US hospitality workers! They get paid low wages and must act like a slave pleasing their master, hoping for a tip.
it’s interesting actually! I hate tipping and would prefer wait staff to have a decent wage but many of my friends who are waiters love the game of tipping. If they’re charismatic then they say they can make so much more than a normal hospitality wage and bring home unreported cash each night
We also, as most europeans have. 230/400V wall outlet power. I really like to have almost half A kilovolt at home.
please stay there...don't come back !
Nice video...and i used to lovee driving myself but now it is way to bussy on the roads in the Netherlands to be fun.
I just think gas is too expensive in nl to drive without a care. Coming from the US your traffic in nl seems well balanced and not that busy!
I haven't seen all of your clips, but I've got to see this one ❤. I once visited the States for a training for 2 weeks, and I experienced the same reverse culture shocks as you did...in reverse?! Hahaha😂 In my response, I will give you more in-depth Dutch knowhow that you may find helpful in your journey. I see others have given you lots of input as well😊. Here we go. In the Netherlands, outside of the cities, there is very much a car culture. You don't have a lot of PT. It won't bring you everywhere and it doesn't drive as regular as in the cities. Growing up "in the province" means you get to have your first driving lesson on the crack of day on your 18th birthday, or nowadays on your 17th, and yes, we love driving at night on dark zigzag roads for miles on end without seeing anybody. Maybe a deer. Be aware😮 of 2 little lights hanging in mid-air. Just a little extra advice there😂😅. Small talk is something we do a lot. It is something I see that the Dutch and Americans have in common. So I didn't really get your point. Perhaps, where you live, in your neighbourhood, people are less talkative. Or you go to a smaller supermarket run by teens that only sell half prepped meals and toilet paper. I encourage you to get your bread at the bakery, your veggies at a grocery store, and the rest at the weekly markets. And then try small talk yourself. Be that "invader" and see how most people will react very positively when you make small talk. I even greet people on the street in my neighbourhood. Not to everybody, but I think you will develop a sixth sense for that. Give it time. Talk with people who have dogs. Talk about the weather😏🤭. The sidewalk story was really funny. It thought I was going crazy when I was in the States. I ended up taking a cab for a half mile walk because the pavement ended a block from the shop in a T split in the middle of a highway. I was like "huh...where did...no...errrrr....whut?". Oh, and eh, please do tip in restaurants. The hours are long, the wages are really bad (bare minimum, it doesn't really pay you a fair living), and be aware that they serve you food (as in your bread and butter. In our culture, we see people who serve your food as nearly holy). You grant them a tip because a, you survived the meal and b, based on how much you liked their service, quality of food, and general experience. In a non personal/pick up place you have been before, it's nice if you round up (1-2,5%), in a dining it's polite if you pay 2,5-5% and in restaurants is nice if you pay 5-10%. And be aware that "nice" in Dutch means that if the service is supurb, you pay them 10%, if you're satisfied 5% and if it was blah 2,5%. Of course, this depends on what you can miss too. So it is an unspoken rule. It's one of politeness, and it's an extra. But really appreciated by the staff. The next time you visit, they will give you better service, and their smiles are more than well meant. Try it out?! And yeah, the other way around counts as well. So if you never tip (and you are a regular!) they think you are a cheapskate/sourpuss, so they serve what you deserve.😂 Enjoy your next adventure. Lots of love, Vicky
oh wow, thanks so much for the detail vicky ☺️💗💗 i really appreciate it!! I had no idea it was polite to tip 2-10% in NL. I’ll definitely keep that in mind when going out to eat as I was under the impression that tipping is really frowned upon here. I’m sorry you experienced first hand the awkward sidewalks we have here! It’s so awful that we’re forced to drive cars everywhere and can’t even walk to the store if we want to. And yeah, you’re spot on about the supermarkets in my town! Only teens work there so that probably does affect the interactions quite a lot. This was really insightful , thanks again 🥰🖤
