Hi! I'm a geophysicist specializing in methods for determining the inner structure of the Earth from geophysical observations, mainly disturbances in the Earth's gravity and magnetic fields. I also develop open-source software in Python and C for processing, modelling, and visualizing geophysical data. I'm an advocate for openness in the scientific process and the adoption of best practices in computational research. I post tutorials, talks, and other such content on this channel.

Fatiando a Terra: P and SV wave finite differences simulation (Rayleigh wave)
มุมมอง 1.8K11 ปีที่แล้ว
A 2D finite differences simulation of P and SV wave propagation in the Earth's crust. The energy of the waves gets trapped on the surface, generating a Rayleigh wave. The small plot at the bottom shows the particle movement at the recording station (triangle). Notice that the x component arrives first, creating an elliptical particle movement at the station. Created using software Fatiando a Te...
Fatiando a Terra: SH wave finite differences simulation (Love wave)
มุมมอง 1.6K11 ปีที่แล้ว
A 2D finite differences simulation of SH wave propagation in the Earth's crust. The seismic velocity difference between the crust and mantle traps the waves on the surface, generating a Love wave. The plot bellow is the particle movement. The one above is the seismograph recorded at the station (blue triangle). Created using software Fatiando a Terra: fatiando.org Code to generate this simulati...
So well explained. Thank you
Do I have to manually navigate to my preferred location. Can't I search for it?
Could you explain what you mean by ‘scene’? Is it the area you selected or a particular size of area specific to the satellite in question?
It's basically an "image". But since it contains more than just red, green and blue then we end up calling it a scene.
Thanks for this useful video. Which dataset would you recommend if you need 10 to 50 m resolution?
Your best bet for public domain data of that resolution is Sentinel 2: sentinel.esa.int/web/sentinel/missions/sentinel-2 You can also try pansharpening Landsat data to 15m but this is fake resolution and only works for the visual bands: www.compgeolab.org/xlandsat/latest/pansharpen.html
Cloud cover is not showing in my usgs
Great vid, Leonardo. I appreciate it.
Gracias
Thank u so much man! It was really helpful! 🧡 Stay blessed! 🧡
Thank you very much, i am very appreciated!!
hi, thank you so much!
hi lewnardo would you support me to dawnload land sat 8 ethiopian data some part of two woreda that is gozamen and debre yeliyas
Could you do a tutorial on how to view the image as a tiff? I'm trying to create an aerial Timelapse of how the raw land looked but when I download it my Mac can't open the bundle product. I just want the tiff files of how the land looked without any modifications. The 48-74 imagery is perfect but when trying to get Landsat imagery it's a different beast. I'm so lost.
That's because the data come with each "color" band separately. So there isn't one that will show you what your eyes would see. For that, you have to combine the red, green, and blue bands into something called a "composite". You can do it with software like QGIS, which is free and open-source. If you know some Python coding, there is this library I wrote: www.compgeolab.org/xlandsat/ (I'm about to release v0.4 which should include a much better tutorial). I think you can also do this with Photoshop and the like but I've never done it. There should be plenty of tutorials if you search for "Landsat QGIS".
I’m trying to find close up imagery of my house and property, but all the imagery I find is of a very large areas. Is there a way to get imagery that is very close and zoomed in?
Not really. The resolution of Landsat is 30 meters a house is a pixel or less.
Your The Best. You Explain really well
Does landsat 9 have same radiometric correction algorithm with landsat 8?
The error says I do not have the required geotiff metadata format.
I have followed the steps but envi does not recognize my mlt.txt file. Can you help.
can you help me how to download ENVI software for free thanks
Lucid instructions!! Thanks
Thank you, this has been incredibly helpful!
Thanks so much for this - really simply explained and useful!
hey leonardo great video. what if i need just basic color? and digital elevation. do you know that formats i would need? thanks
Hi Sean! For digital elevation checkout opentopography.org For basic true color, you'd need to download the red, green, blue bands and create the composite yourself (I imagine any GIS software should have an option for this). Otherwise, there may be another webservice out there that provides this.
, congrats Leonardo. this is an amazing philosophy of teaching. I realize that it is rare to see a person like you, working collaboratively and aiming to grow together your peers. Very inspiring! Thanks!
Thank you
Thank you!
My search always comes back with No Results Found -- but the map is on my screen - I know there are results, why can't it load them???
Maybe check the filters for dates and cloud coverage, which could be excluding all results. There may also not be any level 2 data, only level 1.
you shoud open a count
Thank you
Sir kindly upload a video with regard to downloading of LANDSAT image of the year 1985.
That is Landsat 4
sir i want to work with you after finishing the phd
Hi, could you provide me the code of this ?
unable to access code. please help
Just posted my first video to TH-cam! This is a finite differences simulation of an SH wave propagating in the Earth's crust, generating a Love a wave. The simulation was made with Fatiando a Terra using this script: fatiando.readthedocs.org/en/latest/cookbook/seismic_wavefd_love_wave.html Simple as that!
Also added a Rayleigh wave simulation: th-cam.com/video/Mvd8FANLqy4/w-d-xo.html
