Laxey – Lady Isabella Waterwheel – Miners Houses – Milestone Shout Outs – Virtual Walking Tour
Laxey - Isle of Man - Lady Isabella Waterwheel - Miners Houses - Plus Milestone Shoutouts - Virtual Walking Tour
Starting point: #What3Words ///gear.certainty.plus
Welcome to Laxey Village and Lady Isabella, on the Isle of Man
Today I’m at the top of Laxey in the mining village area where I was hoping to give you a tour of the Laxey Wheel, known affectionally as Lady Isabella.
Unfortunately, as we found out it is closed on a Monday, so our walk today takes us as close as we can get, with a few added photos of past visits, why we also look at the River Laxey (Salmon River), the miners railway and Egg & Bacon Terrace miners houses.
Laxey is on the East Coast of the island and its famously the home of Great Laxey Wheel (named Lady Isabella after the governor’s wife), it was built in 1854 to pump water from the Laxey mines and is an impressive structure with a 22m diameter, thought of as a Victorian feat of engineering, today it is the largest working watermill in the world.
After discovering it was closed, we take a wander round this area getting some lovely shots of the wheel as we go, along our way we will pass The Salmon Lake which is now an events centre but at one time fed the Ceer’s Cornmill which has been restored into a lovely café with its own reconstructed non-working waterwheel called Barbara.
We see the confluence of Laxey and Glen Mooar, which we then follow as the Laxey (or Salmon River in Old Norse) for a quick visit to the Mines Laxey Railway (unfortunately also closed) and finish our walk on Egg and Bacon Terrace, a nickname given to Dumbells Row miners houses after the residents starting selling visitors food from their homes.
A lovely sunny walk today around this beautiful area of Laxey
Enjoy a Virtual Walking Tour Experience with your new friend Country Mouse walks.

I think Partney was once bigger because the church is big. The size of the church indicates the size of original villages of course

Some of the houses were built with stone filched from the castle after its seige by the parliamentarians. Many of the oldest cottages were of mud and stud so no longer there as this was not as sturdy as stone. Thhere are some very fine georgian homes though of brick and probably a few earlier ones. Paupers Row looks to be of stone from the castle and there is a house with more ornamental relics originally from the castle.

My grandparents lived in Firsby, I spent a lot of my childhood there, my mum and all her siblings were born there. My uncle worked on the railway and my grandmother had the cafe on the station, I believe my grandad, as well as being a dairy farmer, was a special policeman.😊

Hi, just came across your video. I lived in Firsby from 1947 until 1962. I remember the very busy railway station. The house you thought was the hotel was the Railway Hotel serving Batemans "good honest ales". The houses just after the hotel were built on what was the Firsby United football field. Thanks for bringing back some good memories.

I miss the Joseph banks conservatory... I remember walking around it as a kid when it rained and we were at the park. There were also some fishtanks with exotic fish in there! Shame it was just replaced with car parking. The car is king, even is what are supposed to be recreational spaces.

the old chapel you said is being converted is actually st lukes school, it was never a chapel.. the church used to stand behind the graveyard but collapsed in the 1800s after they built a tower onto it but it was to big and caused the whole church to collapse.. we lived in the cottage next door to the old school which was called st lukes school house... when we renovated the cottage we found lots of intersting things in the garden... part of the garage was the old toilets for the school... the school shut in 1907 and was left to fall into disrepair...
