Is It Worth Buying a SKS in 2024!
The SKS.
Known for being one of the most reliable semi-automatic rifles of history, the SKS has landed itself in the hands of millions of sport shooters, hunters and collectors since it's creation in 1945. Despite being massed produced, these rifles have increased in value drastically over the last 4 years.
And that is why,
In today's video I ask you all the questions, "Is it still worth buying a SKS in 2024?"!
During the video I will cover some historical points about the rifle and I will give you all some insight on the current value of these rifles, the ammunition it fires, the 7.62x39 cartridge, along with my final opinion on if you should be purchasing a Mosin in the year 2024!
Be sure to comment your opinion!

Gave one of the Nagants to my brother in law. I love them, very nostalgic. I would say, for someone who wants a "Mosin Nagant" for whatever personal reason, you should be able to eventually get one in 2024 at about $400 to 500 dollars. Unless the price is well under $600.00 I would say no but then I'm a cheapskate. At the range I saw a Canadian soldier peering through a spotting scope, making notes in a notebook before carefully placing a reload in the receiver. Curious as to what target rifle he was shooting I moved aside only to see what appeared to be a stock SKS. I asked him what kind of groups he was getting and he said with the right reloads he could keep groups just under half an inch at 100m. He'd had the trigger worked on as well as the stock. A buddy's father was a soldier in Vietnam and he said that during time off he'd take a friend with him down to the creek each with a couple captured SKS rifles and ammo. They'd shoot one until it was smoking hot, toss it in the creek, shoot the other until it was hot, toss it in the creek, collect the first one and continue going back and forth between the rifles until the ammo crates were empty usually without a hiccup.

    • @LakesnWoodsOutdoors
      @LakesnWoodsOutdoors 7 วันที่ผ่านมา

      @@kenlansing1216 Sounds about right! I think with the right loads you can get excellent accuracy out of any rifle, including those deemed inaccurate, I think the real lack in accuracy when it comes to an SKS is the inconsistencies in bulk surplus ammo and the fact that many bores have been shot to hell and are extremely worn.

  • @tominmo8865

    Recommendation for all shooters and rifles: get a Wheeler Fat Wrench (in-lb torque wrench). Use it for torquing down the action screws. Experiment with different torque settings to see what setting gives the most accuracy when target shooting. My Savage 64 likes 20 in-lb. Think about getting a Mcarbo trigger spring kit to get a lighter trigger, and also do some fine sanding to smooth out rough contact points, including on the magazine front edge. My trigger is under 3 lb, according to my digital trigger gauge. I also have 10/22s, and in many ways prefer the Savage 64. Takedown is much less hassle, especially the bolt, and it's nice to be able to remove the barrel for cleaning it from the rear. This gun is an amazing value compared to a 10/22.

    Chinese SKS doesn’t have any material differences. The nonsense about stamped or aluminum receivers is false. These are machined, steel receivers. There was only a small production, that came out of China which was produced with stamped receivers, but it’s extremely rare. Also, the Chinese perfected the SKS. Depending on the year of manufacture, the Chinese made models can be by far superior to the Russian models. The Russian made SKS, and some others that came out of Europe, came without a chrome barrel - which made them by far inferior when compared to most Chinese counterparts.

    • @LakesnWoodsOutdoors
      @LakesnWoodsOutdoors 8 วันที่ผ่านมา

      @@helterskelter156 Great information! My initial research lead me to believe the majority were stamped and/or aluminum! I was coming across many sources saying that, as well as some specifically knocking Chinese steel as being significantly more “brittle” and “malleable” than Russian steel, quite frankly I don’t think either are necessarily better than the other in terms of steel. I also think the Chinese SKS price has been inflated due to the cost of the Russian SKS, just from my experiences of firing these rifles and being around many who owned them, I have heard of many more inconsistencies and machining imperfections on the Chinese rifles. I am sure both are excellent for what their intended design is and they’re both going to get the job done for everyone at a fraction of the price of everything else on the market.

    • @kenlansing1216
      @kenlansing1216 7 วันที่ผ่านมา

      The Russian SKS's were only made without chrome lined barrels for two years: 1950 and 1951 I believe. The Chinese held themselves to the same quality standards as the Russians which is not to say that they didn't sometimes exceed them.

    • @helterskelter156
      @helterskelter156 7 วันที่ผ่านมา

      @@kenlansing1216 The Chinese made way more SKS rifles than the Russians. Russian SKS was made without a chromed barrel till 1951, although many refurbished ones had their barrels chromed, before they were exported, later on. To illustrate how good the Chinese got at producing the SKS, one can look at the French Tickler - the final batch of SKS produced in China, and the fit & finish on these rifles is second to none. The most refined version I ever got to own and handle of the SKS rifle. Sure, there could be some outliers- other SKS rifles made outside China that are excellent, and Chinese lade models that were far from perfect, but as far as consistency and largest volume of incredibly quality - the Chinese had it dialed in.

We used to get these rifles for around $125 to $150 US Dollars and we could get the "spam cans" of ammo for almost nothing. That all changed when Barrack Obama & Joe Biden was elected as president and vice president in 2008 and was sworn into office in 2009. Here in Virginia we really had a tough time with Governor Ralph Northam in office. Even law enforcement had a tough time getting firearms and was limited to how many they could buy.

    My internet is broken! I am suddenly flooded with content from people that are demonically possessed with flawed logic. Just because the suppliers are not giving you free ammo and no longer has an endless railroad filled with train cars of MN rifles does not negate the value or usefulness of the rifle. 7.62x54 factory ammo is no more expensive than 30-06, .308 or your long off the surplus shelves .303 British. Just because you can no longer shoot tin cans all day for $5 Canadian does not make it a useless product. If you want to shoot tin cans buy a .22. If you want to shoot big game with Serbian soft point your MN 91/30 will do fine at a reasonable price.

      There's value in the Mosin for those who collect, but as a plinking rifle or hunting rifle there are several rifles that overtake it in quality, the Mosin is outdated and just because it's reliable and can be used excessively does not necessarily make it a better firearm, I think the major factor you're missing is simply how many other options majority of people would prefer to choose. Sure 7.62x54r is roughly the same value as your standard NA cartridges, so why wouldn't you go with the more advanced, modern and more readily available cartridge, with more versatile factory loads and variations and I will not include .303 into that bunch because it has been extremely overpriced in comparison to 7.62x54r, .308 and .30-06 and yes the Mosin is more than capable of taking big game but that is more caliber specific than the rifle itself, the rifle is heavy and longer than your standard hunting rifles that I would have mentioned in the video and if you want to take game at longer distances you will likely need to invest into drilling/tapping for mounts or find some sort of means to mount an optic. PPU SP ammunition is at a reasonable price but it is not consistently available and is certainly not available everywhere, particularly where I live there has not been a box of 7.62x54R SP or any hunting load for about a year, can I order it online? Yes, unfortunately once it's been purchased online then I have to pay the typical shipping fees + dangerous goods and depending on where I buy it from my shipping will range for $30-$70 on top of the $35-$40 for the box of ammo. Just because someone has an opinion doesn't mean their logic is flawed. I do understand your point of view though and appreciate you sharing it!

    We used to get very good Nagants for $80-$90 apiece. If you can find a really good one, $150 or so probably isn't a bad deal. We got a few, customized a few with magazines, modern body, scopes, bipods and so forth. $200 is a stretch. Anything more? Not a chance. Kept a short handful, nice pre-WW2 cherries and a 'sniper'. I'll just keep 'em.

    Who stop right there these rifles are still 100% viable in this time. Let me expand a pone this. 1 7.62x54R is still out there the Yugoslavia M70 surplus ammo is very affordable a creat of 880 rounds go's for between $389 to $499 us dollars. 2. They are fantastic rifles for hunting, survival, and just for target practice. 3. My final point, if you own a mosin then you either appreciate the usability of this rifle and love having one or your mosin is just a safe queen and never gets used. Don't even be afraid to use these rifles they are made of stout stuff and the barrels are good with proper care, up to 10,000 rounds going through them. I hope this helps everyone out there considering buying one, and the market isn't as bad as he's saying I'm finding them in my area for $399 and under.

    • @LakesnWoodsOutdoors
      @LakesnWoodsOutdoors 26 วันที่ผ่านมา

      @@rickyjones7013 I agree the rifles are still viable but it’s hard to compete with modern rifles that are significantly better for a more inexpensive price that shoot more inexpensive non-corrosive ammo, I also agree that you’d buy one of these rifles more so for the appreciation factor more than anything and in regards to the market pricing, it’s going to be different every where, you may likely be in a state where prices are more inexpensive because there’s more rifles to go around, you’ll notice in other comments that people say in their respective state that Mosins are worth even more than I am saying in this video while others are less, if you’re in Canada you can definitely find some rifles for $500 but anything less is a good price.
