What charger are you using?
I have a similar setup. My compressor has been overheating since we got into the low 90's. It does not take advantage of the condenser cooling fan, so I am contemplating a separate cooling fan for the compressor. But first, I am going to try removing some of the R134a refrigerant as the static pressure is around a 100 psi, which is 20 pounds higher than I get on an automotive system. What kind of pressures are you running DadVanture?
I don’t remember, I’m sorry if I ever hook the gauges back up I will come comment for you!
You gotta be in the van?? Your body heat will make a difference
That’s a good point. I just got it up and running and I am testing the waters before trusting it fully! I’ll get a good video of me camping in hot weather soon! I appreciate the comments!
I was thinking about buying a pump and tying it into the factory rear ac unit. I would mount it and the condenser underneath just like that. I would be fun to experiment with.
Tag me if you do it! That sounds awesome… when I first started dreaming about this project i was first researching the EV platforms so I can pull a 12v out of a junkyard on an old Prius or something but for 700 bucks this was super simple to get installed
Julie and I want to get rid of our Class C RV and get an RV Van. A smaller RV is much easier to travel in and maintain temp
I love my van!
My Bluetooth packed up after 6 months, and trying to get Renogy UK to fix or replace is a complete nightmare. I won’t be touching Renogy again based on the customer service experience.
I’m sorry to hear that man! So far I’ve been happy with the chins and it’s way cheaper
Something seems off with the math. 33 amps should get you double that runtime around 6 hours for 200ah battery unless that battery’s BMS is cutting you off way early. Thanks for the video!
I agree I’m doing another test today to see what’s up. I think because only one of the batteries is Bluetooth that’s all I’m getting through the app? Is there a way to measure if I’m actually charging both batteries?
How do I fix a leak with oil all under the bottom from something leaking .
I’d try and wipe everything clean and find the source of the leak, then replace that part!
Your multiple camera angles are great. I don't have the patience for that.
It’s taken time to figure out for sure lol and a lot of money in camera equipment. Does the GoPro on the back of your old KLR work? I have a bunch of accessories for that GoPro but mine broke and I’ve got a different camera now
@@DadVanture Yes, it works but I didn't use it on this trip. I had to leave the KLR in Fairbanks Alaska. I'm on a new Honda 750 Transalp. Hard to say "Goodbye" to the KLR, but it was done
"You could literally put a tent stake in the ground..." 😲😲😲
Been awhile since I posted this video.. what are you referring to? Use a timestamp!
@DadVanture 2:20 but I'm literally just playing with you.😅 It's an old guy aversion to the way young people abuse the word "literally". I did upvote you though...😎👍
I'm an HVAC company owner, if you are drawing 440 watts you are only getting 4,770 BTUs out of that unit.
Interesting! I appreciate the insight!
What's the maximum wattage you can manage to get it to? They claim they'll pull 80 amps full power. If it will, then it's closing in on 12,000 BTUs..
@@Bryan-Hensley I’ll do some more tests and post another video soon on a camp out!
@@DadVantureI saw a video somewhere that they were drawing a little over 70 amps.
The 24v versions will get you much higher btu’s.
Man i almost left cause of the accent lol good thing i waited.
Haha All the ones I watched before making this video were Australian dudes
what do you mean by binding? does the steering get stuck or just feel tight? My power steering whines and I feel it get tight a bit, but not to complete stop
Front and rear tires get super grippy, like the AWD is engaged when it shouldn’t be
Obviously every time you open door you let out all the cool air
Valid point lol....Still did pretty good in my opinion. This was probably some of the worst conditions it could be expected to work in it was so much more comfortable inside the van than outside
Use this unit in my ford transit extended high roof mounted very similar. Been using it about 3 months, so far so good.
I love it so far!
What's your maximum wattage or amperage you've noticed? I'm trying to calculate the true BTU but I'm having trouble finding anyone who is drawing the full wattage it should be pulling.
@Bryan-Hensley 450W 35A is what I remember, I'll be taking it out this weekend and post it in my video
No good for Florida high humidity
Why is that?
@@arriagada1957 It's an air conditioner, it removes moisture like any ac.
Having some window covers on the outside might help with the inside temp more, they do make them for van and RV windshields. I have been wanting to see more people testing these as I’m thinking of one for my camper so I don’t need shore power. Thanks for the test video.
I think just parking in some shade would be the best option. I wanted to do this test to see how it would cool down in the direct sunlight.. but Def the shade is the way to go
how about at night when you want to sleep? will 200ah be enough to keep it a cozy 70-75F to sleep all night with? you may need better insulation also and a way to vent out the heat before you start the AC.
Yea! In my 4th of July video last week we slept all night at I think it was 74 when I woke up and the outside read 111. Pretty impressive. I'm opposed to insulating due to limited space and mold potential as I camp in the winter mostly in this van and my webasto is plenty warm. I also have a Maxx air fan in the roof! All great suggestions! Thank you
How many batteries bank did You use for this? if You have the batteries and solar panels, it would last longer.
I have 200 amp hours of lithium
@@DadVanture Thanks man.
Specs on your battery
200ah chins lithium
@@DadVanture thanks what brand
The brand is CHINS
@@DadVanture thank you
Tropi-cool Henrys on roof will help
It's a white hightop with a gelcoat already! Great suggestion though
what is this product?
It's an air conditioner
What is the AC's btu? Do they sell 48v split AC?
This one is 8875BTU. I know they make 48v systems. Look up 48v minisplit on amazon
May be better to get an 24v and one or two 48v to 24v buck converters
@vladimus9749 it would be more efficient, but I already have a 12v system built and wasn't going to change everything out or worry about converters I have a shore power hookup if times get rough I can always find a campsite with electrical
Were you concerned about the compressor being mounted layed over on its side?
No this one states it can be mounted vertical or horizontal
@@DadVanture I bought a similar unit and mounted it under my Ford E350. It didn't come with much information. (But I only paid $500 all in.) My condenser is mounted at a 30° angle under the left rear quarter panel, and the compressor hangs below it to emulate the original configuration. I 💕 love it!
@SurfingFLA nice I have the ability to cut down the aluminum sleeves over the bolt and slope mine too, but I was In A rush. I noticed while driving it wasn't cooling much. Did you slope it facing the front or rear?
@@DadVanture It slopes to the side from the bottom of the vehicle frame up to the floor of the body. It's on an aluminum structure that is attached to the vehicle frame with J-bolts hooked around the edges. The skirt of the body hides it. I damaged my rotator cuff holding the compressor up into different proposed mounting positions. It took months for that to heal up.
@SurfingFLA man I know how you feel. Back on my Ocotillo wells video near Thanksgiving I compressed and ruptured a disk and have had intense sciatica it hasn't been easy doing van stuff but it keeps me sane. I had to install this little bit by little bit
GREAT VID. THANKS
Thanks for an excellent basic test of the AC unit. You have many steps available to improve the comfort, and effectiveness of the unit. First, insulation of the van if possible. Second, curtain/block off the front cab area. Maybe hang blanket so only the sleeping area gets the most cooling. Then test again. Third, place window reflectix on the Exterior of the windows. Or, have a LONG roll of 48" wide reflectix, wrap around the exterior from the roof gutter down. Consider painting the exterior arctic white, if summer/regular daily heat will be your major discomfort. Can you put enough solar on the roof, and portable panels, to pull 300 watts. Remember, roof panels will help block/prevent sun from heating the roof. Can you make a cover to keep the AC condenser clean during winter/not in use season? If you are in a snow event, will road snow build up/damage the condenser? Can the condenser fan grill prevent most road debris from damaging the unit?
I appreciate your comment! Those are all amazing ideas! I used the blanket divider for the cab on my last campout! I was planning on getting portable solar so I can park the van in the shade and set the panels I. The sun.. what are your thoughts on that idea?
@@DadVanture check out CheapRV living recent episode he tested portable panels.
Keep the doors shut may help too
@@johnnyreb8030 good point haha
Sweet! How big is your battery bank? I've been thinking about this.
200ah lithium!
Great idea, but where are your solar panels?
I don't run any currently. In 5hr future I will probably get some collapsible ones I can put out in the sun while I park in the shade but I needed to know how much power it pulls
Well, the car seems does not have much of insulation to begin with.
You are right! It has zero insulation
That is genius to put it under the van. I would never have thought about that!
I appreciate that! Maybe a little dirty, but I like how stealth it is tucked up under there
Will the outdoor unit get filthy from road grime?
Probably but it's in a good location to wash off
Stoked I found this. I have been going through same issue. I purchased mine June 28th, 2022. How about yours? I only used it on a couple trips. I was chasing my tail assuming it was me mainly b/c Renogy assured me it was not the battery. I put it storage mode and haven't used it since. I am curious if our manufacturing dates are close.
pretty close I don't remember exactly but my warranty was registered 7-22 id try the heat gun trick and watch the cell balance. if it cuts out early send it to them for testing don't bother sending screen shots and such let them test it
Great way to stay cool with the firetrucks spraying the crowd! Can you tell me what kind of AC you installed and what kind of power you are running it off of please?
It was! I'm working on an AC video now but I got it off amazon I searched 12v minisplit the brand is nekkpoka? Something like that I'll have the amazon search and the product I chose in that video! It runs on 12v I have 200AH of lithium batteries and yesterday for my video test it ran for just under 4 hours in 100° weather with no insulation and the van in direct sunlight!
@@DadVanture Thank you so much! We will Check that out. We bought the 4x4 awning after seeing one of your videos. We had a GMC Savana at the time. Now we have upgraded to a high top Ram and have to figure out if we can still use it. Baby steps I guess! Thanks again.

Is that an abbreviation?
Do the people in the parade throw water balloons back? Oops, I asked that question too soon. I saw you get hit. MAN DOWN
Yea we got nailed a few times!
I always had good experience with Renogy. But my latest battery failed. Using all their inverter, mppt charge controller and they still said it’s my fault for improper charging. I was able too get it back to turn on since it went into some kind of safe storage mode. Im gonna order the Epoch 460amp battery instead now.
It's a bummer to experience such poor quality when everyone touted them online as being so good. I've not had a problem with either of my chins batteries yet
460 Amp hours? How much is that going for? Sounds perfect I just installed a 12v minisplit AC that runs off the house batteries. Lasted about 4 hours on full blast with my 200ah bank
@@DadVanture they just had a sale on it. Im sure they will have another for Labor Day and then again black Friday. But right now its $1,300
So you slide the strings through the front of awning and by the car and then the plastic hooks on the poles? Also floor goes in last? I wish there was a set up video
I can work on a setup video, but yes that's the just of it! It slides in the side of the vechile first then there is a large zipper on the front of the awning and plastic clips on the sides. After the first use the floor stays zipped onto the room unless it's super dusty then I'll unzip it, beat the dust off, then Re Zip and fold it back up for storage and it's already attached when I set it up the next time
Hope that works out for you. I did not know you could tap in to the fuel tank for those heaters. Thanks!
Just make sure you get the one for gasoline and not diesel its been working like a charm for a year or so now
Planning to put a Fiberine Van top on a 1998 Chevy Astro Van that I purchased. Great video!
How tall are you? If your at least 5'8 I'd go with the 24 inch.. the 16 is a little small for me at 5'11. Totally manageable though. I have no problem with mine but in hindsight the extra head room would have been nice!
@@DadVanture I'm 5'8, how far is that from the van floor to the ceiling? I thinking I might do the 30" Super Camper top.
Very Cool! 😎 Thanks!
No problem! Stay tuned! I just installed a 12v AC unit that runs off my house batteries! I found it on Amazon and it's designed for semi trucks to stay cool without idling their motor! Just got it charged with refrigerant and will be testing it this week!

Bye bye 👋 😂 So sick dude
Hey there, good video. Dunno if you have fixed the door drip issue where the awning meets the van. I figured that a pool noodle is about the right fit in between. It redirects the water to the sides of the awning, reduces the drips immensely.
That's an awesome idea! I havnt fixed it yet lol
How did you get to the line on the back of the pump? I have an ‘02 AWD and I can’t get anything to get to that nut.
It was terrible! Your motor mounts might be shot? You might be able to jack up the motor and give yourself some room
Complaint after complain after complaint about Renogy Customer Support and that damn company never fixes their problem. This is why I'll look elsewhere for anything solar or battery related, a company that doesn't fix their problems doesn't care about their problems and that's not the kind of company I want to support.
Agreed
Yooo man I need some help! Nothing at all works when I flip my switch on the ac even when I try defrost. The rear works but that’s a different switch then the main ac
Have you checked the fuse?
The noodle should go last, for 30 sec and cut the heat! :D
