How to buy pro camera gear on a small budget
I have a question. I noticed that you really like the R3, so much that you purchased another one. I can understand that as it is such an amazing Camera. Being that the R3 has 24 megapixel resolution compared to R5 which has 45 megapixels. Is the lower MP not something that is a concern for you & your wife when shooting wildlife ? Do you shoot landscape as well ?
We are very happy with the resolution and the mp is not an issue. In fact having huge files would be difficult for us especially as our wildlife travels often involve returning with up to 20,000 images. The results are absolutely fine for us and we can always use Topaz to upscale and improve quality. We are not landscape photographers.
You might make money, but PicFair is charging you £9.00 per month. So in fact with you selling 2 images. You still have made no money and probably lost money.
Hi Ken are you still using this platform as of May 2024. Thanks. Great work
Hi Martin I still have a number of images on the site and get an occasional sale. To be honest my other commitments with press and my wedding photography have consumed me lately and I have not had a chance to upload more content. You CAN make money with stock photography….but sadly not a lot.
Dear Mr. Hadfield, Thank you very much for this in depth video about picfair. I have been playing with the idea of using it for some time now, but wasn't sure if its another scam or not. I guess I will give it a go. thanks to you 😊
can you link your store?
I have my personal website displaying my wildlife images and I simply embedded a link on the website which takes the viewer directly to my images
Thank you for sharing. John 3:16; Romans 10:9 KJV
Fantastic vid, thanks
Thank you!
Hi Ken. Thanks for the work involved in producing this video, I’m at a crossroads at present with a similar predicament. I’m not as young as I was, and with a back issue ( which is with me for life ), and for the last 2 years, a problem with my knees ( for which an operation will hopefully resolve if I ever get to the top of the NHS waiting list). I have an R6, and my dream lens the 500/4. The weight definitely makes it difficult, that’s for sure, but it seems almost impossible to take a bad photo with that lens. I came from a 7D with the Mk1 100-400, so I’m used to the flexibility of a zoom, I used the 500/4 on my crop body ( very often with a 1.4x TC ) and the one thing I thought was essential for me was reach. Amazingly I never missed the reach of the crop, maybe because the 500/4 hit focus better, giving me more keepers which offset the difference. I mainly use the 500/4 with a Black Rapid strap as my walk around set up, the IBIS on the R6 now allowed me to ditch the tripod/monopod and shoot without having to rely on a support to steady my arms. However, is the focus on the 100-500 better, not necessarily faster, but better to attain focus especially using eye detect which is what I bought the R6 for in the first place. Again, can a set-up with a more accurate focus negate the difference between the prime and zoom giving better results, and as a bonus be easier to carry around too. Years ago I used to carry my whole set up as a walk around, steel tripod, 7D body, 100-400, 17-55/2.8, 70-200/2.8, 10-20 UWA, sometimes if out walking with the kids in their prams/buggies I’d never take the backpack off my shoulders because it was so heavy to use. So, I bought the Fuji X-Pro1 and a few small prime lens to use as my family days out which transformed my photography. So I’m aware that the R6 c/w the 100-500 could do the same, but as with my previous worries about loss of reach, now I’m concerned about loss of aperture, and the ability to shoot wide open at F4 instead of F7.1 How do you feel about the loss in aperture here in the UK, and the challenges of a lack of light the UK gives us now you’ve had the chance to compare. Sorry for the long winded question, I just wanted to give you the background of my experience so far 😊
Sorry for the late reply. Somehow your post did not flag up and I have just noticed it. To be totally honest I do very little shooting in the uk so the aperture has not been an issue in Africa and the USA. However the combination of the R3 and the 100-500 worked very well in the limited shooting I have done in the UK . Together with excellent post processing tools I have been able to shoot and process to my satisfaction to date. The lesser weight makes travel and shooting easy and I have mostly been able to work without a tripod on many occasions. The focusing is excellent but I’m not a fan of eye control. I tend to scan around looking for subjects coming near do the focus point is all over the place.
Watching from the netherlands, i loved your video and voice over! Looking forward to the next one!
Thank you. Trying to find time to edit the next 4 episodes delayed because of a very difficult house move.
@@BETTERPHOTOGRAPHYCHANNEL we can wait😀 and look forward to it! Hope the move did work out for you!
INTRO MUSIC way too loud ... all good after that
Thank you. Sorry about the loud music. This was one of my first videos and it’s been a steep learning curve.
Very helpful thanks.
Glad it was of use
Hey Ken. I live in Pretoria and was on holiday at KNP and we got chatting at one of the trading post shops. Nice to see the finished product. Elaine 😁
Hi Elaine. Great to hear from you! I posted this a while ago as the first of 5 episodes covering our entire trip. Unfortunately a difficult house move has delayed me putting out the next episode as the renovations have only just started to clear after almost 3 months. Hopefully by the end of this month I will have the time and capability to upload the next episode so hang in there as I have some great footage to share. Glad you like it and thank you for your support.
Lovely video sir, thanks for sharing your experiences with us ❤❤ stay safe
Thank you, I will
Thanks, I was about to dump £45
What a great video, with some smashing points. This Man is very knowledgeable and informative. I must call into question, your choice of leg position, @ 06:18? I would say and use, one leg downhill, as when two legs are downhill, it is the natural tendency of a tripod to want to ‘pivot’ around the uphill leg.as the two legs have more mass ‘downhill.’ Just my experience. Of course, YMMV. Stay safe, cheers, and Happy Shooting. The Pheasants shots were outstanding, as were all of the images.
Thank you for your kind comments. I am lucky to live very close to open moorland that is home to many pheasants. I even get them in my garden.
Just lovely. Thank you
Thank you too!
does the r3 have a 1.6 crop option like the r6mk2, i have the r6mk2 and regulary use the 1.6 crop to get that bit closer and really cant tell the difference in image quality when not using it to just cropping in post.
Hi. Im not aware of this option but to be fair it’s not something I would use . More information may be available on the Canon website.
Nice video. Hopefully I'll be a 100-500 RF owner very soon. Just one minor complaint: the shutter noise preceding every image is annoying. Lots of other TH-camrs use it, but in my opinion it's an unnecessary distraction.
Thanks for the compliment and your complaint is noted for future videos.
Just wondering what camera setup you use ?
Hi Michelle I use a Canon R 3 with a 100-55 lens. A go pro 8 for car and general filming and make good use of my iphone 15 for camera facing shots.
Thank you, I have the Canon R7 and we are heading back home to Kruger next August and staying in Berg en Dal, Lower Sabie and Satara. Looking to video a lot more this time but will be doing FHD as not technical enough to learn 4K and colour grading and all that.@@BETTERPHOTOGRAPHYCHANNEL
👏👏👏
Thank you!
I have 3 only use Canon adaptor never cheap. All the best
Same to you! Expensive but great quality photography
I own the Canon 500mm F4 IS version 2 and I can tell you.....I will never part with her !!!!
It was a matter of practicality for me after difficulties with weight on airlines plus a move to more video production which is almost impossible with a 500mm prime.
Thanks Ken for the select and mask tutorial. Very clear and so much better than some American whizzing through at breakneck speed. Do you have a tutorial on reducing halos please ?
Thank you. Not done anything about halo reduction but will consider for the future
Thanks for this! Do you have an update with the lens adapter?
Hi. I am happy to say that I am more than happy with the camera and all of the associated equipment.i have just spent 22 days photographing and filming in Kruger Park for my video series on the Kruger experience and I am delighted with the results for both video and photography.
That's great! Glad to hear that you are enjoying it and that it is passing your tests. Debating on this front on whether or not to jump for an R3 or continue to wait for the rumoured R1.@@BETTERPHOTOGRAPHYCHANNEL
Video yang bagus
Thank you
I’m brand spanking new to feeding all these gorgeous and stunning creatures that we all enjoy watching and feeding. I have several acres of wetlands at the back portion of my property and I’m amazed everyday when I’ve got a new bird that shows up. I think I have an advantage because of those protected wooded wetlands, I’ve had some really rare birds show up and the woodpeckers are my favorite. We had a nest of Pileated and Northern Flickers in our side yard this past spring/summer. What a huge treat!! I don’t know anything about photography except to push the button when your object is in frame so I’ve got a ton to learn. I have a screened in porch, I can sit out there all day talking to my family, take pictures and just sit there peacefully enjoying the birds as they come to visit. They really don’t seem to mind if someone is out there and will usually gather around when we’re filling the feeders and bird baths. I just ordered a new lens for my camera so I can get a closer shot of these stunning beauty’s. I’m sure I’ll have lots of questions but I have a few days before it comes so I’m going to learn as much as possible beforehand.
Lucky you ! Sounds like a perfect location. Hope you enjoy lots of great photography
What an exceptional video! Thank you so much.
Thank you very much. At least 4 more episodes to come.
Thank you
Amazing looks a great place.
It really is! And I have several more episodes to share soon.
A fabulous chronicle of your first days in the park, thanks! We just finished a shorter visit to Kruger, with just 4 days spread across three camps, ending in Berg en Dal. I took over 4,000 photos, your video is an excellent complement to that. Can’t wait for the next installment!
Thank you….Sorting through images will take some time for you but the memories will come flooding back with each image.
How did you fare with the 100-500 you and your wife? Glad you arrived safe, can’t wait to watch more!
My wife stayed with her 500mm prime and all footage shown in the video was captured with my 100-500 which I found very versatile with quality outstanding.
Excellent job Ken some brilliant shots.
Many thanks!
Loved it! Watched it with my 2 Golden Retrievers Maggie and Odin. They watched the full video.
That’s great. Thanks for your support and a big paw shake to Maggie & Odin

Awesome, can't wait for the next one 😁
Thanks George… lots of good things to come.
That was great to watch.
Thank you ....4 more to come..

@@BETTERPHOTOGRAPHYCHANNEL thank you I am new to selling my work I love talking Photography and a friend told me about this site
Good luck!
How long does it take for the MODERATION IN PROGRESS take please
Usually 1 to 4 days.
You seem to have specialized in wildlife photography, something I did for many years - unfortunately one of the worst genres when it comes to stock sales - the wildlife market was saturated many years ago and sales for me peaked around 2014, many other photographers experienced the same. There is still an income to be made but in relative terms it's around 20/30% of what it was 20 years ago. The fact is that photographers themselves are mainly to blame for supply the micro stock platforms and cause the earnings to implode. One more point is that you need thousands of images on any one site before you can gauge any sort of success, preferably with an agent that offers exclusive imagery only.
Good points. Regardless of the number of uploads needed … even if I had the time to upload and edit tens of thousands of images and were selling hundreds a week I could not stomach the pittance offered. I am now done with stock photography for good.
I am surprised this video has not gotten more thumbs up. I learned a lot in it!
Thank you
Have you had any sales since those first two?
A few but not enough to continue uploading it’s just not worth the time and effort. I will be posting a short update soon explaining that I have no further interest in giving my energy to ANY of these sites. Very disappointed after what I thought was a good start.
Update: you can't sell with the lite version
.
Hi, thank you for this informations. Did you make another sales and do you suggest Picfair Plus Plan. I used to have an account but I didn't try Picfair Plus, is this worth to upgrade?
Hi, I'm looking at Picfair and possibly one or two others. It's been a while since you did this video, where you seem positive and said you would give us an update. Can you let me know if your sales have improved now since then?
Good video. The RF 100-500mm is shockingly good. I hardly touch my RF 70-200mm f/2.8. I should probably sell the RF 70-200mm f/2.8 and get the RF 100-300mm f/2.8, but I need to give that zoom a solid run for a week or so to be sure its worth the outlay as I worry - a lot - that it will end up "sitting there" next to the RF 100-500mm.
Totally agree!
What would be better is if Topaz would actually support their own Studio2 that we invested in. It's a great basic editor outside of a bad crop tool which is the only thing that needed work. I did curves, contrast, exposure, etc, then ran denoise and sharpen as plugins. If they would just tweek Studios a little, and let us run this as a plugin, it would be what us long time users have wanted for years.
Hopefully they will develop something soon!
This being said. The actual AI to this Photo AI, is impressive. It truly is a dream come true. If I could just have this as a plugin to an updated crop tool in Studios 2, I might cry... It's impressive a so fast. After the 10th image, I had a trust in it that I just knew it was doing what I wanted.
@@countrylapi9245 Its been a game changer for me.
Great video Ken, some very good advice especially on the malaria tablets, I have taken them every time I have been to Kenya, you don't mention dust? on the Kenya safaris they are very dusty and I keep my gear under a large towel while on the drives.
Yes, dust can be a problem when using the dirt roads. You can often see dust kicking up from traffic approaching so I just pull up the windows for a minute or two. I also try not to change lenses out in the field if possible.
@@BETTERPHOTOGRAPHYCHANNEL we didn't have the luxury of windows on our safari vehicles 😂 but good advice again, by the way I have a week holiday coming up in October and I have a couple of nights booked near the Washington Wetlands after watching you're video I thought I really need to visit.
The benefit of self drive …however you are likely to get better sightings with a guide. Washington is good to practice your skills. Best time to visit the hides on wader lake is breeding season April/ May…but there should be plenty of wildfowl to photograph.
I live in South Africa and go to Kruger regularly. I use a microfibre towel to cover my gear with. That way the gear can sit on my lap for easy access, and the towel is big enough to cover it or wrap it, while being lightweight enough not to make me hot.
I wonder if I can get some confirmation on something; if topaz photo AI, can indeed, as they say in the marketing, remove dust, and scratches, artifacts from a dirty lens and/or filter, in addition to various forms of noise and blur. yes?`no?
Topaz May not remove artefacts and scratches as it’s marketed as a sharpening, noise reduction and upscaling tool which I have found incredibly good. Your best option would be to use the link in the description, download and try a fully functional copy free of charge. If you like it you can purchase with a $40.00 discount but only until 22nd September. Let me know how you get on.
Nice
Thanks
