You can make a shitload of money if you toured as a tribute band, as this is probably the best and closest thing to VU any fan could ever hope for. Seriously impressive.
One of my favourite VU tunes ever! Excellent job!
You really understood the assignment mate. Your covers are bang on, cheers!🍻
❤❤❤
Great breakdown mate, and nice Lou dupe on the vocals.
All the problems the band had around the release of the record are classic Stasi type stuff. In the US it is called MKUltra. This is a line of inquiry I’ve been investigating around My Bloody Valentine (decouples of The VU if ever there was one) and the recording and release of Loveless. The common refrain is drug addiction is at the heart of these kinds of issues but keep in mind MKUltra spent a lot of money investigating addiction and weaponized it. I think the common thread is both bands explore using sound to alter peoples brainwaves (intentionally by MBV and maybe unintentionally (never stated) by VU) and sexuality. Those are the primary way the programs mess with their victims. Plus they both have cool initials VU and MBV! (That part is a joke, the rest I’m dead serious about :) this three part film is so awesome too. A real artistic achievement. Thanks 🌊🌊🏄♀️🏄♂️
Another highly enjoyable installment. Thanks so much for doing these. I was just happy the Mo Tucker doc you did existed at all and now we have this! All of this stuff is way better than just about any professional music doc I’ve seen. The passion is immense, yet somehow understated. Kind of a perfect homage to the Velvets.
This is unreal, man. Thanks!
Go Mo!
Until I watched this, I has no idea how much Sterling really shaped the sound of the Velvets. That sorta gets lost in Lou Reeds persona. I really enjoyed the video.
one of the coolest videos on youtube for sure
Thank you!
Goddam! Now that''s how you make a cover. Incredible how every "member" look so much to the real members from the VU
Great song! Great tutorial!
What a brilliant quote at the end. He was so good with prose. Thank you for this wonderful Documentary!
Awesome!
It´s just too much. Thank you.
any tabs for the lead?
Next logical stem would be to start obsessing over Les Rallizes Denudes and start showing them Fujio & Doronco licks
That sounds like a serious rabbit hole haha 😅
Everyone thinks Lou was the contrarian. He wasn't the only critical force in the band. I like the Reed interview by Elvis Costello when he reminisces about showing Sterling the "secret" chord in the Sweet Jane riff and Sterling is like "so what?" lmao......Micky Baker! Makes so much sense.
I absolutely agree! And yes I love that Sterling quote too 🤣
I was thrown when I read he didn't like to play bass because he had such a great feel and he really had the beat down and could throw in those sweet walks. His guitar playing has always struck me as very influenced by 50's R&B (I can hear licks from the New Orleans stuff, James Brown etc.)....and sliding around the double stops ala Steve Cropper. If I made a list of top ten underrated guitarists in rock n roll sterling would be in the top 5. Man I love your work on this stuff!
Sterling also loved Steve Cropper! And thanks man...hope you enjoy the three-part documentary film! I just saw that you've already seen part one. You're in for a rollercoaster ride with parts two and three!
You make this look easy. I don't believe that it is at all. Kudos. I like to think that Sterling would approve of those breaks/fills. You get it, thanks.
Thanks so much for your comment - you're quite right, there is a great deal of work that goes into these videos. I had a lot of fun making them though, and am really pleased with the results...but most of all, that people like yourself appreciate them, so thanks again for your support! If you're a fan of Sterling Morrison, might I also suggest my three-part documentary about him, which I'm sure you will enjoy: th-cam.com/play/PLXFuVjTBILlgbL7vPV_j8aZiZ2njZTpoY.html
Danke Dir LOU für dein Vermächtniss. ❤
Dano Silvertone?
Yes; I understand they were made by Danelectro and sold exclusively by Sears under the Silvertone brand name. Sterling also used a Danelectro DC model guitar in the early days of TVU.
Thank you
Nice video, thanks for making and sharing 👍
Thank you so much for this great excellent documentary about Sterling and VU who is my favorite band ever
i love my 1966 continental
@@richardc9325 Just seen your videos - nice job! Keep at it man, and get yourself in a band if you aren't already 🎹
@@CAMFORRESTERThanks, Im currently in a band but I use the new Korg Vox continental its very good playing live you should review it
@@richardc9325 Your cover of 'Light My Fire' was awesome! What type of music does your band play? I haven't played the new Continental, but I imagine it's very similar to the Nord Electro? Are you into The Velvet Underground? I did a cover of 'Sister Ray' with my Continental which you might like - John Cale's organ solo in the middle is like Manzarek, but on amphetamines! 🤣 th-cam.com/video/-L78zhtG1ow/w-d-xo.htmlsi=sEouBFT0L30wxslD 😉
@@CAMFORRESTERYeah our band is heavily influenced by the doors, we are in Los Angeles and grew up with it being passed down to us. The new continental is very lightweight and easy to setup i recommend you play one if you can access it, i'll definitely check out your other videos
very interesting
Truly impressive. In every aspect. The Cale organ sonics are especially fascinating in your ability to replicate. Once they moved past the Vox sponsorship (and John's exit too, of course) they were a different band. Still great certainly, but I would say that here they reached what was peak Velvets.
Cam - thank you again - for producing an important historic - living - documentary on Sterling's role in VU - a fitting tribute - many many thanks - I'm so glad you've kept this project going - & I may have found my AD412 ;-) the search for which brought me to discover your important recording of this history and bringing it back to life again ...
Thanks so much, Tim! Nice to hear from you again...glad to hear you've found an AD412. I think I mentioned to you previously that the only place I could find one was in Bulgaria...well, last month I bought it, and had it shipped over! So now I have two awesome looking Vox stacks for the VU tribute band project - which is progressing well indeed, you'll be glad to hear - but a couple of weeks ago, the left channel on one of the AD120VTH heads stopped working - the one I've had over four years! I've had it apart and am trying to fix it, but I've replaced several components and still, no dice. I've considered trying to build my own custom AC100/2's from scratch if I can't fix it, only I can't seem to find any clear information on the RMS power rating when paired with a 4/16ohm cab like the AD412 (I think the original AC100 cabs were 8ohm - the amps had 8/16 outputs, but I think with the latter the output is halved unless I'm mistaken)...otherwise I might opt for another (more reliable!) solid-state option, such as the Marshall Lead Mosfet 3210 (which is 100W at 4ohm - perfect for the AD412). I'd be interested to hear your thoughts! Here's the forum thread with repair progress: music-electronics-forum.com/forum/amplification/guitar-amps/maintenance-troubleshooting-repair/1006999-vox-ad120vth-amplifier-head-issue-left-channel-silent-dead-no-sound
Increidble work Cam, i just discovered you channel and am in awe! Even more amazong is your link to the Upbeat performance pf the song, i cant believe its been online for 10 years and I had no idea, its my VU holy grail. Thank you for your dedication to faitfully interpreting these great recordings
Thanks for your comment - I'm glad you've found me and am enjoying the content! Have you seen my three-part documentary on Sterling Morrison? th-cam.com/play/PLXFuVjTBILlgbL7vPV_j8aZiZ2njZTpoY.html
Just finished watching part two. Such a brilliant set of videos. Hopefully I’ll make the time to watch Part 3 soon. Beautifully put together and it’s shocking that more people haven’t seen this work. Makes me realise why that little bit more why I loved the crazy world of VU as a teenager. What a band. Nice work Cam.

Sterling's arpeggios and Lou's country-ish double stops and assorted licks sound great here! Well done!
You probably won't see nor answer this question, but I'll mention it anyway. I wondered what you thought about the bass drum being tuned to a C#? I've always thought this was an intentional decision on the part of the VU for the recording of Venus in Furs. I mean, after all, what are the odds of it being that without some judicious re-tensioning.
The drum is actually tuned to sing D#/Eb (pay particular attention in the chorus - it's perfectly in tune with the bass note of the first chord), but it has overtones that make it sound like it sings a C# at times (possibly related to an interval relationship between the batter/resonant heads if both sides aren't tuned the same, or just the acoustics of the shell itself, and type of drum head used). I just checked with headphones, and it is tuned the same way in the earlier take (although the entire recording is a semitone lower - in the key of C - so the drum is tuned to D), so you are right in that it's not a coincidence (probably a judgement on Cale's part). I deliberately tuned my bass drum to sing D# in my cover version, but it has a strong overtone of B (which results in an Augmented 5th interval) which means that either my tuning/interval method was not quite the same, or my shell and/or choice of drum heads do not interact the same way as Moe's did...interesting! 😉
@@CAMFORRESTER Thanks for the reply - much appreciated. I agree it's probably the hand of Cale ; - ). I love your last point about drum dimensions as well. On the rare occasion that I've messed around with "tuning" a drum to a definite, explicit pitch, I did find that they're far more willing to accept some "notes" more than another. Not surprising, but definitely something to bear in mind early on in proceedings - cos it could end up being easier to change the key of the song rather than to force a drum to resonate at a more or less specific frequency!
@@Unfunny_Username_389 Yes indeed, I've encountered the same thing myself a number of times while tuning the various drum kits I've had over the years!
Great - thanks. That C# m7 b9 has always left me feeling slightly shop-soiled.
@@Unfunny_Username_389 I believe certain kinds of shops still play the song frequently...
i like the drums louder, but this is a bit too loud, drums up front with rest of the band and vocals in the background

I don’t think I have ever heard a more beautiful song ❤
Great video, thank you! I have a Continental II purchased well-used from Frank Hessy of Liverpool in the mid 60's. It has plastic keys and the rear X braces which you say was on the Italian model. However the plate affixed says "Manufactured by Jennings Musical Industries, Dartford, Kent". Model is "TC/2M" and serial number is "0505". Over the years I have changed many transistors and capacitors to keep it going! Still in love with the sound!
Glad you enjoyed this - thanks for your comment! And I do recall reading that a lot of the Italian organs were incorrectly given serial plates that suggest they were built in England. I think the reason was something like using up old stock of plates before creating new ones, but I'm not certain!

27 years of playing guitar at least "full-time" if not quite "professionally", first song I ever managed to figure out by myself and then first performance -- "what goes on" at my high school's little music club rock show at age 15 -- yet to this day I still cannot get "Some Kinda Love" correct for some reason. It just never sounds right to me, no matter what I do. I feel like you may be my last hope here... I'd love your take on it. (I've given up completely on the "story of my life" solo)
@@rjsaidTry this video: th-cam.com/video/rNG5TCFgLAQ/w-d-xo.htmlsi=POpDMR-4LfX50l0R 😉
You nailed it. Well, half of it, maybe -- what exactly is going on with Lou's guitar in the other channel (in the non-closet stereo mix) that makes it so I just absolutely cannot replicate the sound that results from the interplay of both of them, no matter how or who I attempt it with?? And I have attempted more failed covers of that song than I'd like to admit. I think it's the fact that I don't generally play guitars built for that kinda tune down/play high stuff, so I never get the sound perfect. Don't ask me why I would want it to be so exact, either... no other song have I ever been so tone-OCD about.... It's just because of how long this has been a thing. (I'd have bought a big hollowbody and strung it up with 14s in an attempt to replicate that groove/sound/tone and finally put this chapter to bed, if the Jonestown hadn't gone and made that combination uncool again for at least the rest of my lifetime.)
I'd feel the need to tell you I was just joking around with the "uncool hollowbody" thing, but you know as well as I the difference between a country gentleman and an astoundingly overpriced vox super lynx.
@@rjsaidIt's interesting that you ask, as I've never intentionally focused on Lou's guitar in that track too much before. Upon listening, it sounds like he's in standard EADGBE tuning (unlike Sterling, who is in DGCFAD), and his chord voicings are very much like Sterling's in Heroin, but rhythmically strummed. If you check out my demonstration video again, for Some Kind Of Love, Lou starts with the second chord voicing Sterling plays during Heroin (G - as shown in the demonstration), then moves back down to the previous one (D), and then alternates between that and the second voicing again, but in this case moved up to the 10th fret (creating a higher voicing of D). I hope that makes sense?! And no worries, yes the Gretsch and Vox are very different axes indeed!
Heyyy, where is your cover of I Heard Her Call My Name???
It's having some edits done, it will be back soon!
Excellent cover. So good.
