Caridina dennerli in Lake Matano 2022-2024
Did you know that the beautiful and popular shrimp Caridina dennerli is facing extinction?
This tiny red crustacean is only known from a single Sulawesi lake Matano. Along with the spread of invasive fish, shrimp numbers are rapidly declining. Despite an intensive search in 2017 and 2018, not a single specimen was found! The IUCN Red List category for this species has been changed accordingly to "Critically Endangered (Possibly Extinct in the Wild)"...
But wait! In 2019, researchers with the help of local shrimp hunters found these iconic shrimps hiding under a thick layer of rocks in two places in Matano. Shrimps are not found on the places where they used to be, they stay deep under the rocks (at least 30 cm) hiding from the invasive predators. They are not safe there. The bottom is covered with a thick layer of mud and algae, which is not a normal condition, and the oxygen under the rocks can be easily depleted.
Can we find them on the next try?

This video documents our findings in Lake Matano in 2022, 2023 and 2024.
We thank EUAC, AKWB and Megazoo & Friends for the direct financial support of our trips to Lake Matano in 2023 and 2024 and our conservation work there. They have not paid for production of this video.

Caridina longidigita in Lake Poso
มุมมอง 5288 หลายเดือนก่อน
Lake Poso is one of the ancient lakes of Sulawesi, an Indonesian island. It is home to several dozen endemic species of fish and invertebrates, including 9 species of shrimps that do not occur anywhere else in the world. Caridina longidigita is one of them. Its scientific name means "long-fingered" and it's no accident - watch how it grabs food with lightning speed with its fingers! This specie...
Underwater drone in Sulawesi Lakes
มุมมอง 7599 หลายเดือนก่อน
With the support of the European Union of Aquarium Curators (EUAC), we are planning a very special adventure this year! Using an underwater drone to explore Sulawesi lakes. What is happening in Sulawesi lakes may become one of the saddest conservation stories of our era - dozens of endemic species are driven to the brink of extinction, mostly unnoticed and unaided. This is a race against time. ...
Saving Sulawesi shrimps WITH YOU
มุมมอง 8359 หลายเดือนก่อน
Sulawesi shrimps are very popular with aquarists. But few people know that these shrimps are endangered and are dramatically decreasing in their natural habitat. The main threat is the flowerhorn, which plunders the Sulawesi lakes. What happens in Lake Matano and how are Sulawesi Keepers trying to prevent it? How can YOU get involved? Visit our website for more information in English, German, C...
Greetings from Kazakhstan! It is very sad to hear that such beautiful endemics are in danger of disappearing due to human exposure and I hope that by joint efforts we will be able to preserve and maintain their population. I am keeping my colony in a separate 100 L tank along with the several species of tylomelania, with the scape almost completely repeating their natural habitat. I do not keep any fish, plants or other animals with them, and doing everything to make their living conditions as comfortable as possible, despite all the difficulties that arise along the way, because aquarium hobby in our country are not developed and popular, and we have to order from abroad everything we need for successfully keeping of these shrimps. As far as I know, only two people in Kazakhstan successfully contain and breed caridina dennerli. And me, and my good friend will do our best to keep and double our shrimps population. With love and respect to our mutual hobby.
Shrimply Amazing!
Yes, it is!!!
Does it have the white socks
Does "white socks" refer to Caridina dennerli? If yes, this species is endemic to a single lake - Lake Matano. See here: th-cam.com/video/AMDYGshZ2zw/w-d-xo.html
Video's like these really help a lot to understand how these wonderfull animals live and how their environment is like. Thank you for sharing.
Thanks, Peter. We plan to publish more portraits of shrimps. But none are as breathtaking to observe as Caridina longidigita :-)
❤❤
Amazing!! ❤❤
Very good video!!! Who are those cichlids???? Thank you so much!! ❤❤
Thanks :-) It is flowerhorn aka Amphilophus cf. trimaculatus. See also other videos from our channel where we explain more about them and their impact on the fragile ecosystems of Sulawesi lakes.
@sulawesikeepers how did Flowerhorns appear on your lakes? By local breeders? I can't undertand It... I'm so Sorry about It. Can we talk? I'm very interested in Sulawesi. Thank you so much my friend.
@@xaviermarchan46 Please check the details here: sulawesikeepers.org/8-current-threats-to-malili-lakes-in-sulawesi/ and feel free to contact us using the website!
Indonesian central and local government needs to do something to prevent their extinction😢
And local people, too. Not everything needs to be done by the government - actually it's always down to the actions of individual people.
All plant there is Eriocaulon only?
Yes, in this video it's only Eriocaulon. But there are other species in other parts of Lake Towuti.
How about general hardness?
It is very tricky to work with GH values in Sulawesi lakes. It will not tell you enough about Ca:Mg. So we consider conductivity to be just as useful as the basic indicator. Of course, the detailed water analysis is way better, and we are working on it ;-)
You are doing a great job
Thank you, Matt. Our efforts stem from the enthusiasm of many aquarists around the world. I think you are one of them... one of us ;-)
@@sulawesikeepers I got some problems about breeding striata, and I had sent you email about the situation, please help me
Man there are Tylomelania snails everywhere! 😊
Yes there are :-)! And most of them still undescribed species. We published an overview of them on our blog: sulawesikeepers.org/snails-of-lake-poso/
beautiful lake!
It really is!
Oh no
Hi Matt! Yes, this is unfortunately the reality. We need to learn from the nature and improve our ability to keep these threatened species of shrimps in the long term. The wild forms, of course, the selectively bred strains of Caridina dennerli do not contribute to the conservation of the species.
so sad that the cichlids have taken over. Stupid humans releasing them! The poor shrimp have no chance
As long as the shrimps survive in the lakes, there is a chance. People managed to solve some big problems, why not this one? It is a BIG one, but well worth trying. And we need to be able to keep the shrimps and snails in the long term (!) in aquariums, this is a transition from a hobby to an important conservation work. Luckily, many aquarists understand this and are already involved.
This is such important work - please keep working hard and keeping us updated
Thank you. We will do our best!
Sir, are there any beginner alternatives to Sulawesi freshwater shrimps? I want something with unique vibrant colors and unique behaviors and non-Neocaridina with vibrant colors? I'm always reading your article about how difficult the Sulawesi shrimps are, and I felt insulted as a beginner. I wish that alternative existed.
Every experienced breeder started as a beginner, and there is no cheat - just start with the easier species, you will enjoy the hobby and grow your own experience. Why don't you consider Neocaridina as an easy alternative? There are many Neocaridina with nice colors. Or Caridina logemanni and similar, these are already somehow challenging if you want to breed them, but definitely very nice shrimps. Just start easy now and you will be experienced in no time.
Thanks for sharing this video. Love this channel!
Thank you very much!
in the 16 minutes, what kind of cichlids?
Same like at 5:27 and later. Flowerhorn / louhan, "Cichlasoma" sp. It is an artificial hybrid of Amphilophus trimaculatum and other species from Central America.
Great! I am keeping sulawesi shrimps now. Does the rocks there supply required minerals for shrimps?
Shrimps obtain minerals from food and water. If you are asking whether the necessary minerals are released from the stones into the water, it is not that simple. Not many substances are soluble at such a high pH. In short: it is not enough just to put the right stones in the aquarium...
Awesome creatures. We have to do our best to help them survive.
More and more aquarists are starting this hobby in China, but still a lot work to do.
Thanks for your comment. Yes, there is a lot of work to do. Starting a hobby is just one step - we need to see how many enthousiasts will still keep a healthy insurance population of these endangered species after one, two, five... ten years. This is a long-term commitment, and not an easy one. But hobbyists are very important with their passion and expertise. Especially if we cooperate, we can learn from each other and we back each other up.
@@sulawesikeepers Thank you for providing this information. Yes, there is still a lot to do. I'm not sure, but can the artificially breeded Sulawesi shrimp be put back into their native lakes in the wild in the future? I know that some large animals can do it this way.
@@TRSuperman This would also be possible in the case of shrimps. But before they can come back, two conditions must be met: 1) the lakes must be free of threats, and 2) we must maintain the shrimp species (snails, crabs, fish...) for all those years needed to "clean" the lakes. Conservation breeding also includes maintaining the species in conditions as close to the natural habitat as possible, and trying to minimize the loss of genetic diversity. Which itself is a complex topic...
Cool footage!
Thank you. It shows mostly unknown parts of the lakes. We will also bring classical "nice" shots 🙂
Is there any big fish there?
Yes, Glossogobius matanensis ( > 40 cm). Several individuals can be seen in the video. This species is endemic to Malili Lakes; Lake Poso also used to have its big goby (Mugilogobius amadi), but it is probably extinct. Then there are several exotic fish species, biggest among them are snakeheads (Channa sp.) and sailfin catfish (Pterygoplichthys sp.).
I am keeping the shrimps now!
And how is it going? Please do not keep them only now, keep them in the years to come and if you have surplus, share it with fellow aquarists. They can help you in return anytime later when you are not so lucky... and we all together are holding an insurance population for the species. Thank you!
@@sulawesikeepers Yes, the population of the shrimps in my tank become more and more, especially white stock. I sent you email a few days ago, some videoes.
@@shrimpkeepermatt1989 Well done!
The person who did this should be jailed!
That's difficult, Willy. Many people living on the shore of the lake know nothing about what lives there. This is a problem everywhere in the world - people don't value the local fauna and they don't even think that releasing an exotic animal can have serious consequences. They just don't know. Education is an extremely important job because it's one thing to get those cichlids out of the lake, but how do you make sure they aren't released again the next day? That's why we try to inform as much as possible - about what is happening in the lakes, but also about the wonderful diversity that would be a real shame to lose.
