This Episode (2024.01), after over a year since our last Episode of our Family’s Beek Story in our Home Apiary in Hertfordshire, United Kingdom, we provide an overview of what happened in 2023 - with unusual weather and - bees being bees - some unexpected events too!
Welcome to our Home Honey Bee Apiary / Bee Yard Channel. This is our First video of our Fourth Season (2024), which we hope will be interesting and invite you to journey with us by Subscribing to this, our Beekeeping Story as our family share our experiences - good and not-so-good.
We plan to upload new videos over the season - some updates, some experiments and some just because we believe many of you may wish to watch on a regular basis, as we share with you our experience and on occasion reviews of our Beekeeping and related experiences, as well as our Family Home Apiary/Bee Yard, here in beautiful Hertfordshire, United Kingdom.
Our beekeeping is based on using Long Hives - possibly a ‘surprise’ later in the Season - rather than the more common box hives stacked one on top of another.
Just our choice and the bees are in our Home Apiary/Bee Yard, so will never be a large concern. We also aim to harvest Pure Natural ‘Raw’ Flow Honey, Pressed and Bees Wax Comb Honey.
We plan to explore new and emerging - theories, tools, equipment, frames and even the ‘hives’ themselves, which may provide a spark of interest to those that watch.
Ethos
Our ethos is to use sustainable approaches where practical, that includes sustainable hives made from UK wood, supporting UK producers from beginning to end.
REMEMBER, IT IS ALL ABOUT THE BEES ! ! !

    Hi there. your presentation is good. In order not to be misunderstood, I am not in favor of the Chinese thread or the Australian flow frames because there is BPA in both. You try to criticize Chinese flow frames and advertise Australian ones. I personally bought Chinese flow frames and they confirmed that they were BPA FREE, but when I investigated they lied. I sent them back and they gave me back the full amount of my money. Then I bought the original Australian ones and check the colorless plastic on the flow frames has the number 7, which is the worst number for plastics that come into contact with food because the number seven contains BPA. I contacted the company in Australia and they refunded my full amount. Don't make the excuse that that sign is for recycling. In each number from 1 to 7 there is a triangle for recycling where plastic under number 7 is not mixed with plastic from other numbers because number 7 contains BPA. I can't display pictures and videos in the comments for you to see. But the person presenting can record it and show it. The number seven is written below the registered patent numbers.

    My biggest concern about the Chinese version is that the Chinese are known for hiding toxic waste in their products and would not want anything China Made in my Hive. The flow have does have a flaw as you can not really see if the frames are fully ready for exaction as you really don't have a full view if fully capped cells or not. Nevertheless the Australia made is a better product because of the restriction the Country has on product manufacturing. The China made products are not as restricted of product manufacturing and just like the dog treats they exported and killing many dogs I would not put any Chinese made product in my body

      They sell these as food grade plastics in all store fronts in the USA. In order to do so the plastic must meet FDA and USDA standards. When they Chinese auto flow first came out they were indeed cheap plastics that leeched into the honey. However because of it the sales declined and in order to compete with the real Flow frames the manufacturers of Auto Flow from China chose to start to produce plastics that meet the minimum FDA and USDA standards. Still original Flow frames are likely better in quality, but there is no need to worry about the toxicity of the Chinese copies. The entire stock would be pulled from the US market if even one frame were to be discovered to not be actual food grade when they are sold as such. I’m sure original Flow already would have taken the steps to have it removed from market if the plastics were not of food grade material. Flow would probably love to have their only competitor removed from the largest beekeeping supply market in the world. Hope this helps.

    I am a fifth year bee keeper in Canada and I have a question. After you have extracted the honey from the Flow Hive, is there something you do or not do with the wax capping on the outside of the frames?

    • @NaturalRawHoneyBees
      @NaturalRawHoneyBees ปีที่แล้ว

      With flow frames, you leave them in the hive once you have extracted the honey - having made sure you turned the key the close the cells in the frames. Within a few minutes, the bees will start removing all the capping as they realise the cells are not full. They cleverly clean and seal the cells again before refilling with nectar and their process of making honey resumes again, and once sealed, you can harvest your next batch. I like keeping the honey from each frame in separate jars, as you can taste the differences from frame to frame - based on the flowers they visit when filling each frame in turn. Honey Roulette - every spin is a nice sweat win!

  • @XxBloggs
    @XxBloggs ปีที่แล้ว

    Let’s be completely clear about these. The Chinese are stealing the IP of the Flow Hive people. If you’re ok buying stolen goods you can buy them I guess. The Chinese ones are not the same as the flow ones and are not made of food grade plastic.

    i can see that you are trying hard to promote the Australian frames, but Chinese frames look as good as thank you for the video

    • @NaturalRawHoneyBees
      @NaturalRawHoneyBees ปีที่แล้ว

      Thank you for your comments. The two key differences is that the Chinese Autoframe manufacture does not confirm the plastic food safety to the same levels as the Australian Flow Frames, and key point is that the Chinese AutoFrames are slightly bigger than a standard Langstroth and you do need to remove a single blade and rewire for them to fit a Langstroth box. The Australian FlowFrames fit first time, though do cost significantly more. If you do not mind the additional effort and not concerned about potential plastic leaching that the Australian FlowFrames claim will not happen with their frames, then the Chinese AutoFrames are a worthy consideration. For clarity I paid full price for both sets of frames and have no incentives from either supplier thus the video reflects my personal views. Enjoy watching.

    Before anybody purchase a flow hive they should be aware of the plastic comb in a flow hive . The honey is stored by the bees in the plastic comb. Plastic whatever grade is made from nasty chemicals and will be leaching and break down over time and will be contaminating your honey with micro plastic. Not to forget how the leaching chemicals will harm the bees.Some beekeepers are now using plastic foundations rather than natural wax foundations as well as plastic boxes rather than wood. Beekeeping has existed for centuries without plastic. Make sure you purchase your honey from a beekeeper who doesn’t use any plastic. War on Plastic

    • @NaturalRawHoneyBees
      @NaturalRawHoneyBees ปีที่แล้ว

      I can agree with your sentiment about plastic, however I believe as with many things in life there is a judgement as to different factors. My ethos is using ‘plastic’ that would be used for more than just a decade, as well as to limit disturbance of the colony when harvesting, which would be significant greater when removing frames to extract as what is now ‘the normal method’. Flow hives do not need storage containers (usually plastic), sieves (regularly plastic or metal) or fine mesh filters/strainers (usually plastic, linen or cotton). Further I refer to my concerns about leaching of plastic ‘chemicals, in my videos (2022.08 & 2022.09) about different ‘flow’ type frames and am clear they are made from plastics. I am however comfortable that the original Australian ‘Flow Frames’ do not do ‘leach’ based on research I have seen about the ‘food grade’ plastic they use, even after a number of years of use. I do clearly question this fact about other ‘flow-type’ brands as they make no such claims. Not all plastic is the same, and avoiding where appropriate must be encouraged. Plastic should I agree be used after consideration and balancing the pros and cons for your apiary, the bees, consumers of the honey and the wider environment. I avoid plastic jars/squeazy bears and plastic in labels for this reason, however I have not found a plastic free way of storing and selling comb…. If anyone does, please let me know.

      In the Long Hive I have, we have a specific are towards the middle of the double hive, where each hive comes together, which has been purposely designed by Hyde Hives to hold Flow Frames. The frames are lowered into the hive just like the other ‘traditional’ frames. Do watch our Episodes 2022.08 and 2022.09 to learn more. Enjoy watching - it is all about the bees!

    A good modification. Waiting to see how well it will work. The honey produce by flow hive is cleaner n not messy like the conventional method.....

    • @NaturalRawHoneyBees
      @NaturalRawHoneyBees ปีที่แล้ว

      Peter, I agree there are many potential advantages of the flow hive system. Disadvantages include that they are of course made with plastic, should be avoided to collect honey from rapid crystallising honey - thus I avoid for Rape/Canola and Ivy here in UK. I thus leave tte spring honey for the bees and use the flow frames for the Summer harvest - knowing they now have plenty of stores.

    Just talked with. Hyde hives about what you have in this film . Yet hydehives say that they are not building longhives with flow frames any more. Therefore your build is important how flow frames function in long hives.

      That is a shame as they are well made - though did cost quite a bit more, though well worth it! I know they have so many orders of their hives, I don’t think they have time to also make these. Dean said it takes a lot linger to make them than a standard frame long hive. Thanks for subscribing… more to follow

    Get yourself a Silicon Pastry Brush... Wax won't clog or Kill your Paint Brush Bristles ! And, as Silicon can take high Heat, any blobs of Wax can be removed by just putting the Silicon Brush back into that melted Wax. Once finished, it hardens, and you can peel it off each Silicon bristle. Easy ! 👍 ... But don't take the Kitchen one, if your wanting to Egg wash say Scones ! 😉 🐝🐝🐝🐝🐝🐝🐝🐝🐝 Happy Beekeeping 2022 🐝🐝🐝🐝🐝🐝🐝🐝🐝 If you don't have Wax to hand, in prepping any Bee Frame Comb for Bees use, a Sugar/Water Syrup Painted onto it, will attract the Bees to start Comb storing that Honey. Ideally do a 2:1 Syrup (thicker x2 parts Sugar dissolved in x1 part Water.) 😎

Tip : You don't need to see the sides on both types, if the channels continue to drip Honey thru the tubing... then its still 'open', if not, its closed ! Key use for both, some say the Key Flexes to much, trick is, use x2 Keys* together (parallel) gives more strength to turn, without thin metal twist (on using x1 !) * Buy two Boxes of Frames, to get x2 Keys. Finally : Flow suggest and recommend, going into the Key channel, only about 4" (inches) do a turn open, then 8", do another turn, keep doing so, until whole length (up to back) is turned and 'opened'. That way, Honey starts to flow in the first front 20%, 40%, 60%... 100%... all turned, all Honey is taken ! And, say you see different Colours of Honey in each Frame. Some might be early Nectars (Fruit Blossom) others like : Hedgerow species, to late season like Willow Herb.... Only (open) eat a Frame at a time. 👍 All this applies to Autoframe too. Final point. You can just add a Flow/Auto Frame into a Standard Brood Box (as a Super) MUST be equipment based on "Langstroth" only ! (Frames don't fit.... National Brood Boxes, as National Frame are shorter in length !!! ) 🥺 And no need for cut out rear panel etc (for Key access)... just lift the whole "Frame Out", maybe balance on a Table, and Key it open with a Jar just below it. Empty it, close channels with Key. And put it back into the Brood Box, to do the next one. Simples. 😎 🐝🐝🐝🐝🐝🐝🐝🐝🐝 Happy Beekeeping 2022. 🐝🐝🐝🐝🐝🐝🐝🐝🐝

    Me. I would only put 3 frames in each, as how they going to store winter stores?

    • @NaturalRawHoneyBees
      @NaturalRawHoneyBees 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      I will still have them going in to Winter with 11 Brood Frames. The UK Winters are not usually very cold and that will be all that is needed. Due to the scales on the hives, if they get through the stores over Winter, I will be able to add Fondant on top of the crown board, which they can eat. Spring 2022, the colony had lots of remaining stores after a fairly typical Winter for Hertfordshire, United Kingdom.

      I plan to dismantle them, remove a blade and then reassemble them. They ought then be a little smaller and should hopefully fit. May do another video as to how I do this - though will only use the frames next year now.

    You can adjust the length of the frames by removing the wire, then taking out one of the segments. You then put the wire back in with more twists in it. Flex the frame in a horizontal direction to get the wire off.

    • @NaturalRawHoneyBees
      @NaturalRawHoneyBees 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Thanks RBR Greenie. In was going to look into this over the Winter, so good to know it can be done! May make a video showing this, though rather annoying that they do not fit into a Langstroth Hive, as the Australian once fit so well and easilty.

      @@NaturalRawHoneyBees I have a few of the autoflow hives, if your chinese frames are the same you will probably need to put a peice of timber above the key area to stop bees from flying out when you go to harvest. Other than that I haven't had any problems with mine oner the last two years.

      So am I, however probably a sign about the different standards to detail - quite a key one! Would have been interesting to try the two frames side by side… Having measured the two frames - the Chinese versions are larger than a standard Langstroth frame / Australian Flow Frames by +-5mm!

    Raw honey is not a legal definition. Want raw? Get milk or fish!

    • @NaturalRawHoneyBees
      @NaturalRawHoneyBees ปีที่แล้ว

      Agree that in UK you cannot market ‘Raw Honey’ as not legal to do so under UK labelling regulations. Our Chanel is called ‘Natural Raw Honey Bees’, we are not referring to Raw Honey. This reflects our ethos to generally manage our hives naturally - this does not mean we will never treat , though to only do so if we believe necessary. We do not filter or heat the honey we sell. I believe that most people would (not legally speaking) accept that ‘Raw’ is unfiltered and usually unheated. In UK ‘Natural Honey’ and/or ‘Pure Honey’ can to be used on Honey Labels, not ‘Raw Honey’. Other countries I accept do allow the use of ‘Raw Honey’ on labels and for marketing purposes, and everyone should check what their labelling regulations allow/do not allow. Copy of the UK regulations can be read here: www.legislation.gov.uk/uksi/2015/1348/pdfs/uksi_20151348_en.pdf 🐝
