I just found this. How would I know if my idea has already gotten a copyright? I get it, you can't copyright the idea, just the execution. So, for both of the movies you mentioned, you couldn't 1) copy them exactly, for example, TITLE, Part 2, or 2) reference the same characters, correct? For my idea, it's possible/probably there's already been an execution of something similar to it. For that matter, it's possible that my characters are similar to characters already seen in TV or movies. Is there any research here or do they just hand out the copyright? If disputed I assume judgement would lean towards the "original" writer? THANKS

I want to learn how to use Final Draft. Do you have a video ? Why are you going back and forth ? Also, what is the screen on the left in FD ? Another thing…if you are writing dialogue how does FD automatically format that.

This is very interesting and detailed, thank you. However, I'm British, currently living in Canada. I have a what I consider to be a killer treatment, but wish to protected it before inflicting it on someone. This is not a screenplay. Does the described process therefore include treatments? To add to the complication, the treatment is based on an internationally famous fictional character. Where would be my best place to copyright something that serves me internationally, please? In this context, what, then, is the ultimate definition of intellectual property? Thank you.

If that's not the case, how do I know that someone won't just change the title and claim the rest as their work? I thought you would save the screenplay as a PDF or some other standardized format so that you could have security on the content.

I really love the Rings of Power, not having any prior knowledge of the Silmarillion but having read Lord of the Rings and the Hobbit and having also loved the films. I gather only hardcore fans are commenting on here so thought this might lighten things up a bit. It is a shame that Amazon didn’t get the rights, but I think they are doing a great job with what they have. I find the character of Galadriel not quite as I imagined and wonder if her husband, (I understand she was supposed to be married) will make an appearance in the show ever. The show is now in the 2nd season and we are awaiting the 4th episode to drop.

And yet I am plagued by another doubt that seems to have no answer, since I have probably not seen the right screenplays to solve my problem; therefore I ask you if you can answer me: When a character thinks, is it right to write it with (V.O.) after the name. So far clear, but if a character first thinks and then speaks, are they two different dialogues or should I put the parentheses (speaks) under the thought and then continue with the spoken dialogue?

Isn't it just as well, in a spec script, to simply state in the Action that the Character is texting, place in quotes the actual words and leave it to the Director to decide how to put it up on screen?

It's too wishy washy for new, casual viewers, too spoonfed, boring and lame for Lord of the Rings movie fans ... and way too "blasphemous" for hard-core Tolkien fans. Why did they bother? The nerd that still lives inside Bezos wanted it. Having ANY rights to Tolkien's work was his Precious .... and look at the evil that's been done as a result........gollum.....eck
