Singing Streets visits Headley Grange, where Led Zeppelin recorded several classic albums
Singing Streets visits Headley Grange, the iconic Led Zeppelin recording site.
Headley Grange was the venue for some of Led Zeppelin's most iconic recordings.
Built in 1795, and originally used as a workhouse, the band came here in the winter of 1970 to work on what would become 'Led Zeppelin IV'.
Robert Plant wrote most of the lyrics to 'Stairway to Heaven' here in a single day. John Bonham's drumming for 'When the Levee Breaks' was recorded in the hallway, while 'Black Dog' was supposedly named after a black Labrador Retriever who was hanging around during recording.
The band also either composed or recorded parts of 'Led Zeppelin III', 'Houses of the Holy' and 'Physical Graffiti' here.
Jimmy Page revisits Headley Grange in the 2009 documentary 'It Might Get Loud', in which he describes how the drums for 'When the Levee Breaks' were recorded in the cavernous hallway, with its echoing acoustics, and how they ran cables to a recording truck outside..
Bad Company recorded their self-titled debut album here in November 1973. Peter Grant managed both bands at the time and the album was the first release on Zeppelin's Swan Song label.
Genesis spent three months here in 1974, writing and rehearsing 'The Lamb Lies Down on Broadway', which would prove to be their last record with Peter Gabriel.
Pre-fame Huey Lewis and his band Clover lived here in 1976. Elvis Costello came here to rehearse the songs for his first album for which Clover were the backing band, though Huey wasn't on the recording.
Other bands to have recorded at Headley Grange include Fleetwood Mac, Peter Frampton, the Pretty Things, and Ian Dury.
In 1982, Yazoo recorded the video for their single 'Don't Go' here, Headley Grange serving as the venue for their recreation of Frankenstein's monster.
The house, which has since been granted Grade II listed status, is now a private residence.
Queen's Roger Taylor did however get to visit in the summer of 2014 with Red Hot Chili Peppers' drummer Chad Smith, where they made a recording of sampled beats, breaks and loops."

Singing Streets visits Julian Cope's house where Courtney Love stayed

This location was at the epicentre of Liverpool's music scene of the early '80s. Julian Cope, Pete De Freitas (Echo and the Bunnymen), Peter Burns (Dead or Alive) and Paul Simpson (The Wild Swans) all lived on a first floor flat here. Singing Streets visits The Casbah Club in Liverpool, where The Beatles got started

The Quarrymen played at the launch of The Casbah here on 29 August 1959. Mona Best opened the club, which operated from 1959 to 1962, at the home that she bought for her and her family with money she had won on a horse race. Mona, an interesting character to put it mildly, came up with the idea of opening a club in the basement after watching a TV report about The 2i's Coffee Bar in Soho where ...

Singing Streets visits Jimmy Page's House
Visited there on my London visit many years ago - had delusions of Jimmy jumping out of a car and inviting me inside for a tour of his guitars - but that part didn't happen 😞
Wow she’s very pretty. I always thought that was Ozzy on the album cover 😅
very interesting.
This is a really good premise for an app. I hope it continues to grow. Manchester has a very rich history of music. I mean for a city to produce Oasis, Joy Division and The Smiths is pretty spectacular! Equally, I think my hometown of Birmingham would offer some cool locations for the app (Black Sabbath, Duran Duran, Ocean Colour Scene, UB40, Jeff Lyne of ELO to name a few). I'd download it but it's not on google play store :(
Thank you! Birmingham is definitely on the list of future Cities. We will definitely have the app available for Android as soon as we're able.
Amazing. I'll try to visit all those places on my next trip to Manchester. What a beautiful city. Do you know if one can enter the DM house? Greets from Chile :D
The Definitely Maybe house is a private residence, so it's unfortunately not open to the public. There's lots to see around there, though! Download Singing Streets from the App Store to see it all! Cheers.
I bet it's haunted 😅
I am not sure it is Holland Park. How far from tube station Holland Park? Funny they have these blocks of flats on the other side of the street.
Thanks for not mentioning Barclay James Harvest, who probably recorded more music there than any other act, other than 10cc.
Worked next door at Michael Winners house Years ago. He was NOTHING like most people would imagine. A really funny guy
I used to hang out there when richard had it , i was a friend of damian harris
Jimmy Page aint got time for that. He will cut you....find out.
Is this a high end area of the city?
Imagine these kunts hanging around outside your home
That patch of grass just across the road, stood a famous music venue called tabernacle, almost every famous artist in the 1960s played in there including the great Jimi Hendrix
Robbie Williams” bought his house from Micheal winner” who directed the death wish films,
He lives in Alistair Crowley's old Castle.
All these studio are gone now. It’s sad but it is the way of the modern world.
how about visiting freddie mercury's house logan mews kensington w8
Hey Colin - we don't have a video from there but we did visit it and it's in our iPhone App (along with four other places Freddie lived around London).
"All the rebellious rockers live in Holland Park don't you know where Lord Snooty and Sir Richard Pumpaloaf reside."
With a lot of all this sort of thing, we actually can't tell exactly what this is about. Many of that type have their day and like a doggie, they go like oh gosh that's all there is - 15 minutes whizz by so fast, how can that all happen? where, if any at all or not, are those bitter regrets? maybe none at all... who know 😮
Brian May also had problems with neighbours digging mega-basements under their houses. Williams didn't help the situation with Page by blasting out music and parading around his garden wearing a wig and stuffing a pillow under his shirt in an apparent parody of Robert Plant.
i regularly drive up to london construction sites in london i was driving down Kensington high street trying to avoid the traffic on cromwell rd heading out of town and who crossed the street in front of me jimmy never forget that he was just bimbling along trademark smile on his face i didn't say anything or try to attract his attention as you might think you would . Yes i am a led zep fan
Amazing!
www.bbc.co.uk/programmes/b06r14pr
Pretty cool. Thanks :)
It was actually Robbie Williams was having an indoor swimming pool built under his house. The basement in the house was not big enough so Robbie was having the ground excavated under the house causing him to have new foundations and under pinning. The ground is very soft there with a high water table. The vibration and ground movement was a concern as these properties have unknown foundations So Jimmy was worried about the foundations to his own property being so close. Robbie stubborn as ever doesn’t care about historical properties so an argument ensued
Just shows what a dipstick Williams is.
Thanks
I wonder what happened to all of the lyric cards? Were they just binned? Worth a small fortune now
@@justinmaguire8971 we can report they weren’t still on the ground 😳
Saw a comment on the SHB video that said his dad was watching the video while it was being made, and picked up one of the cards after the shoot. His dad kept it, and the son now has it framed. He said his dad recalled his friend picking up a stack of the cards….
Yes, but where did Weird Al shoot the 'Bob' video?
Apparently in an alleyway in Los Angeles. I couldn't find the exact location.
Of all the places Jimmy could reside, why there next to a busy street?
Probably much less busy in 1974.
They could of got at least the same 'Replica' Phone Box, with more Square 'Glass' than the one shown , Poor effort, whoever arranged this .. why are people getting excited about trying to enter the 'Phone Box' ?? It's just a ( Wrong ) Replica anyway ??? ..They might as well stand in ANY phone Box in London and pretend its the Original One !
Never knew this!
The Beatles' first place in Liverpool, where they played more than 200 times , is simply amazing, thank you for sharing it.
The side entrance through the gate is the way to where Courtney and her friend lived
Fantastico posto ❤
Nope. Jimmy wasn't recording in the basement. Jimmy was worried Robbie's basement construction would detrimentally affect the structure of Tower House, particularly the wall paintings. Jimmy doesn't even play amplified instruments in Tower House in case the vibrations do damage.
Jimmy is a fan of architecture. I'm an architect so I have an in if I ever meet my favorite musician!
Did you find any needles outside his house? 😆
Hey you guys who think it’s interesting and cool to stalk people (yep that’s what you’re doing) , be assured it’s NOT. Doesn’t matter if it’s a famous person. How would you feel if this was happening to you?
Led Zeppelin ❤
Wow, thanks guys! Really well done video.
Thanks Worth - I've been to Liverpool twice but have not et made it to the CASBAH. Definitely now on the list for the next visit - maybe even book a room there!!!
So cool! Can't wait to check it out.

Bought the house from Michael Caine? Right?
Hey Allan, Richard Harris according to this article: "Page bought the house from the actor Richard Harris (John Betjeman had it before him) and when first viewing it, Harris’s Camelot throne was still in the library." www.theguardian.com/lifeandstyle/2018/jul/08/stairway-to-heaven-jimmy-page-castle-is-his-home-led-zeppelin
No that was his house in Windsor which he has now sold.
It was previously owned by Michael Winner.
@proudman6598 Robbie Williams House Michael Winner - Jimmy Page Richard Harris. Bowie wanted it but Page got it. I was privileged to see inside most of the house in 1996.
is this in a gated area or can you just drive down the street and see it? can you see Jimmy at the local starbucks? I am pro-vajazzle as many people know. from the vid it might get loud it looks like he has a great record collection in his music room.
Hi Mike... it's surprisingly accessible to the great unwashed. The video was shot on a regular road (hence all the background noise :| )
he goes to record fairs and buys zep bootlegs lps
Not recording. The house is fragile and vibrations for machines to dig and maybe blast can cause great damage. This is a Level 1 house of historical architectural significance.
The one true House of God! (yeah, in know who used to own it, but now it is Holy!)
That was a pretty snarky video. I’m glad it was it was as short as it was uninformed.
Wow - so fascinating! Thank you Worth, lovely to have this insight.
