How Reading Saved My Life
A year ago, I was struggling with depression, suicidal thoughts, and social anxiety. I lost myself completely-until I found books again. Reading became my escape, my lifeline, and ultimately, my turning point. But I also had to learn that escaping wasn’t the same as healing.
In this video, I take you through my journey-from being signed off work and starting antidepressants to rediscovering my love for literature, struggling with isolation, and finally finding my way back to myself. This is my story of how books saved me… and how I learned to save myself.

I cried twice during this and I'm not ashamed to admit it! I felt I could relate on so many things and every time you tell me there's light at the end of the tunnel, it just gives me that little spark to keep going and recognise things will get better! Love to anyone watching who's having a tough time, we can get through it together! ❤
@@STANovels there is ALWAYS light at the end of the tunnel, please never doubt it. ❤️
I listened to the audio book to the ‘empire of the damned” , it’s great. All of the series .
Amen about Twilight. I DNFed the first one when it said that vampires couldn’t go outside because their skin shimmered and that they had to play baseball in the woods because they hit the ball so far. I mean…
Glad your channel came up on my kindle. I'm an older American guy 75 with 4 British grandparents, paternal ones from Manchester area. My paternal grandma always dunked her cookie in her tea. My grandad came to USA to run textile mill. All the books on your list except for one are found in my library system here in Gulf Coast area of Florida. I lived up in cold north till I retired. I have a small house now so I use mainly library books, ebooks if they have them. Great selection of books. I get syfy fatigue after 3-4 books and switch genres. Been over to the UK many times, mostly to Manchester and Newcastle areas. Looking forward to more videos.
@@joegilbody4878 absolutely love the story of how your grandparents moved to the states.
There is an older book series the first of which is Pawn of Prophecy by David Eddings. I read it ages ago but loved that series so much
Thank you for your honesty; who knows how many people you are helping! 8 am glad you have found a way out of the darkness. You are an inspiration!!❤
Hi Tyrone, well done for sharing. My grandfather always told me 'it takes a real man to cry and show emotions'. So thankful you survived and still here to tell your story.📖☕
@@carlstewart7094 thanks so much. Your grandad sounds like he was a great man
Certainly was mate, thanks 🙏
Hi Tyrone, I only found your channel last week but just wanted to say I’m so glad that you’re here. The things you are putting out into the world are so important. I have trauma from childhood too, and have lost too many amazing people to suicide. Please keep doing what you are doing. I love the realness of your videos, the books and the honesty, there’s not enough of it these days. Take care and thank you again the world is a better place for you being here.
I must admit when I read the synopsis for The Song of Achilles, I was disappointed when I read that it was about war from approximately half-way through. Nevertheless, I decided to go ahead with it. Being forewarned, is definitely being forearmed and although it was my least favourite aspect, I still enjoyed it. The ending killed me. "In the darkness, two shadows, reaching through the hopeless heavy dusk..."
Hey dude. Thank you so much for making this video. I was also sexually abused on numerous occasions as a child. I’ve also got other traumas on top of that. I felt like that last year and can feel my mental health declining now. After watching your video I think my first stop will be with the doctor. Wish I had some outlet like the thousands of people you have online. It’s great you’ve built this support. Any way thanks again. Can’t wait to see more content
@@CraigAkhurst-rl5zr well done for saying that out loud buddy. The first step of healing is accepting it and learning how to move forward to a better and happier life ❤️
Thank you for being honest and thank you for being…you. I have dealt with depression and anxiety since I was 16 and 30 years on I still struggle with feeling like I am not enough, much due to the relationship I had with one of my parents growing up. From a very small age I was used as a battering ram, physically, emotionally and mentally and you don’t expect that one of the people that bring you in to this world to do that. Also to how my partner is towards me and turns the screws in my head and very much makes me feel like I am not worth the air I breathe as I am always last, always forgotten, always left behind. Can I walk away though, no as being on my own is a scary place. I have my son but I don’t want him being affected by anything. I went through similar things like you did when I was 14 with a family friend and like you I just dealt with it, no charges were brought and I just got on with it. I have always been honest with my children and that if they ever need to talk to me about anything then they can and nothing will ever phase me. I’ve never found a medication that would work either and became medication intolerant. Now with reading and also writing I deal with my issues. I am writing my own mindfuck series and I put everything down, who has pissed me off and why, how I’ve dealt with it and what I did. How I feel on the day to day basis. I don’t write in it every day but Christ when I get the urge to write it is a release. The books also help so much and with certain books I will annotate the shit out of them tearing apart characters apart if necessary. I am so glad you found your breakthrough moment and I am so glad that you saw what a special person you are. Never apologise for tears as the tears show you are human and you feel and that is only a good thing. Thank you again for everything you bring to the book community whichever platform you take, you are valued as are your opinions and the world is definitely a better place with you in it
You are extremely brave, it’s not easy to be this vulnerable. You should be proud of yourself. Spoke to a lot of similar feelings I’ve had myself. You’ve just gained a new subscriber.

@@SuboJvR thanks so much. I often struggle with my self worth and it's absolutely something I am working on every single day ❤️ I truly appreciate the support x
Don’t be frustrated at not getting through without crying, I saw your tears as triumphant - it’s such a powerful moment to hear you acknowledge the world is better with you in it, because it is! All we can do is take it day by day, and it seems like your days are much brighter than they were so I am sooooo happy that you stuck around 🖤

I love Spinning Silver, super wintery vibes and 3 incredible women whose stories weave through each others, through troubles and through triumphs. Didn’t care for Uprooted. Other fav standalone are A Confusion of Princes by Garth Nix, sci-fi romp, audio is fun Patrick Ness, A Monster Calls, and also his completely different Burn Gingerbread by Robert Dinsdale (Vibes similar to A Monster Calls) If you like David Gemmel his Lord of the Silver Bow is a good Troy version. Fantasy horror fav is Weaveworld by Clive Barker Fav recently novella A Hired Blade by JC Rycroft Fav short story Galatea by Madeline Miller Kristoff’s vampire series is better on audio imo Non fantasy historical- have you read Birdsong by Sebastian Faulks ? WW1, excellent The True History of the Kelly Gang by Peter Carey For Troy war female view The Silence of the Girls by Pat Barker

I've watched your channel on TH-cam for a while. I have to comment today because this is an extraordinary statement, so honest and compelling. I am sure you have helped more people than you will ever know. Oh, and I also need to thank you for the recent M W Craven recommendation, which prompted me to read "The Puppet Show". I loved it.
@@RayBlake thanks so much buddy. Really happy you enjoyed the puppet show. I thought black summer which is book two was even better
A possibility to get you into a better place could be reading poetry. Try Robert Bly, who started the mythopoetic men's movement in America. Also, soul and natured-based poets: Mary Oliver, David Whyte, Rumi, Maria Ranier Rilke, Wendell Berry, et al. They can fill you up with beauty, authenticity, resilience, thoughtfulness, emotionality, empathy, individuation.
How do they get to sell their books at such a cheap price?
Huge respect for how open you are with your audience. Glad you're in a better place. Love the content and look forward to every new video. We've had a brief chat in the comments a few times, so thought I'd share a little bit about myself... I'm a 29 year old from Derby with a 16 month old daughter. I can't relate to the mental health struggles but I appreciate you sharing your experience. Hopefully I can join a meet up at some point in the future!

Stick with Jo Nesbo as his books get significantly better, Bat and Cockroaches are not his best works

Chuck P. -Fight Club I agree was an almost DNF for me. Most of his books are because they are graphic and super harsh and without societal edits. Without giving it away I will tell you that what you think this book is, it isn’t. So if you can stomach reading through the muck you’ll get to what to book really is, which is not white men blowing off steam. To be honest, I’d probably get more out of it if I read it a 2nd time, since I slogged my way through it the first time, but I’m unwilling to put my self through that again. So, no pressure as you said SO many good books out there to read. Love what you do. Glad to have found you here 😊
@@ShelliTruax I think one of my problems is that when it comes to deeper meanings in books, I usually miss them. I feel like id have more chance finding my Dad than the meaning behind most books 🤣
Bravo. I’m so impressed by your honesty and openness. You Rock On!!
@@MancFlowerDragon thanks so much ❤️
So, I dont normally post more than once but I agree with you about being glad that my trauma and abuse happened to me because it meant it didn't happen to anyone else. On top of that, it's given me so much that I can teach my own children if I have them, to help them know it's okay to talk about how they're feeling and recognise signs of things that aren't okay or make them uncomfortable. My partner has suffered in very much the same ways you and I have and our motto has always been: The cycle ends with us. ♥
@@StephReadsStufff the cycle absolutely does end with us ❤️
14:08, Yep, It's okay not to be okay, it's not okay to hide it, that will eat at you so much. 15:44, I'm very much the same in that regard, will try to take the positives away no matter the outcome, that's just who I am. 18:38, Dealing with it and facing it head on is the best solution no matter how hard, otherwise it'll devour you. I was writing this comment as I was watching along. To anyone going through anything just know there is help out there, there is also light at the end of the tunnel and try take it one day at a time. Also proud of you Tyrone, all the luv always 🖤

@@MMjones6459 thanks a lot 🤗
Have you ever read any of the Edward Marston detective books? I highly recommend them.
I had a bad patch in the summer of 2003 - the cause of mine was losing my mum when I was 14 (and there had been other deaths in the family of people I were close to, like my grandmother, one of my uncles (my mum's older brother), and a great aunt and uncle over a five year period from 1991, the accumulation of that, and my mum was the worst.) I was able to focus a lot of my mind on school and college work, but had to give up the college stuff for financial reasons and in that summer it all came crashing in on me. I wasn't able to read for a few weeks, mainly due to not being able to concentrate on it and not being able to sleep but some how, I was able to start reading books again and I felt like I had to, to keep the unwanted thoughts out of my head - reading the books meant that my thoughts were focused on that and not on the things that were causing my depression. Of course, my border collie helped me too because I had to be around to continue to care for him. I've had other episodes of low mood since then, and lived through bad times, but none were as bad as that summer. I find doing creative things like art and crafting help as well. Dogs, books and art...
M W Craven - all these books are absolutely fantastic. Definitely a book-to-book series that are wonderful reads. If you can - give them a go!
@@AngelaColeman-b6i I definitely plan on finishing that series this year, for sure 😊
