I initially created this TH-cam channel with the intention of uploading and sharing brief but hopefully entertaining videos of my HO Scale model train layout. Now I also share how I get down on their luck locomotives running again, excursions to out-of-town locations, and working with the DCC-EX technology to operate my DC-powered trains.
My layout started out as a modest 7'x4', and over the course of time evolved into a 14.5'x6.5'. Naturally, the layout is never completed.
I don't profess myself to be an expert model railroader. I'm just an average Joe who loves model railroading and wants to share his hobby with people who have like interests.
To all who watch and perhaps subscribe, thank you for stopping by!

Athearn Blue Box B&O ALCo PA1 Wouldn't Run When Tested
I bought this Athearn locomotive because my wife loves this particular B&O livery. I hadn't planned on making this the subject of a video; but when I placed it on the test track and it wouldn't move even a fraction of an inch, I made the decision to record its restoration to operational status.

I've bought this delightful locomotive from one of the Facebook Buy/Sell groups I belong to. While the run test showed impeccable performance, it turned out there was more to it than an Athearn with an AC4400CW shell fitted over it. ANOTHER Problematic Pacific by Mantua Winds Up on My Workbench!

If getting the Mantua B&O 4-6-2 Pacific running properly wasn't trouble enough, then this Mantua Chessie Pacific certainly was. I picked her up at the Auguat 2024 Greenberg Model Railroad Show and, like the Athearn H24-66 Trainmasters, was assured it could run. WRONG! After a much needed onceover under the boiler, I got her running again.

Did you find a fix?
Hi Brett, A fix was recommended to me by someone I'm friends with on Facebook, but he also advised me that Bachmann built this particular model very shoddy. The suggested repair is on my to-do list. Thank you for stopping by!
How do I convert a loco to DCC?
Hi, Although I wired 2 mainlines for DCC-EX, I don't run DCC trains, and I don't wire locomotives for DCC operations. What I can tell you is that TH-cam is full of videos on converting locomotives to DCC; look up The DCC Guy, Solo Contracting, and Scott Rails. Best of luck!
The motor mounts did actually come from the factory in the older pre flywheel models
I agree, but I've never seen any motor mounts colored green. Usually, they are an off-white color if in good condition and dark tan when they are goners. Thank you for your input, and Happy Holidays!
The factory used various colours of wiring to power the motor. It didn't matter which colour the wires were, the soldering orientation was based on what kind of truck the locomotive had and the position of the motor on the underframe, so only two possible combinations. This ensured that each locomotive would move in the same direction respecive to the same polarity applied. They did use single wires, which were just stripped at the place of soldering because it made it so much easier to solder a single piece of wire than to hold two separate ends and solder them together onto the same contact. So, it would require less time. Mehano motors truly were a hit or miss sometimes, but they were generally fit for their purpose and easy to maintain because of their design and easy access to commutator and brushes. If serviced regularly, they would last for decades. The Mehano models in my videos are over 30 years old and still run strong, most of them having that type of motor. Your 130 variant of motor may prove a bit too weak for powering and running that ALCO C--628 model with its massive lead weight, plus a consist. Check it regularly against overheating.
I appreciate your input. I agree with the hit-or-miss regarding the motors. So far the replacement motor appears to be working fine. Thank you again.
Athearn's - indestructable, nice loco
Athearns are the Timex watches of locomotives.
Wow....I love these old good ones from the past
Always good to see the old blue box stuff running. That loco should run forever. Thanks for sharing.
It's satisfying as well. Glad you enjoyed it.
I like the slick new intro! Impulse purchases sometimes work out nicely... these certainly did.
Thank you very much! I figured it was sooner or later that I'd develop an intro. I might pick up an additional Superliner. We'll see. 😉
Thanks I have DCC-EX and love being able to run my DCC loco via a phone. I knew that somehow it was possible to run DC with the same setup but thought it would be a pain to setup. With your video it simplified it big time and now I can run both. Thanks.
Hi Marco, I'm very glad to know the video lets you have the best of both worlds. Just to let you know, I did post a follow-up video not too long afterwards on the progress DCC-EX has made with DC operations. Look it up and let me know what you think! Thank you for stopping by! Take care.
Looks like a F45...the FP45 was longer to accommodate a steam generator
It's possible. I'll have to check with my other Athearns and correct as needed.
Lookin' good Ean 🙂
Thank you very much!
That's cool. Looks great.
Thank you very much, greatly appreciated!
@masticshortline your welcome
Very nice. Thanks for sharing.
I agree, it came out pretty good. Thank you for watching!
Unique motive power. Well done🚈🎨🖌
Thank you very much!
Good old Mantua is out of a PC🍁set, most likely. They're all tanks and will run 4ever. Life 1st,hobby after,no worries🚂🇨🇦🇺🇲
It's a President's Choice locomotive? That's interesting. Mantua made good steamers. Thanks for understanding, and for watching!
@masticshortline Ah President Choice. Was a brand of high-end grocery items for lower prices at Loblaws grocery stores in Canada. Pick out special by the President of the company. They put out like 16 or so sets sold at Xmas. On request of PC, the locomotives were built well.
I always thought President's Choice were Mehano train sets. Curious this was a Mantua and not Mehano.
Well that was a pleasant surprise. Not what you would normally expect. Thanks for sharing.
I was pleasantly surprised as well when I opened the boiler. Glad you enjoyed it!
Very nice! Always nice to find an engine you are looking for. Thanks for sharing. One small complaint. Your music is much louder than the rest of the video. Just about jumped out of my chair. LOL
Thank you very much John! I love finding wish-list locomotives, especially when they're within rea$on. I'm still working on how to create videos, so please bear with me as I get the hand of it. LoL
That is cool looking locomotive
It most certainly is!
I had the same issue with a Walthers Proto GP-7. I just remove the wire and switch it around to run this engine. Can't run it with any other loco, but it's a great running piece so I left it alone. Can something be done to make it run correctly??
One of two things could be the reason: 1. Walthers Proto poorly assembled the locomotive and Quality Control was out to lunch. 2. Walthers Proto misassembled the locomotive and QC was still out to lunch or was paid to look the other way. Did you buy the locomotive new or pre-owned? If pre-owned, then the previous owner must've done something to wind you up in your situation. Otherwise, it's QC asleep at the wheel. If you've managed to get it to run and it runs well, count it as a win. I'm not exactly sure what you mean by not being able to run with other locos. Thanks for stopping by!
You are correct about "having guardrails". I myself, when pay day comes around, always put 20 bucks aside in a private stash. That way i have a good amount ,as I limit myself to one or two shows a year total. I could go to the hobby shops nearby, that have a good "second hand selection", but I avoid that to go to shows with larger selections available in one shot, and come home happy, lol. I had to replace my doodle bugs geared axles. I couldn't find any stock ones, so i bit the bullet and bought the replacements available from Northwest Shortline. Admittedly, their replacements work great!.
Thank you for seeing it my way. If I know a show or a swap meet is coming up, I'll hold off on eBay & FB Marketplace or Buy/Sell groups until afterwards. As for the Doodlebugs, I feel your pain with NWSL; glad to know what they sell works! Thanks again for stopping by!
Could the motor itself be backwards?
The motor wasn't seated backwards because, and I blame myself for not recording it, when I flipped the motor it wasn't sitting correctly.
Maybe it had a GE D9-44CW shell on it before as an EMD SD40-2 chassis would be way to short along with the air tanks being on the right side of the fuel tank.
Hi Derek, I appreciate the input. Thank you very much. If I happen upon a Dash-9 shell, I'll give it a go.
@@masticshortline I believe some of the CP units do have the GE steerable trucks on them you can always check out photos to verify that this particular unit does or does not have the steerable truck on it if so you can keep the AC shell on and not find a D9 shell instead.

@@masticshortline And, Hello to you too, I'm saying Hi to you now, Much appreciated and thank you very much for answering my comment.
I also have Dundas Valley Hobbies, 15 minutes away, and Paris Junction hobbies, 30 minutes away. Don't mean to boast, just very happy with my choices.
I have to agree with you highly on the vast majority of this videos subjects. It's not easy to find any particular locations of shops these days. Train shows have been (in my experience) the best overall ways to get train stuff. especially when it comes to a great deal or more. I've been able to get diesels or steam engines that are maybe 125 retail between 20 and 50 bucks. Freight cars, I've been able to buy a whole flat of box and flat cars mixed for around 15 bucks (a flat consisting of maybe between 20 and 30 individual freight cars, during the last 5 minutes of a train show, lol. As to any shops... I do know of a handful I can recommend ,here in northeast Indiana if anyone passes through.
Thank you for this subject vidro 😊
Hi Ean, great video, regret you didnt ask me, living in Sudbury Ontario, my closest stores would be in Ottawa ( hobbyland - incl. Consignment ) on Montreal road, Larkspur in Merrickville ON or Toronto area, meaning minimal a 3 hr drive each way !. I attend trainshow in Barrie Ontario, every February, as vendor, to sell my " leftovers" from my estate and lot purchases to establish , next to my euro-stuff, Canadian and North American roads. Barrie is 2 hrs away, tables cost money, and because it's a 2 day event, hotelcost too. Therefore i use FB- marketplace the most. Quit paypal because of highway robbery concerning transaction cost and exchange cost with american $ - customers. I am NOT allowed by paypal to mention those cost to buyer ! Causing a loss what's not worth the potential sale anymore.
Hi Armand, My apologies for not reaching out to you ahead of making the video. I greatly appreciate not only your input but also sharing your predicament with buying and selling trains. Understood with regard to your feelings about PayPal. Thank you again for stopping by my channel! 😊
Mastic Long Island? What about Train land on Sunrise hi-way? Not close but used to be a good shop.
Yes, Mastic on Long Island. I did mention Train Land in the video. Used to be a good shop, correct.
When you remove one motor brush clip, the motor wont spin very well because there is just the one clip holding the motor together, therefore the motor is slightly not sitting together properly. If you were to squeeze together where the other clip goes, the motor will spin properly. As soon as you pop the other clip on, the motor will spin correctly.
Thank you for your input, but I do know that. There clearly was an issue with the motor and the axles that caused the overload bulb to blink both at home and the show. Thank you for watching all the same.
That Athearn H24-66 would be replaced by the Athearn SD-9
Thank you for sharing. I've got two SD9s as a matter of fact. 😉
Nice rebuild. Always good to see the older stuff running good. Thanks for sharing.
Nothing wrong with getting the older Athearns running like new. Glad you enjoyed.
@@masticshortline Thank you very much for answering my comments, I too enjoy rebuilding 'HO' those scale locomotives as well, It's too bad we don't have train shows here in the NYC metro area, Also, The retail stores here are a joke this city only has two train stores left which is forcing me to go outside the city for my hobby needs , I would like to come to Edison NJ when they hold the next train show, But, Which NJT train goes out there?
I only know of Red Caboose in Midtown Manhattan, I don't of any others in NYC. I don't know of any commuter rail lines that come near Greenberg, and its location makes it impossible for a local bus to stop near. Sorry.
@@masticshortline What a downer, And,Thank you very much for answering my reply.
I think I have 2 or 3 of those Manutua Pacific engines and I changed out the magnets and used neodymium (rare earth) in all of my Pittman (open frame) motors and it made a HUGE difference in performance and current draw. Now they will "creep" along the tracks. Cheers from eastern TN
Hi Rusty, and Cheers from Eastern Long Island, NY! Swapping out the magnets is always an option with the Pittmans. I use the little button magnets to seat them on top of the existing magnet. I call them Performance Enhancing Drugs, LoL. Thank you for your input, and thank you also very much for stopping by!
I have had luck with filling holes with CA, then tapping after it dries for those stripped screw situations.
It wasn't the issue of a stripped screw. There was nothing to screw into because more than half of the thing for the screw to go into was broken off.
That's a 1973 or '74 model.
From the looks of that model I'd say it's a post 1973 model that was the year Athearn started using fly wheels two years later the gear towers would be redesigned with removable plastic side frames.
It is a nice looking loco.... I would never have the power on a motor for that long if it is not spinning, you will cause damage to the windings.... I would have removed the motor from the chassis and cleaned it then put power to each brush to see if it was spinning.. then replaced it onto the chassis once it was working correctly.. then oil and grease all of the wheels and moving parts.. RE a 123 block why?.. if that is to hold the loco while you work on it why not just cut the centre out of a car wash sponge... or some other foam block etc.. Great to see it back on the tracks running once again.
Tim, To each their own. As for the 1-2-3 blocks, it's been on my mind for a long while, and I kept putting off acquiring them. Glad you enjoyed the video nevertheless.
I was just watching the Chessie repair and was wondering if that was you I sold those cars to. I’m happy you like them!
Were you kinda tucked in all the way in the back not too far from that immense layout where they ran the Disney train and the Acela train, and you also had several Athearn locomotives for sale? Yes, I like them immensely. Thank you.
@@masticshortline yes, that was me. The N scale club is usually across from me, but it was switched out that show.
Pleased to reconnect with you! How can I get more, if I wanted to?
@@masticshortline I’ll be at the November show in the same place. Not sure I have any more flat cars than what I had there in August, but please stop by say hi!
OK. Hope to make it there! 🤞🙏
That came out great. I had one like that I had to get rid of years ago, as it had connecting rod issues that I didn’t have the patience to fix. I noticed on that consist that you have a lot of flat cars like ones I sold in Edison last month. Did you get them there?
Hi Robby, Thank you very much. I can understand your frustration with the piston rods. Without the right tools (which I found on eBay), you can fix them; fortunately I haven't had the need to use the set yet! 🤞 Yes, I bought the flat cars at the Edison show.
Great to see her running!. The Chessie has always been a favorite!.
I'm pleased also. Glad you enjoyed it!
I actually recognize that loco from a vendor I know, which I thought was funny. I recently had two Blue Box locos that were DOA on purchase and both merely had the flywheels pushed in too far. Interesting to see gears installed incorrectly, as that’s pretty rare. Looks like a previous partial repair gone wrong. Nice job on the slow speed action you gout out of that beauty.
Hi Robby, Curious how you knew the vendor. I hope you were able to resurrect those two dead locos. Thanks for the compliment, much appreciated, and thank you for stopping by my channel!
@@masticshortline I recognize his price tags. I have bought a few used locos from him as well, if it’s who I think it is.
