10 Things I DESPISE The Most In RPGs
#JRPGs #RPGs
I believe we all can agree that, even when we like something so much, there are things that can be annoying in one way or another. And RPGs are no excepcion, after you get to play many games, you end up looking similar executions in several games, executions that you effectively DESPISE.

How Videogames Could Get Boring as You Get OLD
One thing I hate is some games having no respect for locations or gear. I'll explain. Having to drop your weapon to get a new one every 20 minutes because it has become out of level prevents you from building any kind of relationship with your gear or its mechanics. I like games where I can play at least 30% of the game with the same weapon before being forced to drop it, but even 100% of the game with the same weapon is great if done correctly like in Sekiro. (I know Sekiro isn't exactly an RPG but you get the point) The second think I dislike is not giving enough importance to places like in Pokemon, where you pass through each town a single time. I prefer how Nier Automata treats locations, having you come back to the same place after some time has passed to see how it has changed and what news the people have for you. It helps you build a relationship with a location an its inhabitants. Sadly most RPGs are linear in this regard. There are early game cities, and late game cities, and you usually pass through each city only once as you progress and rarely have reasons to re visit them.
@@OmegaMusicYT I consider Bloodborne as an RPG, and I am almost sure Sekiro is similar XD (I don't have that complex to define exactly what is or not rpg) Those are good points, yeah I get the idea, actually that is another thing I don't like at all, the kind of progression with weapons, you get into a new town and you need to prepare the wallet for new gear, it becomes trivial (this happens in many many RPGs)
I hate when rpgs try to incorporate action in their turn based systems Like how some of the early final fantasy games do and to a lesser extend mario and luigi
@@valletas haven't played newer FF since I left the series in 7 but I get the idea with Mario an Luigi. That is interesting, I liked those games because of those dynamics, I found them interesting going through the bottoms like when you use a copy flower in "partners in time" But yeah I get that they can be frustrating at moments.
@gamingodyssey5633 its not that i find them frustrating its just that bro... I dont want any action I love action games and i am actually developing an action platformer myself i just dont think turn based combat and action is a good mixture at all Thats like putting cereal into your coffe you either end with a bad turn based combat system or a bad action combat system few games have managed to find an in between
@@valletas 😯 now I get you, that is a new. Seems like a enjoy my cereal with coffee 😋. No, in all seriousness I never felt that while playing those games. Best of luck with your game o7
I've got one. When games place a hidden chest or item behind you after the end of a scene transition or cutscene. Every time you load into a new zone or finish a cutscene you have to spin the camera around or even backtrack to make sure there isn't a chest there. 95% of the time there is nothing but you still have to check because of the 5% when there is something there.
@@Adrian-xn3ss hahaha this reminds me a lot to the first donkey Kong and MegaMan X games, there were a couple of items literally to your lefts side while starting some stages XD
I can put up with basically everything but the one thing i really dislike is timed quests especially when they're main story related. As in like you have an x amount of time to do a certain quest or its just gone. Then again i guess this is just me complaining about Persona more than anything else. I tend to avoid those kinds of games since i would rather just like to take my time. I dont mind when its a bossfight with a timer like in ff7 though.
@@commissarsteele5852 yeh they are annoying, you are running against the clock all the time, I hate those moments when you cannot really enjoy every aspect of the game. It feels like they are forcing their way, so players dive into a second or more rounds playing those 100hr+ games XD
All valid points. I for one hate RNG. The game wants you to have something, but then refuses to give it to you. Even worse when it doesn't tell you where that thing might be at all. I just platinumed Lost Judgment (not an RPG, but the point stands), and I couldn't have done so without lots of guides. I even had to get items in battles OUTSIDE of the game to get items needed for the plat, and the items were not shown as rewards. Without a guide, it would be nearly impossible. Bad game design.
oh the classic RNG, i am in something like a middle point there, because for example if you play with dices and stuff like that, that is pure RNG, but there has been many discussions and the ways it works in games to encourage players to enjoy the system. There are some vids about that within Fire Emblem executions, old ones being true percentage, and newer games like a whased down version of RNG. But Yeh, i Get it, it is frustraiting when that 99% fails XD been there
A curious thing happened recently: I've been playing Bravely Default 2 and, from the reviews I watched, the game was to be quite dificult. I saw people complaining about that and when I started playing it on the hard dificulty I just didn't see it. Sure at first you have to be careful, but with some grinding and an understanding of the game mechanics it is quite simple to breeze through the game. I'm about 32 hours in and I still haven't completed it. Nice video man!
Yeah BD2 is an odd ball, I liked the game, but I have heard it turns worse as time pass (did not see that but oh well), what i can say, is that some late bosses are a bit random, tough and weak, but what takes places the cherry on top are the Ba'als, be prepared, those bosses are pure hell (side story ones) Glad you enjoyed the vid, thanks a lot for the comment :D
As someone trying to enter the genre, what game would you recommend to start DRPGs? Also, thank you for the video!
Legend of Grimrock 2
@@GooseYASH Thank you for the recommendation, I have actually played LoG2. Would you have any to recommend in the turn based style?
@@TenguXD hey glad you liked the video. It depends, within this "sub-sub" genre, undernauts has a really good story and it is a good beginning. If you wanna have something much more "childish" but brutal, etrian odyssey V A kind of modern approach, between wizardry/Isekai - stranger of sword city, and saviors of sapphire wings I would ask more about the kind of setting you want, if you are into western ideas, star crawlers. A bit more old school, legends of amberland, or even much more old school labyrinth of zangetsu (around 20 hrs, and same ideas as the original wizardry) I have a video named five reason why you should and shouldn't play drpgs, there is a small section where I just share different ideas, plus the whole description is filled with entries
Demon Gaze Extra is a good entry point until you want to try other Wizardy-like titles like Mary Skelter.
true, true, both demon gaze are good options if you don't mind anime and some fan service here and there. You can also set the difficulty, if you are having issues. And the second entry is way friendlier, but you can't make your characters, so they have defined tasks, unless you start to farm some skills, but it is better to save them till the very end of the game.
I'm definitely giving a mention to Ur-Child from Etrian Odyssey 2. It's the final boss of the post-game dungeon, so it stands to reason that the fight should be challenging. But Ur-Child is straight-up unfair. It has an insane amount of HP, many attacks that debuff your party or deal insane damage, and is accompanied by 2 respawning mobs that cause extra trouble. But just to be a dick about it, Ur-Child can heal itself for 25% of its life. That's significantly more than you can damage it for unless you raise your party just right to counter it. I only played the 3DS remake, but this thing was so frustrating, I was stuck for 2 weeks and couldn't do it even with a guide. I actually had to lower the difficulty, which changes its patterns to no longer heal itself, and I don't regard that as a genuine victory.
@@KazeMemaryu hahaha that is a classic, in every effin etrian Odyssey those last bosses are just nerve wrecking. Probably the most unfair was EO 1 the 6th stratum was just a horrible experience, it is so slow. A lot of portals, really unfair normal enemies, plus FOEs that can blast your entire team, EO 5 with all the portals and annoying binds in every corner, let's not talk about the last boss XD The 3500 floors in galleria, yeh all the post content bosses here are just mental in one way or another hahaha
Strange Journey was tough, but I finished it. Only played Demon Gaze 2, but I really liked the art style of some of the others. It's a genre I want to play more of.
@@734ch3r there are plenty of drpgs where you can continue, and yeah, they have interesting creative ideas. But most of the time people simply abandon them as they are unforgiving and old school. XD
2:26 sector Eridanus may have been ridiculous but nothing will ever beat Claret Hollows. The remake version may have been my worse experience but they said that the original is even worse.
@@soratheorangejuicemascot5809 oh yeh, those marvelous estarían odyssey end game stages XD they are lovely, the imperial bridge, those hollows, the mazes from the 3rd entry, I despise them all the same hahahah
That's why I don't have a lot of dificulties in these games, I tend to grind, whenever possible, for gear and levels as much as I can. Nice video man!
Hey Glad you found it interesting. Yeh, drpgs have acquired that popularity, In some cases it works fine, except when there is a cap or something like that.
What do you think about Labyrinth of Touhou spinoff? Peope told me that it aint a first person dungeon crawler but it really takes a good note on what made Etrian Odyssey good. I am abit hesitant right now on what RPG I should add to Steam. If I can't decide, I will just buy Yggdra Union when it goes sale and beat it for more than 6 times.
I know the game, but tbh I haven't play the entry, all i know is that it is a good RPG with solid ideas, but yeh, it is not a DRPG on its own, nothing like Etrian odyssey or something like that. on that front it looks rather simple. I guess it depends, i have played Yggdra and Blaze Union, so I would chose Touhou to expand the horizons, and check if it is effectively that good. otherwise a safe choice is Yggdra Next year most likely I will talk about some of their RPGs XD
@gamingodyssey5633 I havent played Blaze Union since I I kinda doubt on how it takes the route choices. I also played Gloria Union on emu. The game is good and got a nice maps that made it very fun. Although it does have some stuff I am not a big fan of like everyone has a signature card.
Blaze Union tells a good story about Gulcasa, antagonist that you find in Yggdra, and if memory works well, there were 3 sides on the story, but yeh it is easier than Yggdra, with some mechanics that let you know if you things will work out or neh. Havent played gloria, so not sure about changes on that one XD. I would look for the touhou gameplay and check if it is what i am kinda expecting, otherwise look back at the backlog :'p
I can chime in for Labyrinth of Touhou. You're right, it's not first-person but I would still consider it DRPG-adjacent since there's exploration and mapping, puzzle solving, and an occasional F.O.E. Visually it's kind of meh, but the combat and party building is where LoT shines, which might have sparked the Etrian Odyssey comparisons (I wouldn't call them that similar). You have a party size of 12 and can recruit around 50 members each filling their own niche, such as Reimu being a healer/buffer or Wriggle specializing in poison. This coupled with the fact that KO'd party members are out for the rest of the battle makes for some truly interesting fights where regularly swapping out front-liners is critical. Technically you can still out-grind the challenge, but you can level down your party. It's a well thought out system but some info is esoteric, so having the Touhou Wiki on hand can be useful. HOWEVER, if you're looking for a true Touhou first-person DRPG then may I suggest Touhou: Artificial Dream in Arcadia? That game is a masterclass love letter to both Touhou and Shin Megami Tensei. Highly recommend, plus it has a demo if you wanna try before buying.
@Dreaxslar ohh I already tried Artificial Dreams Arcadia. The bullet hell hacking is just too slow for my taste. It felt like a euroshmup for some reason.
Rip Ethan Winters lol
@@PrettyHappy7 haven't played re7. Ditched the series after 6 XD But I know his background a little
finally, video with title dungeon crawlers about dungeon crawlers and not about diablo clones, rogulites and twinstick shooters!
@@FredFunk-h1k hahahah sounds like it took a while to find them XD There is a funny comment down there saying that I have no idea what a first person dungeon crawler is :'p
Have you ever seen the game called UFO 50? I remember that it had a dungeon crawler rpg in one of its games. In that rpg, you fight like its punch out.
@@soratheorangejuicemascot5809 nope, I didn't know that one, XD but reading about it sounds intriguing, it's rare to see those "many in one" these days.
I see Knights in the Nightmare, I respond. I feel bad for missing this video as it is one of the best game I have ever played.
@@soratheorangejuicemascot5809 Glad to see you here XD Yeh, Knights in the nightmare, is an amazing game, lots of little details, but that learning curve :'p
I never enjoyed their rpgs, not even a single one. And god knows I tried. On paper their games are for me. I mean, I enjoy fan service, dungeon crawling, cartoony aesthetics, etc. The problem lies in the execution. There is always something in the mechanics that annoys me, up to the point where I lose interest completely. IF and CompileHeart = meh By the way I just discovered your channel, and browsed your stuff... Great work dude! You got yourself a new suscriber
@@jeffcourty6321 hey there !!! Yeh IF/CH are niche in multiple ways. They have improved XD, compared to the oldest approaches And thanks a lot for the support, really appreciated :D
"I was forcing myself" I never played Two Worlds, but those words sum up my experience playing Two Worlds 2 when I -pirated- legally purchased it with currency.
@@planescaped 🤕, so the second game did not improve, I guess lucky me that I did not even try XD Hahah I mean if paying is not owning then ... :'p
I saw pokemon diamond, and knew you were right. I downloaded a rom of it, this years to play all games throughout my childhood and damn nostalgia goggles are strong
@@thedude7319 hahaha I know right?? It has happened to me a good number of times too. Some are still holding quite well, but others.... What can I say XD
I saw the armadillo from "Pokemon Diamond" in the thumbnail and thought "Man, it wasnt that ... well ... okay. You may be right."
@@Nareas hahaha I had a really bad experience with that one, so, I am just going after that peculiar way to play it, probably the original version is amazing. Idk tbh, but I tried to play that thing and spent a decent amount of time. But the 4th time... losing my stuff after like 20hr pffft I was furious, because I had evolved a couple of denjus (if I remember they were named like that) that were not easy to befriend and the many items to evolve them XD
the voice acting in chaos wars and shining force 3 is something to behold 😂
@@professorpenne9962 yep, there are plenty with bat voice acting XD The first resident evil, rogue warrior, house of the dead, oblivion, back in the day I was not that fond of MegaMan X4, two worlds and the list could go on and on :'p At least some of them were so bad that it was hilarious 😂
I have fond memories of Eternal Sonata: colorful world and interesting combat, but I don't remember the story at all, which can be a good thing aparently hahaha. Paper Mario I haven't played, only the Mario RPGs in the DS, and they were quite good. The rest of the list I've never ever heard of, pretty obscure games to say the least. Well, at least you got to play some really bad stuff, which helps you to appreciate even more the better games.
Hey yeh, I was not fond of Eternal Sonata, it had an amazing gameplay, but its story did not sit well XD the thing with Mario RPGs is that seems like Miyamoto wanted to leave that kind of idea in the "Saga/partners in time/BIS/etc" and paper Mario was in the way, so that is the reason as far as I know. but yeh the other ones are good games. Playing bad games is a double edge sword, sometimes you find a lot of potential wasted and it is sad, but also as you said, I appreciate good games much more.
I wanted to like eternal sonata, I liked the combat, but at some boss areas there would be a big spike in difficulty. And yeah bosses are supposed to be tougher, but compared to the damage area enemies were putting out they were straight up broken. Which made grinding and leveling up so much more tedious. It got so frustrating!
I guess it would be worth getting on Switch too 👀
@@ranruun hahahah yeh, I will XD But that back log is just suffering T-T
That thumbnail made me laugh so much
@@sketchbookprimero that was the idea XD wacky and dumb Glad you had a laugh :D
The movie Saw was translated to Jogos Mortais (Deadly Games) in Brazil. It makes sense, so I understand. My problem starts when people willingly mistranslate things for political agendas.
@@734ch3r I have always found entertaining that Spanish speaking people can understand Portuguese by listening to it, at least by read and wild guess it sounds like (juegos mortales) XD And yeh, that is the most annoying thing tbh, at the end of the day I can live with some wacky translations/localization here and there, but when they change things just because.... Meh 😕
I basically completed it by 98%, because there are 2 achievements left, 1 of which I can't find information on TH-cam or internet search to help me with, over all 80% was enjoyable to play, 15% was tricky & found help with in internet search or TH-cam but I really found the ending annoyingly trick & dragged out with bonus part. But over all I could enjoy playing it again in 9 to 12 months.
Both types are interesting. Turn base (not JRPG/pokemon style - I hate it because everyone stands in the open) for story, small squads/heroes and chess-like thinking. Planning ahead and watch it unfold RTS to see real combat, adapt and see bigger armies.
@@Shamanteng yeh I get you I had not heard that about pokemon, I mean... It is just a turn base RPG, I kinda get where people wanna go with "strategy" but neh, otherwise pretty much any turn base RPG would be "strategy" to some extent. With turn base strategy I mean (the same): Disgaea/FE/Othercide/Limit Breaker the kind of chess game.
both styles are good. I guess it just depends on the mood. good ones on both sides imo are unicorn overlord, langrisser, c&c, disgaea, rise of nations, civilization, advance wars...I could go on. also yeah, tactics ogre reborn is amazing.
@@professorpenne9962 I really liked Unicorn but it can be a bit random at times too XD. But yeh, mood is a big factor. However most people don't really like turn base strategic/tactical games, as they are usually slow.
I like strategy games a lot but it certainly doesn't help in this day and age where people watch shorts, toks and put videos on 2X speed. almost zero attention span.
@@professorpenne9962 yup agree with that, there are also other ways to play them. At least with emulation, sometimes you can increase the speed, reducing the action times, just to keep with the flow. FFT a2 was a good experience because of that, because the Original version was a bit too slow tbh XD
@@gamingodyssey5633 FFT a2...makes sense why you would want to fast forward through that one lol
@@gamingodyssey5633 the FFT game on GBA blows imo. the dialogue taking 10 years is one of the least of its problems lol. how did they go from FFT which is amazing, then dump that out? same handheld that has golden sun and yggdra union.
I like both styles of strategy games. I played a lot of Age of Empires 2 on PC and Command and Conquer on my PS1. I also played Tactics Ogre on my PSP and Disgaea 1 and 5 on my PSP and PS4, just as some examples.
@@734ch3r Nice!!! I haven't played the Disgaea games T-T kinda itchy to play one or two, perhaps later down the line, will give them a check.
@@gamingodyssey5633 they have tons of mechanics and good humour. 5 I can recommend, and 7 is also supposed to be very good. 6 is supposed to be avoided, and the others are from the PS3, PS2 and PSP days.
@@734ch3r nice to know. I had heard that the 4th entry was considered as the best one, and yeh the same to avoid 6 XD will definitely give them a look later later, back log 🪵 has not been that friendly lately T-T
@@gamingodyssey5633 I would say leave D5 for one of the last you play. if you play D5 then D6...you'll see why most disgaea fans hate that game lol. the quality dropped like ton of bricks.
@@professorpenne9962 😯 oooh, hahaha oka then avoid that one, or perhaps start with that and then be surprised XD
I love battle for wesnoth... have been playing it on and off since I was a kid...
I like the game but I wish it had stuck to a turn based battle system instead of adding an action based system that can be switched to turn based mid battle.
@@roguerifter9724 I prefer the system like that, because some backtracking or some farming would be a bit tedious. But yeh I get you, it gets mid one in one and the another can get a similar treatment
Lost Odyssey
As the head of a tiny studio, I like watching these videos while working on our studios next title.
Knights in the Nightmare mentioned, truly impeccable taste. I remember playing that game, I wanted to program a graph visualization of the transoul relationships. The sacrifice mechanic is a true win for player engagement imo!
@@musang4437 the story behind each case is quite amazing, there was a book or something that (as far as I know) explained the kind of relationship between the different factions and all of that. But yeh, it is a really unfriendly game XD
@@gamingodyssey5633 Yes! There was an artbook which went into more detail into the relationships which gave you hints into which pairs would get mutual bonuses or debuffs. I remember getting hold of a scanned pdf of that book for reference for my project lol...
I like the Norrath games but would like them a lot more if Rogue was among the playable character classes because Rogue is my standard class in many Sword and Sorcery RPG setting including Everquest
Still waiting for the 7 games I haven't played :(
okay, but who is the slow loading character, I'll sub if ya tell
@@skyeshi3570 Duavlie, trails of cold steel 4 XD oh common I reviewed the game hahaha not proud of how I did it back then but meh I gotta learn
@@gamingodyssey5633 cool, and subbed
Grim Dawn, the spiritual successor to Titanfall? Do you mean Titan Quest? Hardly forgotten. In fact, it was pretty big as one of the best (and only) Diablo 3 alternatives back when. Kingdoms of Amalur is hardly forgotten as well. Might not have been received spectacularly (partly because it came out around the same time as Skyrim), but it had a good reception. A lot of people remember it fondly.
Titan Quest...not Titan Fall
@@beewell1600 you are right, confused the scripts with another thing and mixed titan fall assault. My bad.
Can't say I've played five of these, but Grim Dawn and Kingdoms of Amalur are hardly forgotten games. GD is still being updated today and KoA was huge on launch + it got a remaster a couple of years ago.
@@Outmind01 Not sure about Amalur tho. As far as I knew it was like so so, back in the day no one looked at it, and tbh I did not deeply check with this revisited edition. With grim dawn I knew I was stretching things, that is why I mentioned it.
@@gamingodyssey5633 People LOVE Amalur and as someone who wound up with it around launch I don't get it. It was like a somehow more generic and less soulfull Fable, nice visuals, that was about it. But people LOOOOVE that game.
@@malonshammer 🤔 not sure that is within the active community, at least the side I knew about is that it was like " aaah it is an ok game, nothing new," I mean putting it into perspective with Neptunia games, they are ok games but fans will always be fans. However if that is the case then my bad XD I knew the other side of the coin hahaha. Thanks a lot for the insight o7
Champoins of Norrath ! now thats right in the nostalgia
@@Hravokh hahahah as it has to be XD
I played Crimson Gem Saga on my PSP! Nice of you to make me remember that game. I still want to play Folklore one day, that game seems very unique and interesting. Thanks for the video \o/
@@734ch3r Hey!! Glad you found the video interesting. o7 And yep folklore is really interesting, quite unique and wacky in many moments.
My defense is 1239. I have three levels in Divine Blessing and 7 in defense boost. Using a Great Sword. The monsters tickle me.
Don't care about your review best game ever imo
I was expecting to see Vasteel on here.
I would love playing these Trails games but most of them are hard to find and when you do, expensive as hell! I tend to buy games on deep discounts or used. That's what my budget allows.
@@MBulldog1979 I get you, sometimes flea markets (garage sales) are the best options, but yeah, finding these games are not that common as Mario/Zelda/Fifa/RE/MH. Perhaps emulation if you can save for a PC, the one I had from 10 years ago (updated this year), was able to run PSP/switch games with no issues (was kinda randomly assy with spare parts, quite cheap) Or straight up console emulation/patch, same thing, you can find, PSP/PS4 relatively cheap. Those are the ideas on top of mind, to play these games. As they are not that heavy on resources. Or discounts as you say, but tbh I haven't seen that many on eBay or other places.
Then phisical is difficult for you, the printed copies are few and most people that buy are die hard fans that arent going to resell it. But, in the digital space, there are sometimes good prices on the Playstation Network or steam.
This is a brand new in-house engine built from the ground up for this game. It's not using sony's phyre engine from the previous games. I think it's a pretty impressive showing graphically for the first time it was used, and how such a small team was able to create it on the side while still having their yearly releases. On PC it looked way better, and I didn't have the enemies humping issue you encountered on switch.
@@jmporkbob so it was a new engine?? Oooh that explains a lot, my bad there, despite that yeh I like that part much more, previous entries were good, but the engine was running a bit out of steam. Personally I don't mind a 6 (score) as minimum (reason why I still get several switch games XD), but I have to be consistent, so most of times they were like 7.
@@gamingodyssey5633 If you are interested in action games, Ys 10 releasing in a couple of weeks is their 3rd game on this engine. (It came after Daybreak 2.) The animation work looks much improved from what I've seen compared to Daybreak 1, and especially previous games.
I won't be watching this for spoiler reasons, but I've heard very good things about this game. I hope you enjoyed yourself, dude!
@@734ch3r Hey, I believe it is safe to watch, I did not jump into "wows" parts, some random and nice scenes here and there tho XD But yep, it was an enjoyable journey. Waiting for the next one to continue.
Battle for Wesnoth mentioned! One of my favorite games ever, had such a great time on friendly pvp battles
Uhhh I hear tactics I'm in, nice video bro keep up strong
