Xenoblade Chronicles 2 - Review
#JRPG
Xenoblade C 2 is the third game of the "Xenoblade" saga, but as far as the story goes, there is no direct link with Xenoblade X, so it can be considered as the second XB game. and it shows that link once you reach late chapters. I would say that it has an interesting idea, where once in chapter 10 it makes snese with what happened in the first Xenoblade, but it is fair to mention that compared with the previous entres, this game took a much more "japanese" approach, regarding execution.

    As someone who mainly plays jrpgs I would say that the main aspect a game should have to be replayabe is buildmaking and total freedom in party composition. Sadly, Jrpgs tend to be heavily story driven games, meaning you are stuck with the companions the game gives you and their rol. And while the story usually makes up for the lack of freedom, jrpgs are LONG so depending on how early you can get on a ending route to see new content (if the game have multiple endings at all) replay can feel like a chore. In my experience, dungeon crawlers are the games that fit the bill in terms of Jrpg replayability, (Rpg too if you play wizardry or might and magic.) You can create the characters you want with the appearance you want, (some games even let you use custom portraits!) give them the class you want and later on you can change their class while keeping the skills they already learnt so their role in the party can evolve instead of be set in stone with their initial class. The story in most dungeon crawlers is loose enough to let you headcanon the story and motives of your party and often introduce tools or mechanics to further flesh out your characters (like alignments for example, which can affect gameplay or just flavor text). I know a lot of people find turn based combat boring but if you can get past that you realize that half the fun is all the planning you do to make the perfect party and seeing it in action. To finish my yapping session I will recommend some of my favorite dungeon crawlers which I consider to have a good replay value: >Labyrinth of Refrain and Labyrinth of Galleria. >All etrian odysseys. >Experience inc dungeon crawlers: Operation abyss and Operation babel, savior of sapphire wings and stranger of sword city. >Legend of grimrock 1 and 2 >Wizardry proving grounds of the mad overlord And some exceptions that are not dungeon crawlers but still Jrpgs with great replay value: >Disgaea >unicorn overlord >fire emblem (specially from awakening onwards) >Brigandine the legend of runesia >Wizardry Variants Daphne (this one is a gacha game but somehow maintains the spirit of Wizardry and makes it work)

    When I think back to games that I really loved I see two patterns: 1. Everything is so readily available nowadays. I'm in a very fortunate position, so that plays a role, but if I really want a game I'll just buy and download it and then a few hours or so later I can play it. No need to guy out, drive to shop x, see if it's in stock, then buy it and drive home. It's gotten a lot simpler and more easily accessible. 2. When I think about games that I love ... they've gotten A LOT bigger these days. I grew up with the SNes and my games were RPGs, but even the ones that I had were let's say 20h tops, but if I compare them to games that I play these days like the Mass Effect trilogy or Witcher 3 ... that's AT LEAST 3 times the time investment and the last time I played (and platinum'd) Witcher 3 it took me around 100h, so even more than 3 times. Then again many games also feel like one and done deals that you don't need to play more than one time and you're good, but again, easy access does the rest.

    I don´t like this type of discussion where we argue about what is and isn´t an RPG, but Monster Hunter? Should that really be on here, even if the website says it´s an "RPG"? If so, I think the term has become fundamentally meaningless at this point. What even is an RPG if not any game ever? Aren´t farming sims RPGs because you role play as a farmer? Or call of duty, because you role play as a soldier? You have to draw a line somewhere I think

    • @gamingodyssey5633
      @gamingodyssey5633 หลายเดือนก่อน

      @@ay9lx it began with that "role play" or at least that was the idea with old TRPGs, of course with added things like dices, levels skills, progression. And actually those are the things I consider as role playing elements. On that front monster hunter is an RPG, while it does not have proper direct levels, you increase armor and weapons levels. You have to manage skills, items, forge. And all of those things work based on numbers. On its own the term RPG is quite open, but people start to throw different categories, depending from certain elements, so there you have Crpg, drpg, jrpgs, wrpg, Trpg, but it has become quite thin because now you have Chinese games imitating japanese games or corean games also imitating japanese games. Or western games imitating jrpgs. Or confusing mixes like... fighting-dungeon-rpg - Madou monogatari Rogue-like, survival, tactical, Rpg Yeh it is quite confusing. But yeh it would be a good idea to work and document some of those ideas and try to explain them, at the end of the day this is just my opinion of course.

    One thing I hate is some games having no respect for locations or gear. I'll explain. Having to drop your weapon to get a new one every 20 minutes because it has become out of level prevents you from building any kind of relationship with your gear or its mechanics. I like games where I can play at least 30% of the game with the same weapon before being forced to drop it, but even 100% of the game with the same weapon is great if done correctly like in Sekiro. (I know Sekiro isn't exactly an RPG but you get the point) The second think I dislike is not giving enough importance to places like in Pokemon, where you pass through each town a single time. I prefer how Nier Automata treats locations, having you come back to the same place after some time has passed to see how it has changed and what news the people have for you. It helps you build a relationship with a location an its inhabitants. Sadly most RPGs are linear in this regard. There are early game cities, and late game cities, and you usually pass through each city only once as you progress and rarely have reasons to re visit them.

I just platinumed Lost Judgment (not an RPG, but the point stands), and I couldn't have done so without lots of guides. I even had to get items in battles OUTSIDE of the game to get items needed for the plat, and the items were not shown as rewards. Without a guide, it would be nearly impossible. Bad game design.

There are some vids about that within Fire Emblem executions, old ones being true percentage, and newer games like a whased down version of RNG. I'm definitely giving a mention to Ur-Child from Etrian Odyssey 2. It's the final boss of the post-game dungeon, so it stands to reason that the fight should be challenging. But Ur-Child is straight-up unfair. It has an insane amount of HP, many attacks that debuff your party or deal insane damage, and is accompanied by 2 respawning mobs that cause extra trouble. But just to be a dick about it, Ur-Child can heal itself for 25% of its life. That's significantly more than you can damage it for unless you raise your party just right to counter it. I only played the 3DS remake, but this thing was so frustrating, I was stuck for 2 weeks and couldn't do it even with a guide. I actually had to lower the difficulty, which changes its patterns to no longer heal itself, and I don't regard that as a genuine victory.

      I can chime in for Labyrinth of Touhou. You're right, it's not first-person but I would still consider it DRPG-adjacent since there's exploration and mapping, puzzle solving, and an occasional F.O.E. Visually it's kind of meh, but the combat and party building is where LoT shines, which might have sparked the Etrian Odyssey comparisons (I wouldn't call them that similar). You have a party size of 12 and can recruit around 50 members each filling their own niche, such as Reimu being a healer/buffer or Wriggle specializing in poison. This coupled with the fact that KO'd party members are out for the rest of the battle makes for some truly interesting fights where regularly swapping out front-liners is critical. Technically you can still out-grind the challenge, but you can level down your party. It's a well thought out system but some info is esoteric, so having the Touhou Wiki on hand can be useful. HOWEVER, if you're looking for a true Touhou first-person DRPG then may I suggest Touhou: Artificial Dream in Arcadia? That game is a masterclass love letter to both Touhou and Shin Megami Tensei. Highly recommend, plus it has a demo if you wanna try before buying.
