VHS to Digital Converter - Gefen Upscaler Review #middlesiggy
Update - I no longer recommend this device, as it is now almost impossible to find and personally, I would just stick with the Yitrox.
If you are having issues finding the Yitrox they sell out from time to time, this happens once or twice a year. The only suggestion I currently have is to wait a month or two and the manufacturer seems to produce more and make them available.

This is a review of the Gefen composite to HDMI upscaler vs the Yitrox upscaler.
Overall the Gefen TV scaler is a high quality device, and worth the price if you have it in your budget.

Thanks for an informative and relatively simple explanation and presentation of the options. I have purchased the Yitrox Upscaler (and power supply) as well as the Elgato HD60X to convert all of my VHS home movies. If I don't have the motivation to do all of the post conversion editing to get to 16:9 and avoid the stretching of my 4:3 VHS videos, are there any downsides to just doing the output as 4:3 in 1080P definition? That does seem to be the simplest path while still getting good quality conversion.
I enjoyed your tutorial immensely. I was wondering about editing, though. I have several 3-4-inch reels that need to be reviewed, dated and then digitized in chronological order. Does the unit allow editing to eliminate overexposure/dark sections or am I looking for a much more expensive digitizer to do this?
Do these devices work for Sony Hi8 recordings? Thank You!
A 3 hour VHS tape when converted to 1080 P using different video capture card and Up scaler device ended up being about 75 GB file size in mkv format on windows 10. Is there a way of reducing file size in the Elgato capture card?
Hi. I have a NTSC regular VCR and a PAL VHS tape/video i need to convert to NTSC. Can i connect my NTSC VCR to this device, play my PAL VHS and convert it to NTSC? Thanks in advance!!
Never heard anyone call 1080p "one thousand and eighty" before.
Many thanks for your honest review, much appreciated.
My pleasure!
Hi im in Ireland so whats for pal format?
Joseph, PAL is a different resolution and frame rate, to be honest I don't have any PAL devices, but I recently tested this upscaler here SoundBeast and found it to be pretty good amzn.to/3E2iE7i and it states it supports PAL.
Hi will it be a hd quality just asking???
Ideally, there should be an all-in-one device that has both a VHS deck and a monitor, that can convert the VHS to digital without the need for connecting to external devices, like now obsolete VHS cameras and recorders etc.
That would be nice.. given they made VHS to DVD, why not your idea.. Thanks for watching
Hi give the link to method 3 and where I can buy it thanks very much.
Currently the Yitrox is sold out by the vendor. So you will have to wait a little bit (roughly a month) before they put more out. It should still be the link in the description. I do my best to keep up with the links if the sell out.
Hi would vhs to hd dvd look unreal?
I am not a fan of the MPEG2 encoding any more which is what a DVD is. Personally I would not go that way.
Joseph try this upscaler, I have just recently tested it and like the result it is close to the Yitrox. amzn.to/3E2iE7i
i ordered the diamond vc500
Great video! If you're looking to enhance video quality, check out Nero's Recode Stick for digitizing VHS tapes and the Nero AI Video Upscaler for improving video resolution.
Thanks for the suggestion!
I've got a Canopus AVDC110 which i run into my computer and directly into Adobe Premier Pro CC version 2024 for VHS tapes which works,,,,,kinda ok, but not what I'd like,,,,,, I would like to know in your opinion what 'build' type format would be best to use for the best results to build in adobe media encoder for transfer to a thumb drive ? Any personal favorite file types?
Hi, I would use some of the common MP4 universal formats, I use Vegas for my editing, and when I render my videos I will use some 1080p 24+ FPS (depends on the original source), and I prefer a HEVC (H.265), then H.264. Audio is 192Kpbs, 48,000Hz 16 Bit AAC.. Hope that helps.
@@MiddleSiggysDigitalWorld thanks for reply, I've been using h264 for pretty much universal acceptance, the Adobe offers so many different conversion files, it's just about 'overwhelming', I've done lots of my own super-s videos and they turn out to be pretty good when transfered over to h264 and 1080p, but the other regular VHS things just aren't what I would like to see, and not sure I want to get one of the 'upscalers' ( and unsure about what to get or where ) Guess I'll just keep watching and listening ! Thanks for reply and good luck with your channel !
Thanks, appreciate the kind words! I plan to post more updated videos as I am able.
This is awesome! We lost my Dad on NYE and digitizing old video and pictures has been top of mind. Thank you.
I'm sorry for your loss, I hope you find as many wonderful memories as I have.
What an excellent summary - very informative and just the one I was looking for! I have a bin full of 40-year-old Super 8 sound home movies that I want to record electronically and also do some commentary. After reviewing this, you helped me decide to attempt recording my movies from my original projector onto a screen and film with my electronic video camera. If it doesn't work, I'll reconsider some of your suggestions.
Thanks, I'm glad it was helpful! Let me know how it turns out for you.
Should have had an option to capture DLOG and then you can color correct afterwards. And likely Kodak didn't make this thing. They license their name out to someone.
For "professional" options, I revisited the Moviestuff website and as of today, they appear to be no longer in business. They do however, made their website into their own special "museum" website. Just for kicks, I wanted to look at the a Tobin and the owner himself is retired.
I got a stand alone elgato video capture tool but after I got 2 hours of recording it didn’t save the file. How are you using their software?
Hi, I am not using the Elgato for my capture, I ended up always using OBS and setting up a 4:3 and a 16:9 profile. I'd recommend you check out OBS.
Great review. Thanks!
Glad you found it helpful, thanks for watching!
If I don't use an upscaler and digitize my videos, is there a way to "fix it in post" as they say? To edit and upscale after I have the digital file?
You can change things in post, but using the upscaler does a few things for you, 1) it will remove any interlace, and will smooth the video, and it will upscale the initial video on the first pass. You can use software to upscale the video after the fact, but I have found that to very time consuming and just not worth the time. Thanks for watching!!
Thank you for sharing! I tried a so called pro converter company , I gave them 2 separate movies to convert to separate disc What I got was one disc with part of both movies oit and only one reel of with half of my movies One was from Vietnam. So I have been searching for a good converter so I can do my own digitizing. Great presentation
That would be so frustrating. I'm glad you found this helpful, thank you for watching!
does anyone know what the voltage is I live on Israel and need the volage for 240V also what plug does it come with
Hi, the unit I had was a US only 120v power supply, but you should be able to use an adapter or possibly a different local adapter that supplies the same DC voltage.
The recommended vhs to digital upscale device are unavailable. Is this because of Christmas? Where can i get an alternative if they don't restock?
This happens a few times a year, and yes it is probably because of the winter season, I know more people are watching my video during the later part of the year, and that is when I was doing this for myself. I have found that you need to wait a month or so, and the manufacturer will put more out. give it a bit.. Thanks for watching.
Thank you for a good video explanation to this process. Sadly the recommended YITROX Upscaler is no longer available which you note in comments but the other choice in component only and my VCR can't do that. Still a great topic. Maybe an update video on another choice? The Gefen is gone as well.
Thanks for the kind words, your feedback has been noted. YITROX tends to have periods where it is unavailable but then comes back, I'd keep checking.
I am looking for a video you did some time ago detailing the Dazzle Red unit for conversion. How can I find it again?
I don't think that was me, I used to have a Dazzle but that was many years ago.. Either way thanks for watching.
Is it true it doesn't work for Windows 10 or 11 like so many are saying in amazon? I dont think my old laptop running win 7 works anymore.. 😅
I have been using the things I am suggesting on both Windows 10 and 11, I have not had a Windows 7 system in a while, but I don't know why it would not work.
What about using AI to enhance the digital video copy in another TH-cam video ?
Great suggestion, thanks for the feedback!
Thank you for the video. The conversion has been on my mind and now I will go forward vs outsourcing. Planning on an Elgato HD60. I am using a PC laptop and have 2 basic questions. 1) what do i need to use the video card? 2) For a 2 hour video, can a PC hold that much in memory?
If you are going to use a laptop, I would suggest the HD60X <- X (The X is the external device). The HD60X is where you will plug the HDMI cable in from the Upscaler device, and it will convert the signal and then you can use software like OBS Studio (it is free) to do the capturing. I plan to do a video on this in the coming month if you get stuck.. As for storage, it will depend on the format and bit rate but for a rule of thumb call it 1GB per 25 Minutes (This can vary a lot based on the video and like a hundred factors)... If you start to run out of space, consider getting another external 1TB drive on Amazon and storing the videos there. Hope that helps
Thank You so much. I know nothing about this and am going to do it myself. I appreciate your honesty regarding equipment to purchase. Great video to help us.
You're welcome! Glad you found it helpful.
I have a brand new computer, I bought the upscaler you recommended on your video and the Elgato HD60X and I cannot get it to get a signal. I have watched video after video on how to get this to connect and it will not find a signal. I have actually tried two different devices. My boss bought a set too. It's hopeless and a waste of time.
What are you plugging the device into? The Upscaler is an output device that requires some form of capture card. Are you using a capture card, or are you trying to just plug it into another HDMI port on your PC? Most HDMI ports on PC's are output only and not an input device. Let me know and I will see if I can help
This guy uses Voicemeeter. Respect.
Thanks!
Would you please let me know the brand and model of the exact power supply you mentioned in the video?????
Hi, sure thing! Here's a link to the power supply used in the video (included in the description): UL Listed 5V 3A 2.5A 15W Universal AC/DC Adapters Power Cord with Multi Tips - $15 - amzn.to/3Ym1jv5 Thanks for watching!
Bought Yitrox and separate power source. Turned on, connected VCR, GOT SCROLLING BLUE SCREEN , or nothing. No corrective instructions. Feel scammed.
What are you using for your capture device? is the Blue Screen coming from the VCR signal? I am trying to understand how you are getting a rolling screen, that seems like a horizontal sync issue.
Thanks for your review! I have the Reelz and had a bad experience. I converted maybe 30 reels of Super 8 and 8mm. The take up reel failed on me and needed to be nudged. I can deal with that but then it totally bricked. I had to use the USB power supply and then still it wouldn't boot past the title screen. I got a discount on a replacement so I may try again rather than getting a wolverine. Thoughts?
The wolverine and the Kodak are very close in quality I found, I cannot speak to the bricking (send that back) but on the take up reel, make sure you have the film in the track properly, there is a little wheel in the flip down that pulls the film, and I found a few times my film was not seated all the way, and it would get stuck. I also found with some of the larger reels the weight was a bit much for the take up reel. It got the job done, and I liked the result, but to be honest I don't think my unit is going to last 60+ years like my grandfather's kodak.
I have done all the old school methods with my film, and what you said was 100% correct. I am now considering going with the new equipment. Sure, it will cost almost $400, but I have to ask myself two things. First, does anyone else care except me? Secondly, if I wait, the film stock will continue to degrade and in time it will be impossible to capture, so should I go ahead for the sake of the future generations who MIGHT care? I don't know. But I did want to bring up one issue...The film itself might be dirty. So is there a safe way to wash it prior to digitizing it, so that the images would be as perfect as possible?
I have seen a few videos on here about cleaning the film, but that was outside my expertise, and given how sensitive some of our memories can be, I did not want to lead anyone down a path. But there are some things out there.
Just a Super presentation loved it 👍🌟🥰🥳
Thanks so much for watching and the kind words!
Excellent video. I have JUST used your option #2 for the first time, then watched this again. I have two questions. 1) Does the volume set on my PC while recording affect the volume on the finished digital copy? 2) Can I use option #3, the converter upscaler, later to convert from my new digital copy to the better quality of #3, or can you only use that from the VHS? Thank you so much for this video and looking forward to your response.
Ok but does it work for Mac
It can work for a Mac Yes!, I am trying to get ahold of one to demonstrate in a new video I hope to have out some time this month
Question I'm recording off a camcorder and it only has the black wire so it's mono audio how do I configure it to come out from both sides of the speakers or headphones?
You could buy a RCA Y Splitter like this amzn.to/4ajfsA3. It will still be Mono sound just ported to Stereo
Thank you so much. Best presentation I've heard. VERY clear and easy to understand.
Thanks for your feedback, I'm glad it helped!
Does the Yitrox convert old Disney VHS? I have the originals for my children I want to share them with my grandchildren. They don’t have vhs players.
I have never tried to do real movies or tapes with possible copy protection.
Man you are awesome! Thank you for such a good unbiased review of the products and explanation of the procedure.
Glad I could help, thanks for watching!
Hi do you have a video on how to use the 3rd option for a laptop? I want to make sure u buy the right products.
Hi, I don't but I appreciate the feedback, it's been noted.
Outstanding performance. Thank you very much for this comprehensive lesson on how to convert old super 8 films
Thank you very much, I appreciate your kind words.
Great video sir, but is it possible to take a digital video and convert it to a 16mm?
Technically you could... It's the same as the old school method but with a digital projector and a 16mm film camera. You'd need trial and error, a working 16mm camera... and 16mm is expensive.
That is outside my knowledge.. Very interesting question.. Hope you find the answer, and share if you do.. Thanks for watching
Hi, I recently purchased a new Laptop, an HP Envy with Windows 11, and finding out that some hardware / software don't work well with windows 11 including Elgato Video Capture (and Windows Media Player...) Anyway, Elgato support was great but we just couldn't get it working. So I've seen a product called ClearClick that records analog video and saves it to an onboard thumb-drive or SD card. No computer required so, I hope, no windows 11 issues. So my question is.... are you familiar with ClearClick and, if so, any related comments of recommendations? I really appreciate your videos. Thanks, Tim
Dang, none of these support scart.
Question: Does the software allow to you to add text comments to the converted video. For example, names of people or places in the video?
Just seeing this video and I love the idea of doing it old school, so I purchased a kodak ektasound moviedeck 265 on ebay. Took a chance on an untested one since it was the only one available with sound. Unfortunately, the film will not load onto the take up reel. When I insert it into the film slot, I meet a good bit of resistance, but am able to push it in. After pushing a few feet of film in, it still does not get taken up on the reel. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated!!
You could try to clean the gears and rollers, sometimes the oil inside can get old and gunky. I had to do that with mine.. These things are nearly 60 years old
@@MiddleSiggysDigitalWorld Thanks for the reply. I appreciate your time
Hi! Thanks for the video. I am trying to convert VHS to Digital (family videos), but I cannot buy the UL-listed 5V 3A 2.5A 15W Universal AC/DC Adapters Power Cord with Multi Tips. Which will be the European equivalent? What should I look for when buying an alternative?
I would buy the upscaler and it will come with a power supply. You might be ok, but if you still get noise then just get a certified power supply for your country
