    Do you have any suggestions for when the hub is no longer detected by the Mac? The light turns on but nothing else happens.

    • @JeffsWay.
      @JeffsWay. 18 วันที่ผ่านมา

      Is this a Satechi hub? None of the ports on the front work, or is the SSD drive not being recognized? Maybe both? Try taking the drive out, and see if the ports now work? I have a feeling either the drive failed, or the hub itself failed. Let me know what you find.

    • @animationministry
      @animationministry 17 วันที่ผ่านมา

      @@JeffsWay. Yes it looks like the same Satechi hub in this video. It worked for a while when I first got it, then it randomly disconnected and eventually stopped all together. None of the ports work, not even the headphone and doesn't recognize the 2TB storage installed. If I plug an external hard drive to the hub the light comes on the external but nothing happens.

    • @JeffsWay.
      @JeffsWay. 17 วันที่ผ่านมา

      @@JeffsWay. Yeah, it seems like it failed. I was kinda confused because it still powers on and can send power to other USB devices. I'll try removing the SSD and see what happens. Thanks for your suggestions, I appreciate it!

  • @JeffsWay.
    @JeffsWay. 19 วันที่ผ่านมา

    Someone mentioned, "shouldn't the test be done with the hub plugged in"? This person deleted their original comment, but it does bring up a valid point. When I tested, I assumed the WiFi issues were caused by the hub physically blocking the signal. I hadn't thought about the hub potentially causing electrical interference to the WiFi signal. So, good point, and something to be aware of.

    I have the similar dock with M2 SSD slot. It worked great for a while but SSD eventually died after a month or so. The problem is the dock has very poor thermal dissipation causing the SSD to overheat and burnt. Heat has no where to go but up causing thermal problem. Thank you for the video. Very useful as I’m planning to get a Mac mini soon and intend to buy one of these too. I’m a hobbyist photographer and I was wondering whether the heat issue is related to having multiple applications running fairly intensive tasks for an extended period? For example, my current 2017 MacBook Pro gets really hot if I’m processing a queue of large photo files through software like DxOPureRaw4. The files are located on an external hard drive so the laptop needs to access them there. Have you tried that, or maybe some extended video editing?

    • @JeffsWay.
      @JeffsWay. หลายเดือนก่อน

      For my use, the hub has worked fine. I'm generally editing less than 30 minutes of 4k video. I have not experienced any of the issues that some have reported, however that's not to say they are not there. They may just be using the hub in a way different than I do? I have switched to a pre built gaming PC over the Mac Mini for my video editing. The added performance and increased storage has been really nice. Of coarse, this also means having to adopt a new video editing program. Having only really used iMovie, I settled on CapCut Pro due to being fairly easy to use, and also affordable.

    The WIFI issue seems to be due to a bad batch of circuit boards on some units leading to RFI interference. Yours seems to be a good one. I bought one last week from Amazon UK and its unusable. It is nothing to do with physical obscuration of the MacMini WIFI antenna as the impact on WIFI is not present with the Satechi disconnected. When connected my 120Mbps wifi speed reduces to somewhere between Kbps and 20Mbps. I have returned mine to Amazon.

      @@MasterMind187b According to the Satechi website, "For best network experience when using the Stand & Hub, connect to 5GHz frequency when using Wi-Fi". Maybe they meant to say 2.4 GHz? It's always been my understanding that 5 GHz is more susceptible to interference than 2.4 GHz, so I would assume you're right about that. I still think it's a good product, and works extremely well for my needs. I do use Ethernet though, because it's available where I have it located. Thanks for the info!

If this is the case, we recommend connecting your Mac Mini to the 2.4Ghz network (v.s 5Ghz) for optimal performance." And next time, if you want test these things. dont use an internet speed test. 5ghz can go up to 1gigabit. 60mbit is nothing. use iperfv3 server and then you should do the testing.

      @@MasterMind187b Thanks for this. Rather than try another hub I have connected the Mac to the internet via a network cable. This seems to be a workable solution - but still reduces network bandwidth from 120Mbps to 45Mbps.I will gie it a go for a while. I like the rest of the features of the Satechi though the speed of the SSD is less than I would have expected. I personaly didnt get satisfactory results with the 2.4gHz wifi. - maybe its due to low signal strength.

    It’s terrible! No external power. Draws from the computer. If you REALLY use it, and its ports, it over draws and it drops off with the HD dismounts. Terrible design.

      You are correct, this is a non powered hub. There are certain limitations to that. I would expect under heavy usage you're going to start hitting it's limits. In my brief testing, I'm simply using the hub in a way that I think the average person would, and looking for problems. For heavy use, I think using the ports on the Mac Mini, or a quality powered hub would be a better solution. Thanks for bringing that up, it's a valid point that people should be aware of.

      @@JeffsWay. it wouldn’t be so bad if the SSD wasn’t cycled mounted/unmounted just because I plugged in a keyboard and SD card. Anyway, yes something to aware of. BTW: more problematic was I never got a reply from them when I discovered the issue. Multiple attempts I got nothing back. Just a disgruntled buyer.

    Helped me decide if I should buy the 44 or the 47!

    • @JeffsWay.
      @JeffsWay. หลายเดือนก่อน

      The MT-44 is designed to be used on the floor, where the MT-47 is a desk tripod. I think for the desk, the MT-47 is as good as it gets. For a floor tripod, if you want a lighter weight tripod with a phone mount, the MT-44 is excellent. If you want a slightly heavier duty floor tripod get the MT-79. All 3 can be used as selfie sticks, but I like the MT-47 best for that.

    it may be that the hub interferes with reflected signal or twin-aerial reinforcement signals etc and only affects the speed tests when signal is low, or multiple devices are in the collision domain (hidden client problems)

    • @JeffsWay.
      @JeffsWay. หลายเดือนก่อน

      You're correct. I was thinking of trying different testing methods. There's a possibility that signals from above or below could be affected more? Thanks for watching!
