The Start of Serious Rot Fixing on my 1980's 30ft Catamaran
This video shows how to fix a plywood boat. More accurately it shows how I started to fix some of the rot on my plywood catamaran. I cut out the rot and replaced it with new wood, watch the video to find out how!

Here’s all the rot I found in my 1980s timber catamaran

This video briefly summarises the job of removing the catamaran from the water, getting the tarp on and stripping it down. I then do a detailed walkthrough and compare what the catamaran looked like when I first got it to what it looks like now. Please subscribe as more updates are coming soon! The carpentry will be the subject of the next video!
Tearing apart my broken catamaran

Hey all! I bought an old timber catamaran that I have been restoring. This is a video of tearing it apart. I will be posting an update every few weeks. I am now well underway with rot removal and carpentry, can't wait to share!

You are braver than I am, but when you don't have money but have time projects like this can turn out amazing
what's the length of the cat?
29.5ft 👍
totally safe, as long as it never leaves the backyard.
such unwise idea, even a super condition boat is a pit of money, and usually not wrth any invest, but this is not a boat anymore and even free it is not a gift. In fact, if you picked it up for free you would still have made a very big gift to the "owner". Drop this asap, it belongs to scrap, at least did not lost much yet.
100K, lol, its is not even worth 1K in this condition.
nice boat!!!! don't listen to the negative people.. you can do this! 4 years ago i also bought a catamaran everybody said was garbage. now they all wish they owned her. the best part is that by the time you finish her you will be one with that boat. you will know every square inch of her. keep going and don't give up. but be a little nicer to her. boats are girls and need to be treated tenderly and with care. give her love and she will give you love back. good luck
Walk Away.... Actually Run
Find a the bits that aren't rotten.
So you literally had a crane there..... why not lift the mast down??? Plus, 6k..... ooof. I hope it works out for you, but ooof!!
Good luck my friend. You have a project on your hands
Great idea, buy a scrap boat and create a You Tube Channel and have everyone pay for it and you get a FREE boat. Yea right.
It was the "infinity toilet"...... that sold ya, isn't it???
Just hold the piece of ply up and mark it instead of paper
YOU PAID 6K FOR THAT? 😂😂😂
Your title is wrong…. i think you wanted to write: you were paid 6k to take this crap
Nothing is more expensive than a cheap boat.
Nothing more expensive than a free boat.
you will find an oscillating saw a very handy tool to use in this project, where you start to cut out rot , chamfer the hole edges so a new piece will fit with a maximum glue surface, scarf all joints for max strength
I just can't believe somebody spent 6K for this!! 🤯
So everything is rotten and needs to be replaced. The whole boat that is. Make yourself comfortable you will live in the boatyard for years, and spend more then 100k to fix it.
Sorry dude... That thing is done. BIP...burn in place
Well it didn’t fold in half when it was lifted so that’s something
Well, it's not a Lagoon 450...
I always use the piece I cut out as a template instead of using the paper or cardboard love your videos should be longer
Good luck! Subscribed. Can't wait for the next episode
👍
I love your optimism 😮😊😂 been there done that!
Rotten crap
You would have been better off just starting from scratch.
it looks like you bought a $100 catamaran for $6000
The start of a adventure or the start of a nightmare, you decide. I tell you what though the knowledge you will gain from fixing this pile of junk will be pricless. And i mean pricless. as in you couldnt pay for it, like at all. You cant buy it. It is the most valuable thing to a human. But its also alot of work. Rember you will do it right.... because your gonna do it twice.
Im subscribing after seeing your first video and now this. I think you have it in you to get it right
Hahahaha you spent 6k on a boat worth 0
I did a similar project with a 40' cat back in 1979. What I lacked in skill I made up for with enthusiasm.
thats totally the kind of fixing I can do :)
That damaged are too scary for me who know nothing about fixing stuff. But, I love your spirit, and I know you can do it brother!!!
I remember seeing this boat online (and local to me) a few years ago. You’re pretty gutsy taking it on. I went on to buy an epoxy/glass & ply tri that had it’s own share of rot. Nothing on the scale of this cat though. I’ve only just finished the refurb & refit and I’ve learnt a lot, spent a ton of money and time. I reckon since you’ve got the space to build, it could be worth building a new cat from kit or taking over someone elses kit build. At least then at the end of all your effort and outlay you’ll have something safe to sail, of considerable value and sellable.
It’s not worth it trying to cut the new sections of plywood to match the odd-shaped rotted edges. Just cut straight lines, like repairing drywall.
Well, this pretty much helps convince us we need a boat. Planning our sailing lifestyle now!
Worth a thumbs up just for dropping the mast.👍🤙🤣🤣🤣 Subscribed !!!
I'm gonna check back with you in 2030
I agree just found this channel. This guy is screwed. Not a good project
That thing will never float
WOW, I HOPE ITS ALL ALUMINUM, YOU MIGHT GET A THOUSAND BACK IF YOU SCRAP IT! THE SS MINNOW WAS IN BETTER SHAPE AFTER IT CRASHED.
Let’s go! I subscribed.
I am an optimistic person but don't spend anything on that. It's not even worth sinking. Start over get a good bones boat & go from there.
Wtf walk away !
The toilet looks great ....... the rest will be a lot of work ....... make it a rustic look .... ,,,,,
Slap it together with as little cost possible sail it for a year close to shore ... sink before you need to spend more than $2,000. on a single repair after that year of fun sailing it. I hope you find sunken treasure while you are sailing it. ,,,,,,,,,,
Fix it, Rebuild it and sail it around the World!! You got this!!
I hope you’re as good at replacing wiring as you are of tearing it out.
Mate,as a professional boat builder,i can see no positives with this cat,you could build yourself a new one cheaper, shes too far gone sorry to say.
But if he's prepared to spend $150k on it, he could have a $75k cat 😂
Also a boatbuilder, I would agree 100% with you, I would look to find a new design he could reuse the rig and other stuff on, may be Mike Waller or one of the Roger Simpson cat, be worth more when he is done and much much less time__ this one is a lost cause.
Not a boat builder but all I can see is a funeral boat for viking twins that died on the same day...
