Why Won't WTT Change the Camera Angle? | Is the 45° Angle the Best Angle for Table Tennis?
Table tennis camera angles have been a highly debated topic ever since WTT decided to switch to the side angle, a decision that the majority of viewers have criticized. For almost four years, there has been continuous feedback urging WTT to change the camera angle, but they have yet to do so. In this video, I will dive into this controversy and analyze why WTT hasn't taken any action.

Table tennis need better quality umpires | Umpire shouldn't ask player what the score is

During the WTT Contender Taiyuan 2024, the chair umpires lost focus and didn't saw who won the point. She asked the player on court what is the score. The ads and sponsors will never be absolutely clear on the 45 degree angle unless the camera is high enough. Usually the enough height is a bird eye view which is not good for spectator experience

    I am for the 45 degree angle. I believe the obstruction issue would be mitigated if the cameras are higher. At the same time, though, the sponsorship logos on the floor for a left/right camera option will indeed be a challenge. One possible solution is instead of actually having the logos directly on the floor, use technology to alter the logo position based on whether the left or right cameras are being used so regardless of which one is used, viewers get to see the floor logos in the right orientation.

    • @hendersonweinstein1382

      Another idea i have is using light projectors to shine the logos on court which can be tilted freely rather than a fixed drawing on the floor.

    I like the side angle (14:13) less than the 45 degree angle (8:57,10:00). If they must use the side angle then they should bring the camera closer to the floor as then we can see the vertical movements of the ball better.

    Another thing is the audio..... stop using over the top noise gates to make the ball sounds and foot stomps super dry !!!!! A bit of echo or room sound is way more exciting. Listen to the audio from 2017 worlds !!!! It sounds like the game was played in the colosseum !!!!

    I like the back high up angle, followed by 45 degree angle. A bit of side is cool if only used a bit. But the main thing is frame rate !!!! Its a super fast game with a tiny ball !!! Hd and frame rate is king !!!

  • @agniveshizm
    @agniveshizm 4 วันที่ผ่านมา

    The solution is AI and image processing. The broadcast stream should be processed to optimize for ads/sponsors, regardless of the angle. The physical floor logos should just cater to the spectators at the venue.

    I think China is really doing a great job with providing the best angles. I mean a lot of tournaments provided the best 45 degree angle like those from Macao, Chongqing and Xinxiang were perfect. If i have to be honest they also aced the side angle. Side angle is bad but China makes them look good. This shows that the country organizng the event is also important.

    When I hear people defending the side angle it makes me cringe so hard. Yes u can have your own personal preference about your favourite angles but please, DON’T TREAT IT AS THE MAJORITY. Lmao it’s so obvious that people who “LIKE” the side angle are the real minority. You go on social media TH-cam, IG FB and everyone is complaining about the side angle. Out of 10 comments about camera angles 9 of them will say they hate it. That 1 who say they like it is the minority and usually very little validations. You hope on Reddit or TTD you can see people discussing about how bad the side angle and not one single thread defending the side angle. Why is that? Cuz it just suck stop living in your delusions!!!! These people defend saying that those people hating the side angle are just yapping cuz the majority of ppl they know have “no issue” with it. Brother there’s a clear difference in “no issue” and “hate”. People who has no issue with the side angle will also have no issue if the matches were showed on the back or the 45 angle. They are fine with basically any angle WTT feeds them even if the cameras were on the floor. But u don’t see that many people hating on the back of the 45 do you? So why suddenly so much hate for the side? Cuz its an awful angle DUH!!!!! WTT has singlehandedly confirm that the side angle was a bad mistake since they switch all angles the the 45 degree accept table 1 like what was mentioned in the video, legal obligations. Heck it would be stupid for the organization to change an angle that “MAJORITY” likes to please the “MINORITY”. The depths that people go to defend a pathetic angle with baseless claims amazes me.

    Some of the 45 angles shown in this video I really like and feel it is the best for example the one at 0:24, 2:31, 9:01 and 13:36 . But WTT will probably never use these angles as it will never show ads properly. Those from the WTTC are not the best but good enough. Better than the side any day. Hope WTT uses that in the future.

  • @starking1187
    @starking1187 5 วันที่ผ่านมา

    Yes please make the 45 degree angle the default view. I absolutely hate it when WTT finally decides to show us the 45 angle for certain points and it ends up being a let service then they just show the point from the side again. And even if there is no let the point is usually a short and boring point. You can’t know when players are going to play good points so just use 45 angle as the main angle so you don’t miss out any spectacular points!!!!

    Thanks for the analysis. Prize money is still number one factor. We need to attract more players or at least parents who think this sport has some future for their kids. This take time and will be a long time. Why China is a dominant force in tt: because the government has long investing in the sport and their athletes even when they are little. In the US it is still a garage sport and not taken as serious. We need more money more tournaments more exposure more tv. If the money is not coming from the government then the big corporations have to step in. Table-tennis is a decicate sport and not so many people know the benefit of it. We are in fact losing out to the newer sport: pickle ball. Clubs are now losing spaces and even players to that sport. We are losing out and becoming an endangered sport. Back to WTT and ITTF: I now watching more tt because of the availibity on you tube thanks to WTT. Before there were only a few international matches showed on tv. So credit that to WTT and WTT contender. Bigger prize Money 💰 🤑 💸 is the solution.

    Thanks for an insightful video! I just discovered your channel and have enjoyed the comments on pros and cons here. You have an enthusiastic audience, I look forward to future videos and discussions. Great to see Malaysian players excelling on the world stage also. I can't wait to come back to Kuala Lumpur and see how things have progressed domestically. Personally it feels like WTT has improved the overall professional atmosphere of the sport and marginally increased prize money for the top players, but not enough to be considered a major change, and definitely not enough to keep up with other racket sports. To do that they need to: 1. become popular in English speaking countries 2. players need to be managed by marketing agencies 3. finals must be contested by more than one country, the world needs to somehow catch up to China Changing the camera angle or experimenting with 5/7 games is not going to increase popularity, there isn't anyone watching now anyway. The T2 league and diamond series was created as a testing ground for new and sometimes controversial formats like the time limit, and 5-point showdown in the decider, etc. T2 is now defunct I believe, everyone who worked there in 2017 is now gone including the CEO, and the social media updates have dried up. Safe to say Ultimate Table Tennis won that battle.

    The unanswerable question is how much worse could viewership have been if WTT had NOT been launched? My consumption of live TT competitions is entirely coincident with the development of WTT starting around the time of Houston 2021 WC. As a Canadian fan of TT, it's hard to imagine a world without the reliable coverage offered by the WTT TH-cam channel..

    • @goldentabletennis3910

      Broadcasting live on TH-cam is definitely a plus point but the skepticism remains whether or not there is a need for such exaggerated change? I mean, couldn't the matches just be broadcast by ITTF? This remains an unanswerable question till this day.

      @SL-jo4om 6 วันที่ผ่านมา

      @@goldentabletennis3910 That is true. However, my sense is that being the sport's official regulatory body burdens ITTF with many different responsibilities and constrains its ability to focus on and to market the competitions everyone wants to see. (It probably also constrains its governing structure.) For instance, WTT doesn't have to handle paralympic competitions, which -- to be very candid -- are probably a turn-off for most audiences and sponsors. This means a bigger budget for WTT to stream its competitions.

    I do not have much concern or notice the change in name from ITTF to WTT. They are the same set of administrators. They have been successful in promoting and encouraging table tennis as a sport at the grassroot level and healthy sport in many many more countries, especially the Middle East, Africa and South America. In the community, table tennis a a cheap sport and can be played even indoors. Moreover, apart from some rough people, playing table tennis is like playing golf and tennis, people are very friendly and do not fight after the win or loss. It is a good sport.

  • @MetalBeast28
    @MetalBeast28 9 วันที่ผ่านมา

    In my opinion WTT has been a step forward for the sport. I don't believe the growth of a sport can be measured in TH-cam views. In recent years we've seen an increase in social media presence of table tennis, from youtube with Pongfinity and Tabletennisdaily to the appearance of Pingpod and increasing posts about park ping pong in the States. Also we've seen increasing technological advances in the sport like AI driven match analysis and VR table tennis. I think the image of WTT being a modern sport has led to this push forward and makes the sport more desirable, even if professional match views are not getting higher. To drive that point home, TH-cam views of specific matches cannot be counted as the growth parameter since the views will be diluted between viewers that saw the live broadcast, the full match and the match highlights, as well as the region locked people that watch them on other sources. Something I absolutely agree with is the lack of crowds. This is due to one thing only: doing important tournaments in random cities. Yes, maybe do a star contender in Durban or Jeddah, that's fine. But doing a Smash or WTTC in one of these cities that are so far from main TT countries is absurd. WTT Frankfurt was amazing to watch last year. This year the tournaments in China and Korea have been really nice as well. The Singapore Smash has been good as well. Please limit the cities these important tournaments are played in. There is a reason Wimbledon is not played in Saudi Arabia but in England.

    - I absolutely LOVE the new side angle, it's a much better viewing expriences, more exciting and fast, without obstruction by the players . - I absolutely love the accessibility of the WTT matches and it made me watch infinitely more matches then before, I get familiar with more new players, it's great . - Comparing the views of a video that has been up a few months VS. a video that has been up a few years is SO inaccurate and misleading I would not use it at all. Aknowledging it's "not the best" comparison somewhere in the end is not enough.

I understand they are hosted in cashed up places for quick easy money but the lack of fans in those areas will not allow the events to build up over time into something similar to 4 tennis slams. I was very excited to see wtt trying to emulate the 4 slams with the proposed 4 smashes. Grand Smashes are a great idea on paper, even if WTT feel the need to copy Tennis with the name. However in practice it doesn't work... this is because the Grand Slams in tennis are run by separate organisations with their own methodology and marketing technique. I work at the Australian Open every year and it's a proper sports extravaganza. They have wealthy sponsors like Ralph Lauren and Rolex, and around 100'000 paying patrons through the gates. Table Tennis will never be as popular as Tennis, but a good starting point would be to let the Smashes have their own unique flavour, and perhaps more significant names, like Wimbledon and Rolland Garros have. Tournaments in the Middle East will always have empty stadiums. They are likely held there for the financial benefit of associating with the wealthy backers from that area. One of the lead advisors/vice president for WTT is from the area. Aside from the Olympic Games almost all funding for WTT/ITTF comes from China and the Middle East.

    I think you really missed the con that the amount of video fuck ups by wtt is infinite. We had whole events where the sound was off by a few seconds which made it barely watchable. In others the sound was missing completely, the framerate was capped at 20 or half of the picture was missing. Ofcause they are uploading a lot but minimal quality control would be sick. I think just one more person maintaining the channel could help with huge upload delays when there are big events with loads of matches.

      Agree with you. Sometimes the sound is not sync and the live streams pixelates from time to time. This is something WTT definitely needs to improve in the future.

    I remember hating the new camera angle so much at first. Now I am used to it but, similar to the other commenter said, I would prefer the older angle. I wonder how badminton and tennis fans would react if their sport decides to make a similar change in camera angle. Both sports are much closer to table tennis in terms of how the game is viewed than soccer... I wouldn't be shocked if most would hate it.

    I’m in the US. WTT is still a work in progress but I like it, and it seems to be better than what we had before. There is pro-level action to watch almost every day. There also seems to be more opportunities for players at that level to compete, gain experience, win, and become noticed. There seems to be more opportunities for fans in more parts of the world to watch in person, and meet players. I haven’t heard much about it attracting people who weren’t already table tennis fans, so that’s an area for an improvement. Another area is increasing the prize money, as mentioned. Like other pro sports organizations, WTT is essentially an entertainment business. Hopefully all the events are working out financially for all parties involved.

  • @malaysiatabletennis
    @malaysiatabletennis 11 วันที่ผ่านมา

    I think WTT is overcomplicating the situation. They really only need to address the poor camera quality issue, which would solve the majority of the problems table tennis has faced. A bit more effort on the marketing side could also boost viewership. However, redesigning the entire arena feels excessive. The funds used for setting up new courts could have been better allocated, for example, to paying players on time, as mentioned in the video. Many players experience delayed payments. I doubt the new courts have significantly increased spectator numbers, and I also doubt that the classic courts couldn't attract spectators just as effectively.

    I love the new accessibility of table tennis tournaments on TH-cam, it has rekindled my love of the sport, the levels are very high now. I also prefer the side view they are using now. A few concerns. 1) the prize money is not enough 2) the tournaments are so close together the players may be burned out and not give their best. 3) the restrictions on TH-cam for some regions suck, I had to get vpn to get around it. 4) I agree the confusing formats do lead to some frustration but the levels of the game is so fun I don’t worry too much about that. Fix the prize money and have more features on the athletes. Great video, thanks. I am from Jamaica 🇯🇲 btw and i used to play in the ittf era. I find the WTT era more exciting, there is always room for improvement but I give credit for what wtt is doing now.

    I found the side angle very jarring to begin with. I have got used to it now, and don't mind it so much. It does have its merits; gives a better perspective on length. Having said that, I would prefer the old angle any day. Have to agree with your broader analysis. Don't think WTT has been able to propel the game forward.

    1. The video would get better with new tech regardless of organizer 2. The angle sucks 3. WTT events are boring with zero crowd. They could be played in the same warehouse in Doha - no one would see the difference 4. Best of 5 and drawn out tournaments. Why? They have space in the schedule for 7 games. 5. Nothing has really improved, except for the fake prize money

    In my opinion, the camera angle is terrible, I quit watching because of the angle. Also, the feeder, contender, smash and whatnot system were really confusing to me at first. I feel like badminton does a better job as the level of the tournaments are clearly indicated as Super 100, Super 300, Super 500, Super 750 and Super 1000. The ranking system is also clearer for badminton. Also, I think wtt social media needs to do a better job in updating the results and next matchup, sometimes i miss out certain big match as I didn't follow closely.

      Hopefully they will do something about the camera angles soon. I also agree with you with the updates, they show one good point from the match without showing the final point so we don't usually know who won. Descriptions sometimes do not mentioned the winner and even if they do, they don't mention who they are facing next.

    your comparison between the total sum of views of ITTF vs WTT is not that useful as it is not the same to generate 9mio views in 3 years vs 12mio views in 5+years ... when you have more years to accumulate numbers than obviously those numbers should be higher

    • @goldentabletennis3910
      @goldentabletennis3910 12 วันที่ผ่านมา

      As admitted in the video, there are limitations in my analysis. Indeed ITTF videos have more time to accumulate views but the question remains, has the rebranding to WTT really broke the barrier to gain more views or would the views be more or less the same even without the WTT rebranding?

    • @pansarbobo7477
      @pansarbobo7477 11 วันที่ผ่านมา

      I think 3 years and 5 years+ is no different as they are both very long time ago. Most video views would've stagnated after about a year, not gaining as much views unless it is some major tournament or epic clashes. Give WTT videos more time it also will not grow that much to reach the level of ITTF videos. But I am not sure if this is WTT's problem or TH-cam mechanism in general. I mean, even MrBeast, the top TH-camr of the world sometimes see decline in views in his later videos.

    • @MCS12Methodic
      @MCS12Methodic 7 วันที่ผ่านมา

      The viewership statistics are interesting, but no table tennis highlights video has truly high numbers. Pongfinity reaches more people with their content, and it's great that ITTF has brought Emil into the team on many occasions for video content. With regards to videos stagnating that's very accurate, in the case of static content like table tennis matches which take place on a specific date and become less relevant quickly we can see 90-95% of views are from the first couple of days after uploading. Match highlight videos are not necessarily the type of footage we should expect to have skyrocketing views, they are too linear and there isn't much emotion with Chinese players when they win, although the matches are exceptional. Younger generations want shorter clips, bite-sized with some new aspect of their favourite player's personality on display. They players themselves need to be marketed better, but that's not the job of a national association. Right now even Pickleball has better player marketing than Table Tennis.

    Agree, I like how WTT made streams so accessible now. Contenders and feeders are great to watch as all matches are on the 45-degree angle. Due to lack of pro players, I seldom watch the feeders unless Malaysian players are playing. The infinity arena matches are slightly more troublesome as you need to turn on a VPN which usually makes the live lags and loads all the time because of slow line. But all and all still great. As a student who is studying away from home, I don't have access to television so I cannot watch those live matches. If TH-cam didn't broadcast it, all I can do is watch the live scores and wait until somebody uploads the highlights. Thank you WTT for this but please, change the angle! 🤣
