Painting Elephants in Watercolor on YUPO
This video builds on my earlier presentation ‘Using YUPO: Hints & Tips” by utilizing much of the information provided in that video in creating an actual painting, step-by-step. The subject of this watercolor painting on YUPO is elephants, in particular, a cow (female) and calf (baby) elephant. The use of a variety of colors and texture techniques is shown and explained in detail. Hopefully, viewers will watch and take away an excitement and better understanding of what can be achieved in painting with watercolor on this fascinating surface called YUPO.

    Thank you so much for a well-done and detailed video. My first mounted batik on Ginwashi paper is now drying. I mounted it on hot press Fabriano paper using wallpaper paste just to see if it would work. When I saw some buckling, I wet the back of the watercolor paper and put some heavy flat items on it and left it to dry. It's nice to hear you mounted yours on a matboard. You've given me hope. I have less fear about checking my painting now!

    • @magaliarosestudio5414
      @magaliarosestudio5414 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@atilorap Thank you for your interest. I treat my watercolor batik paintings in the same manner as a watercolor on paper. I mat them and frame under glass or acrylic. The surface when the painting is completed will still have a small wax content, so it is absolutely possible not to put it under glass. I have not yet experimented with the idea of mounting the completed painting in a gallery wrap style around canvas on a wooden frame. It would be very light and easy to hang.

    Such a wonderful and detailed video! Just did my first ever batik painting and fell in love with the process. I so appreciate your wonderful explanations on the entire process. I do poured watercolors and the theory working in values is very similar to batik tho you use masking fluid to preserve your value areas. I think I prefer the rather antique look of batik so much more. Can't wait to get started!

      Wonderful to hear from you, Linda! I really hope the watercolor batik 'bug' has bitten you as the process has given me so much. I began working with traditional watercolor materials and techniques and also enjoyed pours. About 7 years ago my sister sent me an article from an art magazine and a letter from a woman she worked with explaining the process. After experimenting and refining those methods to my own I now almost exclusively work with wax and watercolor. I am really trying to engage other artists to give it a try and thank you for letting me know that you are beginning your watercolor batik journey!

    How long does it take to dry before going on?

    • @magaliarosestudio5414
      @magaliarosestudio5414 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Excellent question, Cindy. A medium wash without the alcohol dries in a few minutes unlike watercolor paper...thicker applications of paint take longer. I usually don't use a hair dryer since it will usually just cause the paint to move about too much. The alcohol sprayed areas dry very quickly. If you give it a try I hope you let me know how it goes.

    Wow! What a fascinating process! Is it Ok to mount the batik painting to a heavy paper (like 140lb / 300 lb watercolor paper) ??? Does the ironing of the wax give off toxic fumes? Should the wax ironing be done outdoors?

    • @magaliarosestudio5414
      @magaliarosestudio5414 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      The surface of the batik mounting material should be smooth for proper adhesion. 140lb WC paper is too light, 300lb better, but only hot press. Cheaper to use mat board...even colors can work if you use the white back side. Paraffin wax does release toxins...I cut the negative odds by using a paraffin and bees wax batik wax and having a fan on low for ventilation. Removing the wax out of doors is a great option when possible.
